Democrats, Squishy Republicans Still Trying To Make Aid For Ukraine Happen

Why are they so intent on giving our money to a war that is going nowhere, that means little to US national security, and will see the US receive nothing in return?

Ukraine aid backers still see path for new aid

The stopgap spending bill that will be sent to President Joe Biden’s desk doesn’t contain new money for Ukraine or even transfer authority for aid. Yet backers of Kyiv’s defense against Moscow say it may come soon.

Some backers of Ukraine believe a bill allowing at least that transfer authority — which unlocks other buckets of U.S. cash for the war against Russia — could pass Congress as soon as [this] week, according to two people with knowledge of conversations between the House and Senate.

The lack of transfer authority is a glaring omission from the spending bill abruptly passed by the House earlier Saturday. Speaker Kevin McCarthy was open to putting it in the House’s bill, according to three people familiar with the negotiations, but negotiators were unable to finalize language to put into the legislation before it passed the lower chamber.

Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio), a co-chair of the House’s Ukraine caucus, said she was “very uncomfortable” voting for a bill that didn’t contain Ukraine aid. (She ultimately backed the bill.)

She’s uncomfortable voting for a bill that funds the American people? I’m sure quite a few felt that way.

(Reuters) U.S. President Joe Biden on Sunday pressed congressional Republicans to back a bill to provide more aid to Ukraine, saying he was “sick and tired” of the political brinkmanship that nearly led to a government shutdown. (snip)

Biden said Republicans had pledged to provide that aid through a separate vote.

“We cannot under any circumstances allow America’s support for Ukraine to be interrupted. I fully expect the speaker to keep his commitment to secure the passage and support needed to help Ukraine as they defend themselves against aggression and brutality,” he told reporters at the White House.

We fully expected a bill about inflation reduction to be about inflation reduction, not ‘climate change’ and non-related garbage. Expect Biden to yammer about funding Ukraine, rather than on the problems facing America, for at least the rest of the week.

‘We can’t do it alone’: Ukrainians react to lack of additional funding in US spending bill

The United States may have avoided a government shutdown on Saturday – but the lack of additional funding for Ukraine in the spending bill has left some residents in the war-torn nation nervous. (snip)

“These are internal American games. And Ukraine is a hostage to this discussion – this internal war,” Ukrainian serviceman Volodymyr Kostiak told CNN on Sunday, a national holiday marking Defenders Day to honor the country’s veterans and war dead.

“America’s strategic interests are so big that Ukraine is part of them,” he added. “And I think that the internal political struggle cannot affect the assistance to Ukraine that much. There will be some errors, but they will be insignificant.”

Why are you not on the front lines fighting? The photo at the article has him standing around far from the battlefield, looking all clean and pressed. All the photos of different people show them looking al nice and well fed, just wanting lots of sweet, sweet American cash.

Pro-Putinist MAGAts such as Mr Teach have no problem with Russian aggression.

Invade and annex Ukraine? No problem. After all, Ukraine and President Zelenskyy refused to help President Trump in 2020!!

Putin is strongman dictator who executes opponents and critics. Mr Trump would love that kind of power.

Why are they so intent on giving our money to a war that is going nowhere.

Because the money doesn’t go nowhere. Much of it comes back here into the accounts of people with connections.

The real question is why ordinary American democrats are suddenly neocons and totally supporting war in far away lands that are killing hundreds of thousands of people so that one group of totally corrupt oligarch can rule them instead of a different group of totally corrupt oligarchs. The only answer I can find is that Democrat party activists on the internet are absolutely incapable of having any original thoughts that might break from the announced party line on any topic.

One doesn’t need to go all the way to Russia to find government officials using their office to persecute political opponents.

Commenter: Much of it (Ukraine aid) comes back here into the accounts of people with connections.

Another weak link in the MAGAt chain of conspiracy. Any evidence to support this claim? Didn’t think so.

Whew!! Why do Americans support the democracy Ukraine against the unprovoked invasion by Russia? Why do ordinary MAGAts totally support Putin invading a sovereign nation???

Ukraine was/is no threat to Russia. Ukraine did not threaten or invade Russia.

