Having Run Out Of Ideas, Democrats Co-opt Papa John’s Slogan For 2018 Midterms

Having failed to be anything other than La Resistance to Donald Trump, having no ideas or policies (other than wanting to take people’s guns away and allow abortion with zero restrictions), the Dems have a new slogan (via Twitchy)

Yup

(Newsweek) Since Wednesday, November 9, 2016—the day after Donald Trump shocked the world by winning the presidency—Democrats have eyed 2018 as a year of redemption. The midterm elections would be the first real shot to make up for their stunning failure in 2016 and to take advantage of a president who has—at least for now—proved to be historically unpopular.

After careful consideration, likely countless hours of work-shopping, and input from focus groups, the Democrats have reportedly settled on a new slogan and tagline for next year’s midterms. That’s a big deal, since a slogan can be massively important—remember that whole thing about Making America Great Again?

“A member of Congress told me Democrats big 2018 slogan, which is set to be released Monday. It’s: ‘Better Skills, Better Jobs, Better Wages'” tweeted Vox congressional reporter Jeff Stein on Thursday. He later deleted that tweet and corrected it by noting the full slogan was actually “A Better Deal: Better Skills, Better Jobs, Better Wages.”

Stein said that a member of Congress “noted that this is the result of months of polling and internal deliberations among the House Democratic caucus.”

If you’re suddenly hankering for a slice of greasy, cheesy pizza with sauce that—hot take alert—is reminiscent of ketchup, it’s hard to blame you. The Democrats’ tagline is eerily similar to that of Papa John’s: “Better Ingredients. Better Pizza. Papa John’s.” The similarity was not noticed solely by your intrepid Newsweek writer. The internet was quick to point it out.

But the real inspiration for the slogan and tagline likely isn’t a late-night pizza order. Ezra Levin, co-executive director of liberal grassroots organization the Indivisible Project, pointed out on Twitter that the new slogan appeared to be co-opted from an op-ed written by Virginia Senator Tim Kaine, who was Clinton’s running mate in 2016.

Well, that might make it worse, since we were told that the Obama economy was super wonderful majorly awesome. Either way, it exposes that things were not particularly great during that time period. But, the slogan has not been officially rolled out yet, and if it is, it’ll get a lot of ridicule.

Bummer: Fear Of Immigration Raids Hitting Saratoga Springs Hard Before Race Season

This is supposed to be a sob story, but what it really does is expose employers who have been breaking federal law

Fears of immigration raids linger as Saratoga racing season gets underway

It’s opening day at the Saratoga Race Course. Thoroughbred racing is one of the biggest summer attractions and money makers in Saratoga Springs. The industry relies heavily on foreign workers, many of whom are undocumented.

But President Trump has authorized an aggressive crackdown on illegal immigration. After two federal raids in Saratoga Springs, there are concerns that some laborers will be too scared to show up for work this racing season.

Last month, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested 27 Guatemalan and Mexican men near their homes in Saratoga Springs.

ICE says the arrests were targeted enforcement actions, based on leads the agency had gathered. The charges ranged from administrative violations to felony reentry or visa fraud.

These are the bad illegals that supporters of illegal aliens supposedly claim it are OK to round up and deport. Right up till they are rounded up and deported

Activists say some undocumented workers have been scared out of the area since then, leaving some restaurant kitchens understaffed.

“Some restaurant owners have had to cook, be in the kitchen, do dishes, until such time they can find somebody. But they have lost some pretty critical workers,” said Saratoga Springs Mayor Joanne Yepsen.

What it sounds like is that area businesses are not doing their due diligence to make sure their employees are legally authorized to work in the United States, and should get a visit from federal authorities to check their records. And this is what happens when businesses rely on labor which is not authorized to work in the U.S.: they hide when immigration comes sniffing around.

Yepsen said over a thousand foreign workers are behind the scenes at the race track, in the part called the backstretch.

Some business leaders and racing enthusiasts are worried about another immigration raid, this time at the track itself, or about the idea of those crucial workers being scared off.

The illegals are taking jobs that might otherwise have gone to those legally authorized to work in the U.S., and they most likely get paid less than the law requires, all so that these illegal immigration supporters can see some horses race.

