Most US Senators spend little time in the state they represent. Butler moved to MD in 2021 for work.
And she’s a Black lesbian!! Governor Newsom had stated earlier that he would NOT appoint any of the announced candidates for Feinstein’s seat, giving them an unfair advantage in the 2024 Senatorial election.
And what happens when Bob Menendez (D-NJ) does the right thing? Who will Governor Murphy (D-NJ) appoint? Maybe Rep Mikie Sherrill (D-NJ).

The Constitution says that each state will have two Senators.

Like it really matters? Most Senators live in DC, Virginia or Maryland once they get elected. And as a democrat, she is just there to rubber stamp every thing the party tells her to rubber stamp, just like Feinstein did for decades. We already have learned that Democrats are fine voting for people who are mentally incapacitated, stupid, and morally compromised. As long as they reliably vote party line once in office, they have the only qualification that really matters.
The silly notion that you have to be a member of some particular group in order to represent their interests is a dangerous one. By that “reasoning”, anything other than a white male senior citizen disenfranchises me…. What do I burn down to protest this outrage? 🙂

Funny-so in other words all virtue signaling squares are filled.
Personally, I think we need to go back to the days when senators were appointed by state legislatures. The purpose of having a bicameral federal legislature was to insure that the interests of the state governments were represented in DC.
In reality, the states do not have “interests”. State governments are in theory responsive to the state citizens. Many of those have very widely divergent personal interests. The Bluest of blue places (DC) has some republicans. The Reddest of red states has some whacko communists.
But since the day when the Senate became popularly elected, they became just a redundant house of lords. That is two strikes against it. The US government should just be restructured to eliminate the senate and their legitimate duties shifted to the House. While we are at it, the position of Speaker of the house should be a nationally elected office and not the representative of a single district. The position of VP should be abolished. And the term of President, if vacant by death or incapacitation, should be filled by special election. None of those appointed officials should be in the chain of succession. No one voted for them.