The commenter seems to not understand “neoconservatism”, which supports the absolute military protection of Israel, anti-communism, the Heritage Foundation, CEI, anti-detente with USSR/Russia…

“The United States will transfer military equipment worth up to $400 million to Ukraine to aid its defense against the Russian invasion, Defense Department officials said today.
This security assistance package features ammunition and support equipment to meet Ukraine’s critical security and defense needs.”

Where do you think the weapons are manufactured?

Commenter: Where do you think the weapons are manufactured?

So NOW you object to American workers receiving pay for manufacturing ammo and materiel?? Like a lake turning over in the fall, Republicans have recently flip-flopped on the US military-industrial complex! Do you really believe/feel this is what the previous commenter was whining about or do you understand they were implying that US funds to Ukraine are being funneled back to Dem supporters? Don’t play dumb.

We’re not using the military equipment ourselves, are we? Consider it an investment in global freedom. And an economic boost to the nation.

Does that apply to our military gifts to Israel and other nations? We’ve sent some $0.5 TRILLION abroad in military support over the past 40 years.

Russia invaded Ukraine. This is not like the Vietnam, Iraq or Afghanistan fiascos. More like Korea except without the US fighting directly.

But, of course, in Korea the US quickly began fighting directly! What makes you believe that such wouldn’t happen eventually in Ukraine?

Our British brethren are already saying that they are planning on sending British soldiers to Ukraine, not to fight, of course, but to train the Ukrainians. President Kennedy sent American troops to South Vietnam, 16,000 of them by the time he was assassinated, not to fight, of course, but to train the ARVN. How did that work out?

Brits in Ukraine? They will be in harm’s way, perhaps not deliberately, but the odds will greatly increase that some of them will be killed, because such are the fortunes of war. What happens when British soldiers, NATO soldiers! get blasted in Ukraine?

That would definitely be people in the arms business.

Quit acting stupid. We’re starting to believe you.

  3. Dana says:

According to two separate polls, as reported by CNN — not exactly an evil reich-wing news source — in late July, early August and then again in mid-September, 55% of Americans oppose further aid to Ukraine.

I suppose that makes 55% of Americans “Pro-Putinist MAGAts such as Mr Teach (who) have no problem with Russian aggression,” or at least that’s how the distinguished Mr Dowd put it.

  4. Elwood P. Dowd says:

The British PM said no British troops will fight in Ukraine.

If you look at the breakdown in the SSRS polls, all groups, Repubs, Dems, Ind, libs, cons, mods all equally supported training and intelligence gathering with only Repubs and cons objecting to sending weapons.

Once we pull support and the Russians are in Kyiv and have executed the Zelenskyy family ask the questions again.

    • L.G.Brandon!, L.G.Brandon! says:

You have the Russians confused with Soviets. It’s the communist who pulled that kind of crap not the Russians it’s the Russians who are concerned about having NATO in their border just like the United states was worried about having the Warsaw Pact on its. You buy every bit of disinformation and propaganda the left feeds that you don’t you?

    • Dana says:

Our medicine man from Missouri wrote:

The British PM said no British troops will fight in Ukraine.

And President Kennedy, and later President Johnson, said that our ‘military advisors’ would not fight in Vietnam! I’m pretty sure that you’re old enough to remember that!

So, what happens if the Brits come under attack? Will they not fight, turning tail and running, and possibly getting shot in the back as they retreat, or will they respond the way they are trained to respond, and return fire? If it’s the latter, then they will be fighting in Ukraine!

The German field marshal, known as Moltke the Elder, believed in developing a series of options for battle instead of a single plan, saying “No plan of operations extends with certainty beyond the first encounter with the enemy’s main strength.” Today, “no plan survives contact with the enemy” is the popular reconfiguration of this concept. . . . .

Noted military strategist Mike Tyson also advanced this view of planning with what might be his most famous quote: “Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.

      • Elwood P. Dowd says:

Commenter: And President Kennedy, and later President Johnson, said that our ‘military advisors’ would not fight in Vietnam!

        Proving what today?

          Proving what today?

Proving that the Prime Minister’s statement is no guarantee of future policies.

If, despite all of our assistance, Ukraine slowly starts losing the war, hardly an impossible thing, given that Russia has thrice Ukraine’s population and manpower, are the United States, United Kingdom, and the rest of NATO going to throw up their hands and say, “Oh, well, we tried,” or will we see pressure from the neocons and others saying that we can’t let Ukraine lose, and advocate sending NATO troops in as well?
