Arizona’s new voting laws that require proof of citizenship are not discriminatory, a US judge rules
A federal judge is upholding provisions of new Arizona laws that would require counties to verify the status of registered voters who haven’t provided proof of U.S. citizenship and cross-check voter registration information with various government databases.
In a ruling Thursday, U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton concluded Arizona legislators did not discriminate when they adopted the laws and the state does have an interest in preventing voter fraud and limiting voting to those individuals eligible to vote.
“Considering the evidence as a whole, the court concludes that Arizona’s interests in preventing non-citizens from voting and promoting public confidence in Arizona’s elections outweighs the limited burden voters might encounter when required to provide (documentary proof of citizenship),” she wrote.
It should be required that you are a U.S. citizen with the right to vote, and that you are voting in the correct state and district. Why is this a problem for Democrats?
Arizona is required to accept the federal registration form, but anyone who does not provide proof of citizenship is only allowed to vote for president, the U.S. House or Senate. The federal form requires people to swear they are U.S. citizens, but there is no proof requirement.
Well, that’s what Democrats are really looking for, to get non-citizens to vote and install Democrats in Congress and the White House.
While supporters said the measures would affect only voters who have not shown proof of citizenship, voting advocates claimed hundreds of thousands of people who haven’t recently updated their voter registration or driver’s license could be affected.
Well, update your registration. It’s not that difficult. We do things all the time where we have to update. You moved? How many things must you update? Auto loan, insurance, credit cards, bank, and more. Most states require under penalty of law that you update your driver’s license, typically within 90 days. Seriously, The U.s. seems to be the only country in the world that finds it “controversial” to be a citizen before voting.
The fact that someone would even question this law as ‘discriminatory’ begs the questions Why? What’s your motive? As a citizen, you have the right to vote. Provided you are a citizen, you follow the format, and you show ID. What’s discriminatory there?? NOTHING.

Yet, for all that kerfuffle, no one from the church group had an issue voting. And, yes, we should stop people from voting who are not eligible. Virtually everyone has ID, and the state will provide ID for free for the tiny minority who do not.

40% of Americans over 80 yo do not have a drivers license. Getting the documents that attach would be required might be difficult and result in their neither voting nor being able to vote.

Back in the hood old days when America was great it was never felt necessary to have a federal law declaring it illegal and fixing penalties. That law was not passed until 1996.
The Brennan study of 42 jurisdictions looked at 33.5 million votes and found 30 cases of non citizens voting. My guess ? Would be their bites were split between the 2 parties. Should we risk taking away the vote from the 30% of people over 85xo (the greatest generation) to stop an infinitesimal number of non citizens from voting ?

A drivers license is not required to vote. You are required to have proof of identity. You can easily obtain such proof from your government with picture, meets all requirements. But you are required to have an id for most activities in the US. So what is the big deal?
For that matter, if you can’t come up with the required material, you don’t need to be voting.

yes I can easily get proof of citizenship BUT not everyone can. I think that even you would agree that disabled, elderly and there might have a hard time doing things that you or I would find quite easy. Such as those 300000 (my est) of people born before 1929. Should needed prof of citizenship always be free? If not shouldnt that be considered a modern poll tax like what was used to disenfranchise blacks during Jim Crow times?

My Dad couldn’t get a birth certificate, which he needed to apply for a passport. Apparently, the county courthouse back in rural Kentucky over 90 years back burned down with all the records. Strangely enough, the Army depot that held his WWII records also burned down. Anyway, even a birth certificate isn’t proof of citizenship any more. You’d need a parent’s BC or naturalization papers as well.
JimS, your dad’s WW2 discharge docs or a certified copy of his DD214, usually filed in the county courthouse, should have been adequate. He probably ran into a garden variety gummint worker that didn’t want to expend any effort. The St Louis Records fire destroyed a lot of military records, my Grandpa, Dad, and Uncle’s records were in the section that burned.Luckily,the old man kept his copies of his docs in a file with souvenirs and pix of his tour with the 3rd AD. Passports are supposed to be difficult to get and a driver’s license should be. Government issued i.d. cards aren’t very hard to get.

I think the greatest generation refers to those who lived through the Great Depression and World War 2 but died before 2000.
