Remember the case of French meteorologist Philippe Verdier, who was supposedly suspended for daring to write a book critical of the Cult of Climastrology? Well, now we learn
Top French Weatherman Fired Over Climate Change Book https://t.co/STUmA1EvsI
— Judith Curry (@curryja) November 2, 2015
Philippe Verdier, a household name in France for his daily weather reports on the France 2 channel, announced in an online video that he had received a letter of dismissal.
“My book ‘Climate Investigation’ was published one month ago. It got me banned from the air waves,†said the weatherman, who was put “on leave†from the TV station on October 12.
“I received this letter this morning and decided to open it in front of you because it concerns everybody- in the name of freedom of expression and freedom of information.â€
Dissent is not allowed in Progressive (nice fascist) World.
Back in the spring, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) brought out the idea to use the RICO statues to prosecute those who have climate wrongthink. Especially fossil fuels companies. Despite Whitehouse himself refusing to give up his own use of fossil fuels. Now he writes more on the subject in the Providence Journal
Sheldon Whitehouse: Fraudulent speech is not protected
The Founding Fathers built our judicial system to withstand the special interest pressures that beset the political branches of government. A case heard in court, before a neutral judge or jury, is subject to judicial tests like proof under oath and cross-examination (dubbed “the greatest legal engine ever invented for the discovery of truth†by the Supreme Court), not just to political power.
The concerted program of climate change denial, funded largely by fossil fuel interests, should now face those tests. We know that the court process can work, even in the face of massive industry pressure, because our government brought and won a civil case against the tobacco industry for a similar campaign of denial of tobacco’s health effects.
The federal judge’s decision in the tobacco case declared that the “[d]efendants knew there was a consensus in the scientific community that smoking caused lung cancer and other diseases. Despite that fact, they publicly insisted that there was a scientific controversy and disputed scientific findings linking smoking and disease knowing their assertions were false.â€
Reread those sentences, replacing the word “smoking†with the words “carbon pollution.†Replace the references to “health†and “disease†with “climate change†or “harm to our atmosphere and oceans.†Investigative reporting shows this is an accurate description of what the fossil fuel industry has been up to. For instance, researchers at Exxon warned top executives of the risks of carbon pollution as far back as the 1970s. Instead of addressing those facts honestly, Exxon chose to sow public doubt of the emerging scientific consensus, to prevent a drop-off in sales of oil.
This is blatantly a way to deny people their 1st Amendment Rights to Free Speech, by deeming anything the Cult of Climastrology and Sheldon Whitehouse deem “fraudulent”. This is the way it works in Fascist nations.
The results are already coming home to roost in Rhode Island. The tide gauge at Naval Station Newport shows around 10 inches of sea level rise since the Hurricane of 1938 battered our coast. The mean winter water temperature in Narragansett Bay is 3-4 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than just 50 years ago.
First, neither would prove mostly/solely anthropogenic causation. Second, according to the actual data, the sea level trend for Newport, R.I. is rising at a whopping rate of 2.74mm per year, equal to a 0.9 inches of sea rise per century, well within the statistical norm for a Holocene warm period. Oh, and some of that is considered to be part of land changes post glacial period. Whitehouse attempts to paint that rise as apocalyptic, yet, it is much less than would be expected during a Holocene warm period.
There are solutions to this looming threat. Virtually every Republican willing to propose a solution to climate change supports a revenue-neutral carbon fee, where all the money raised goes straight back to the American people. This includes conservative economists, former Treasury secretaries, former Environmental Protection Agency administrators, and former members of Congress.
Democrats are willing to meet them there, and I have proposed legislation that will do just that. But industry, empowered by the Supreme Court’s interpretation of the First Amendment in Citizens United to spend unlimited amounts expressing its views in our elections, holds Republicans in Congress back.
How dare anyone use their Constitutional Free Speech to block an out-of-control central government from instituting draconian taxes and private sector controls!!!!
In the meantime, I believe history will reveal and condemn a massive disinformation campaign, funded by the fossil fuel industry, and propagated through a network of front organizations to obscure the hand of the industry. Some say that seeking a day in court on this question is suppression of free speech. But if this campaign is fraudulent, it does not deserve and it does not get protection under the First Amendment.
Protected free speech has boundaries, and one boundary is fraud. The test of whether the denial campaign amounts to fraud is the test established by the Founding Fathers: a case, in a neutral court of law, where the truth can be tested with evidence, under oath and by cross-examination.
And that right there is his plan: drag Skeptical companies, groups, and individuals into court, using the Power of the Federal Government, to prove that they aren’t engaged in fraud. This breaks another prime American Right, that of being innocent till proven guilty. He’s deeming Skeptics as guilty. Period.
Interestingly, Whitehouse has another op-ed complaining about carbon pollution from fossil fuels. Yet, his Twitter feed is chock full of tweets where he has certainly taken fossil fueled travel (boat, car, and plane). Does that mean he himself is engaged in fraud?