Nor is this the only article. The Times Union, the Saratogian, the Saratoga Today, and many other area papers are Very Concerned. The Times Union editorial board wrote a Very Concerned editorial.

And the city has essentially declared itself a sanctuary city, with the mayor giving a cute response that shows where the priorities of herself and other illegal alien supporters lies

Saratoga Springs has experienced dozens of arrests of illegal immigrants this year, and several trainers indicated that their staff are afraid to travel upstate for the race meet. According to nyupstate.com, the city’s mayor Joanne Yepsen declared on Monday that Saratoga police would not be initiating or participating in federal deportation of illegal immigrants.

“There are certain jobs like mucking stalls and washing dishes,” said Yepsen, noting that the deportation fears have been affecting both the racetrack and the local restaurant industry. “You know for some reason, they’re just not able to fill those jobs so it was a win win in my opinion to have those immigrants.”

So, they’re just cheap labor for mucking stalls and washing dishes for these Liberals. When illegal alien supporters start yammering about being compassionate and stuff, just remember Mayor Yepsen’s comment.

Climate Scientists Attempt To Hide Research From The Public

Perhaps someone from the Warmist side can explain why so many climate scientists, who so often get the majority, if not all, of their funding via the government, which takes the money involuntarily from the citizens, do not want to share their data. On the one hand, they keep telling us that science is open, that there should be a free exchange of ideas. On the other, they always want to hide their work

(Daily Caller) The American Association of University Professors (AAUP) doesn’t want its unpublished climate change research seen by the public. The association is trying to block requests from a conservative think tank that wants to see what kind of research is being withheld from publication.

The College Fix reports that the AAUP has filed a brief with the Arizona Court of Appeals to stop the research efforts of the Energy & Environment Legal Institute from obtaining the data. The association suggested in a Friday news release that even though if a professor’s research his been conducted at a pubic university, it should not be available for the public to examine.

The association goes so far as describing the request for the research information as “harassment” because it “targeted” the professors engaged in that research. And they say it’s all about maintaining “a free and vital university system, which depends on the protection of academic freedom to engage in the free and open scientific debate necessary to create high quality academic research.”

Divulging the information “would have a severe chilling effect on intellectual debate among researchers and scientists,” the association says.

Warmists always have some excuse. What are they afraid of divulging? As one of the commenters notes, in regards to the last paragraph in the excerpt

Get your head around that. What they’re saying is that “intellectual debate” would be compromised by the introduction of all relevant information into the debate.

Correct.

Democrats Slip Amendment Allowing Illegal Aliens To Obtain Federal Jobs Into Spending Bill

Because of course the did (via The Lid and Eagle Rising)

(Breitbart) GOP legislators, led by Georgia Rep. Tom Graves, are working to kill off a Democratic measure which has been added to the House’s 2018 spending plan and will allow younger illegal immigrants to find jobs in government.

The Democrat-drafted and -backed rule was inserted into the House’s version of the 2018 spending plan via a during a nighttime July 13 debate at the GOP-dominated House Committee on Appropriations. The jobs-for-illegals amendment was adopted because some GOP legislators joined Democrats in supporting the measure, but their identity and number remain secret because it was a voice vote, not a recorded vote.

The rule was slipped in by California Democrat Rep. Pete Aguilar, who wants to give Dreamers the ability to work for the federal government, which would further solidify their anchors to America. And put more more potential Democrat voters in government offices. And, even if they can’t vote, they can use those government positions to support Democrats.

At least 5 Republicans would have had to vote in favor of this provision for it to pass out of committee.

As The Lid notes

The plan is to have the House Committee on Rules declare that the jobs-for-illegals amendment is possibly improper, or out-of-order. That decision would allow a legislator to request during floor debate in the House of Representatives that the amendment be clipped from the bill. If a majority of the House agrees that the amendment is improper, it will be stripped from the bill.

If the bill does get stripped from the bill, look for Nancy Pelosi to call House Republicans bigots, and Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer will start crying. Let’s just hope that a vote about the amendment is not done via a voice vote so Americans can tell which members of congress support the rule of law and believe federal jobs should only go to people who are here legally.

Rep. Tom Graves (R-Ga) is spearheading this movement. He and other Republicans are confident it can be done.

CNN Poll: Fewer Want GOP To Repeal And Replace Obamacare

CNN thinks they’re on to something, and they might well be

As repeal and replace falters, more say GOP should abandon repeal plan

A new CNN poll conducted by SSRS finds a growing share of Americans want to see the GOP abandon its effort to repeal and replace the 2010 health care law known as Obamacare, as majorities across party lines want congressional Republicans to aim for a bill with bipartisan support.

Overall, 35% in the poll say they’d like President Donald Trump and the Republicans in Congress to give up their plans for repealing and replacing Obamacare, up from 23% who said the same in a March survey.

A majority still favor some form of repeal (34% would prefer repeal with replacement at the same time, and 18% favor repeal regardless of whether the law is replaced at the same time). The share in favor of repeal without replacement has held roughly steady since March; it remains the least popular option.

But public preferences are shifting away from repealing the law and enacting replacements concurrently (down from 59% in March), and more now say they’re unsure how they want Republican leaders to proceed (13% say so in the new poll).

Increases in support for abandoning repeal have come largely among groups that aren’t central to the GOP’s base: Younger adults, non-whites and those with lower incomes have become notably more supportive of leaving the ACA as is.

If you’re Apple, to you really worry about non-Apple users yammering on in polls about your product? For the most part, no. But, might you not want to entice them to purchase and obtain your product? That’s the same thing here: many in those groups might not be central to the GOP, but, they need to get those people to believe in repeal and replace. And so far, the GOP has done a terrible job with their idiotic plans, which never actually repealed and replaced.

The poll also finds that with several failed efforts at repealing and replacing the bill in the rear view mirror, about half think it’s likely the President and Republicans in Congress will ultimately be able to reach a deal to repeal and replace Obamacare. That’s down from 58% who felt it was likely in an April CNN/ORC survey, but remains above the share who say it’s unlikely the ACA will be repealed and replaced (41%).

That’s because the fools did foolish things. Seven years of complaining about Obamacare and we ended up with two terrible non-repeal/replace bills.

Republicans themselves remain optimistic that their party’s leaders in the White House and Congress will be able to come together to achieve this long-standing goal, 78% say it’s very or somewhat likely to happen, but less than half of independents or Democrats agree.

That’s a pretty high number. Count me in the 22% who think it won’t happen. They can’t even get a clean repeal.

Overall, this should have been expected. The time to kill Obamacare was the 2012 election. With a President Romney, he could have slowed or even stopped the implementation of Obamacare, even without control of the Senate. All the rules and regulations could have been spiked. Once it was implemented, though, getting rid of it would be damned difficult. How many Big Big Big Government programs have been killed off? A handful at best? Instead, most become institutionalized, and, even when they are failing, even with miserable performance, they still stick around.

NPR: Having That Extra Child Could Cause “Climate Trauma”

NPR, which receives approximately 14% of it’s funding directly from money the government takes from taxpayers (probably more, since 12% comes from universities, which receive lots of taxpayer funding), has finally chimed in on the “study” that says people should have one less child. (via Twitchy)

From the link

We’ve all heard of ways to reduce our carbon footprint: biking to work, eating less meat, recycling.

But there’s another way to help the climate. A recent study from Lund University in Sweden shows that the biggest way to reduce climate change is to have fewer children.

“I knew this was a sensitive topic to bring up,” says study co-author Kimberly Nicholas on NPR’s Morning Edition. “Certainly it’s not my place as a scientist to dictate choices for other people. But I do think it is my place to do the analysis and report it fairly.”

The study concludes that four high-impact ways to reduce CO2 gas emissions include having fewer children, living without a car, avoiding airplane travel and eating a vegetarian diet.

Again, what, exactly, constitutes “fewer children”? If you were going to only have two, does that mean just one? If you wanted a big family, 5 or six, does that mean 4 or 5? And will the people at NPR follow through in their own lives on these four recommendations?

Nicholas says they also found that worldwide, many government resources on climate change did not focus on the top lifestyle changes in order to reduce carbon emissions.

“Something really important we found is that most government recommendations weren’t really talking about what makes the biggest difference, and they weren’t qualifying how big of a difference it made,” Nicholas tells NPR’s Steve Inskeep.