Where’s the “affordable” part?
(Daily Caller) Obamacare premium costs will soar 20.3 percent on average in 2016 instead of the 7.5 percent increase claimed by federal officials, according to an analysis by The Daily Caller News Foundation.
The discrepancy is because the government excluded price data for three of the four Obamacare health insurance plans when the officials issued their recent forecast claiming enrollees would face only a 7.5 percent average rate increase in 2016.
When data for all four plans are included, premium costs will actually rise on average 20.3 percent next year. The 2015 Obamacare price hike was 2.0 percent.
This is for the 38 States that refused to set up their own Exchanges, and instead have the federal government version. The price changes were only calculated for the Silver plans, not the Bronze, Gold, and Platinum ones. Now, in all fairness, the Silver plans are the most popular, with a supposed 62% of Obamacare enrollees choosing them. Of course, since Other Taxpayers are not only ponying up to pay a huge chunk of the premium, it looks affordable.
Hey, did you know that those on Silver plans, and Silver plans only, also get “cost sharing” assistance for their deductibles? That was a new one on me. It was done intentionally to get people to go up to the higher plans. Isn’t that discriminatory?
(Forbes) A new analysis of the rates published by the Obama administration shows the “average lowest silver plan in states with a federal exchange increased by 13 percent from 2015 to 2016, compared to 3.2 percent from 2014 to 2015,†according to Avalere Health, a consulting and research firm tracking the health law. There are 38 states using the federal exchange and monthly premiums for silver plans are generally between $350 and $450, according to Avalere’s analysis here.
The idea of implementing measures that allow all citizens to have health insurance and keep it affordable is a good one: the implementation is the problem.

Happy Sunday! A gorgeous Fall day here in America. Yes, it’s the first day of November, but, we still need a good Halloween pinup, provided by Caroline Gariba, with a wee bit of help as usual.
What is happening in Ye Olde Blogosphere? The Fine 15
As always, the full set of pinups can be seen in the Patriotic Pinup category, or over at my Gallery page. While we are on pinups, since it is that time of year, have you gotten your “Pinups for Vets†calendar yet? And don’t forget to check out what I declare to be our War on Women Rule 5 and linky luv posts and things that interest me
Don’t forget to check out all the other great material all the linked blogs have!
Anyone else have a link or hotty-fest going on? Let me know so I can add you to the list. (BTW, since someone asked, the reason I leave links for the previous week up (or you might see a *) is because they are place holders for later in the day or for next weeks. Easier than rewriting all the time. Also, the listing order has to do with how they are added over time, not how good a post is. I just copy and paste from the previous week, then edit. If you see one of the *’s, go ahead and check out the blog anyhow, see if there is an update. I cannot update with my Android during the day.

The increase in government control of people, private entities, and economies, along with ever increasing taxation, is never enough for the Cult Of Climastrology, a notion that consistently polls as last or next to last on lists of people’s concerns
(UK Guardian) Pledges by most of the world’s countries on climate change are likely to lead to less than 3C of global warming over the century, analysis of the data by the United Nations suggests.
The UN praised governments for coming forward with plans to limit their greenhouse gas emissions, to kick in from 2020 when current commitments expire.
The plans from 146 countries that cover nearly 90% of global emissions, known as INDCs or Intended Nationally Determined Contributions in the UN jargon, will form the centrepiece of the make-or-break Paris conference on climate change this December.
But, and there’s always a but
However, while the plans represent a significant advance on current trends, which would result in as much as 5C of warming if left unchecked, they are not enough in themselves to limit global warming to the 2C threshold that countries are preparing to agree on. This is widely regarded scientifically as the limit of safety, beyond which many of the effects of climate change – floods, droughts, heatwaves, sea level rises and more intense storms – are likely to become much more dangerous.
Well, fortunately, there’s been, at most, statistically insignificant warming, over the past 12-26 years, depending on the study. RSS shows no warming for almost 19 years. Let’s not forget that there has only been a minuscule 1.4 degree Fahrenheit increase in global temperatures since 1850.
Let’s also not forget that lots of countries made lots of pledges when they signed on to the Kyoto Protocol, and only a tiny fraction actually achieved the goals.
Christiana Figueres, executive director of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, said: “These national climate action plans represent a clear and determined down-payment on a new era of climate ambition from the global community of nations. Governments from all corners of the earth have signalled through their INDCs that they are determined to play their part according to their national circumstances and capabilities.â€
Down payment. That’s the operative phrase. Because the Cult of Climastrology will always want more (while refusing to make any down payments in their own lives, of course). The smaller “developing nations”, meaning, ones who cannot compete and want to be freeloaders, want a target of 1.5C, with more money redistributed to their nations.
One thing to keep track of: the calls for Doing More because the plans won’t keep the Earth limited to just a 2C rise are growing. We were told “this is what we need to do to stop the rise of temperatures to no more than 2C” have changed to wanting more and more. This moving goal posts, and it is all about investing, as mentioned, more power in Centralized Government, along with more fees and taxes. If you give Lefties an inch, they’ll take a mile, then say that the initial inch wasn’t good enough, so give them a few more. It never stops.

The latest hang-wringing from the Cult Of Climastrology
Doom! Or not.
Good news for wine drinkers: a leading international body says grape vines are hardy and can survive climate change, at least over the medium term.
Earlier harvesting, changes in grape varieties and new wine-making processes have already helped counter the impact of the harsher weather hitting vineyards across the globe, the head of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) says.
So, the answer is “nope, wine will be fine”. It was more than fine during the last warm period, which was warmer than the current one.
It was too early to give an outlook for 2050, he said.
Gee, ya think?