Is it really the government’s place to do that? Should the Government really be telling people to do these things? Especially since the Government uses vast amounts of fossil fuels themselves? In Warmist world, yes. In fact, in Warmist world the Government should be forcing Other People to give up their cars, eat a vegetarian diet, almost never fly, and have few children. Climate change is a political movement, not a scientific one.

Here’s where it gets really fun

“I think the decision to become a parent is a really personal decision,” she says. “I think the way people relate to it in terms of climate change depends on their view about climate change. If they don’t believe or don’t know the science, I feel like it makes them angry. I think if they do know the science and are overwhelmed by it, they feel guilt or despair.”

There’s already a word for this: climate trauma.

For some activists, climate change isn’t only an intellectual problem. It’s a “heart problem,” says Josephine Ferorelli, co-founder of Conceivable Future. She spoke with NPR’s Jennifer Ludden last year on having kids in the age of climate change. That story cited a study from 2010 that came to similar conclusions about the impact of slowing population growth on global carbon emissions.

These people really are nuts.

Illegals Are At Risk Of Driving While Illegal Or Somethibg

This is something that has the NY Times Very Concerned

Heading to church one evening in late March, a farmworker and her sister were stopped for speeding in the village of Geneseo, N.Y. They were driving with their five children in the back of the minivan. Two were not in car seats, as required.

The police officer, trying to cite the driver for the infractions, discovered she had no driver’s license, so he called Border Patrol to review her Guatemalan passport. Both sisters were undocumented immigrants. They were detained and are facing deportation.

As it should be.

Under a Trump administration that has taken an aggressive stance on illegal immigration, the moving car has become an easy target. A broken headlight, a seatbelt not worn, a child not in a car seat may be minor traffic violations, but for unauthorized immigrants, they can have life-altering consequences.

Just minor things, like putting a child in danger, often not having insurance, oh, and being unlawfully in the United Stated.

“If there was a valid licensed driver driving the vehicle,” the Geneseo police chief, Eric Osganian, said in a statement after the two sisters were pulled over, “there would have been no need to call Border Patrol to confirm the ID of the driver.”

As many as 12 states, along with the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, offer driver’s licenses for unauthorized immigrants, up from three in 2010. New York, which has the third-largest immigrant population in the country, is not one of them.

And that’s the point of the article, pushing licenses for illegals. There is a bit of back and forth, but, reading between the lines, it is a bit of activism meant to get the supporters of illegals to go out there and push this.

Better idea: get them out of the country. If the want to be here, they can do it the legal way.

California Counties Sue Oil Companies Over “Rising Seas” From Hotcoldwetdry

The oil companies involved should stop selling as many of their products as they can in the three counties, especially the gas stations. That’d work out really well for the counties and their employment and tax stats, wouldn’t you say?

(Daily Caller) Three California counties sued 37 of the world’s largest oil and coal companies Monday for damages related to global warming-induced sea level rise.

Marin County, San Mateo County and Imperial Beach filed separate, but virtually identical, lawsuits claiming that oil companies bear responsibility for the sea level rise harming in coastal counties. County lawyers claim flooding is more frequent and beaches are eroding more rapidly.

The counties want reimbursement for current and future financial losses from sea level rise, in addition to punitive damages. The plaintiffs don’t set a specific number for damages, but estimate they’ll need at least $54 billion dollars over the coming decades.

“This is a long-anticipated move in climate litigation,” Michael Burger, executive director of environmental law at Columbia University, told The San Francisco Chronicle. “You’ll find pieces of it in other cases, but bringing it together like this is different than what’s been done before. You can expect there will be a great deal of interest in how this litigation proceeds.”

San Francisco is a mere 1.94mm per year in rise, equating to .64 feet of rise over 100 years. This pretty much covers for both the Marin and San Mateo areas. For Imperial Beach, near San Diego, SD is running at 2.15mm per year, equating to .70 feet over 100 years. Exactly average for the Holocene. Those numbers should be at least double to triple during a Holocene warm period.

In order to prove their case, the counties will have to find a specific connection between harm from global warming and the actions of each energy company. Additionally, they’ll have to show that the issue cannot be handled by government regulations.

What they’re probably doing is attempting a shakedown of the oil companies. And the oil companies have better lawyers who are employed by the companies to deal with stupid lawsuits.
