Surprise: EV Batteries Can Be Pretty Darned Dangerous

This is nothing new, but, it is going to get worse with so many more hybrids and EVs on the road daily. Talk to fire fighters and you’ll learn they have special protocols for dealing with these vehicles, because of the dangers of fire when in an accident. They’ve told me the dispatchers are tasked with asking what kind of vehicle is involved with the accident, as they’ll respond differently. And, of course, batteries can just combust

The Science of Why Electric Vehicle Batteries Are So Dangerous

Electric vehicleIn a recent op-ed, the Washington Post outlines how Tesla’s battery issues and fires may not just be due to poor design and manufacturing but a side effect of electric vehicles relying on lithium-ion batteries.

The Washington Post reports in an op-ed titled “Tesla’s Big Batteries Aren’t the Fire Problem. Lithium Is,” that Americans should be questionubg whether lithium-ion powerpacks should be used for applications such as electric vehicles. The piece argues that the science of lithium-ion batteries make them inherently dangerous.

The Washington Post writes:

The large-scale use comes with significant risks, although most modern power systems choose this formulation because it boasts higher energy density, as well as greater charging and discharging efficiency. However, lithium-ion batteries have a volatile, flammable electrolyte. So, while there are safeguards to avoid fires, all the combustible ingredients are still there. Flames can accelerate through chain reactions, known as thermal runaway.

Big batteries are made up of several cells packed together. Current is constantly flowing inside, which generates heat. If there are no barriers between the components, a failure in one part quickly cascades through. While elaborate (and critical) equipment for cooling the system is put in place, it draws on the energy of the actual powerpack and reduces its output. In addition, when charged, a coat of lithium metal can form on the surface and dendrites, or needle-like structures can grow, and lead to short-circuits.

Both the Washington Post piece and the Breitbart piece spend a bit talking about how dangerous the batteries are, and, quite frankly, it might be a bit overblown. Lithiums have been around for quite some time now, and, while we hear about real issues with cellphone and vape batteries here and there, with them banned from being in checked airplane baggage, it’s still rare. But, with more EVs, and mass production, could it be worse?

The Washington Post piece, which looks like it originally came from Bloomberg, does actually make recommendations on replacement technology, but, here’s the thing: none of them are truly viable at this time. And this will be used by the climate cultists to recommend that citizens be stopped from having EVs and just take mass transit, bike, or walk. That’s what they do.

Surprise..!! Toyota has announced solid state EV to be sold in 2 years at dealership 2025
    No flammable liquid.
Honda is expecting solid state batteries to be in showrooms mid decade 2027

Good thing that gasoline is not inflammable!!

    • JimS says:

It’s not known for spontaneously bursting into flames except in poorly written Hollywood movies. LiPo batteries can do that.

  4. Elwood P. Dowd says:

Kia’s EV6 has 310 mile range, 18 min charging, all for about $40,000 after state and federal subsidies.

  5. H says:

Mr White it is the liquid electrolyte that is the crux of the problem
It is used in 99%of lithium ion batteries
However solid state batteries are now being introduced and will appear on Toyotas in 2 years 2025

  6. Mr. Proton says:

If we had a “Press” who weren’t propagandists, there would be some very basic stories to write here.

How likely is an EV to spontaneously combust?
How likely is an ICE Vehicle, to spontaneously combust?

Same data for “after a collision.”

This data is available, although it might take some legwork to summarize and modern “journalists” can’t be bothered.

But it would answer the whole thing. Are EV’s more dangerous than ICE vehicles?

Aside from all of the other reasons not to buy an EV, are they more dangerous? Easy to answer… which is why the answer is probably “yes, they are.”

Otherwise, it would be PAGE ONE News!!!

    • Elwood P. Dowd says:

      Mr Proton,

      Are you positive?

Is there evidence that battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) are less safe than (internal combustion engine) ICE cars? Not so far.

Graham Conway, principal engineer at the Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio, Texas, said there’s not enough information to decide if EVs are more prone to spontaneous fire than ICE ones.

“What is clear is that the fire is more difficult to deal with, the energy release during the exotherm of the electrolyte takes a lot of cooling to extinguish.”

Conway said the data didn’t allow for solid conclusions.

“The NTSB data said that after 41 fatal collisions involving BEVs, 1 caught on fire (2.44%). The NTSB data said that after 20,315 fatal collisions involving gasoline vehicles, 644 caught on fire (3.17%). The NTSB data said that after 543 fatal collisions involving gasoline hybrid vehicles, 12 caught on fire (2.21%),” Conway said.

But 41 crashes vs 20,315 crashes vs 543 crashes make it statistically irresponsible to compare these numbers. For example, if there was a 42nd crash with an EV and it caught on fire then it would be 4.76% of EVs or double the rate of hybrids. Until the sample size is the same and significant we just can’t say which will be worse or not,” Conway said.

      Seems fair enough.

Catching fire and SPONTANEOUSLY COMBUSTING are two entirely different things.

There is no reason to believe that EVs are any less safe in collisions than ICE vehicles.

The point is that Chevrolet told you to charge your BOLT outside so you didn’t burn down your house. That sounds rather alarming. Not ready for prime timish.
Nov 10, 2020 · lithium-ion batteries, whether they’re in cars, smartphones or automobiles, can catch fire if they’ve been improperly manufactured,

This has nothing to do with auto crashes. Way to deflect….LOLOLOL.

        • Elwood P. Dowd says:

Do ICE cars ever catch on fire in a parking lot, in a driveway, while driving? Yes, of course they do. In 1981, the SAE estimated 1 in 1000 registered vehicles caught fire, not caused by a crash. No doubt, manufacturers have made cars safer since. 0.1% of ICE cars is a lot of cars burning!

When I worked at the world’s largest pharma company, a friend’s Grand Cherokee burst into flames in the parking lot.

          But way to deflect, LOLOLOL.

          • CarolAnn says:

Why are you guys triggered by a basic fact that there is a problem with fires in EV cars? It’s a fact and it needs addressing not arguing. Complaining that ICE cars caught fire does not address the current problem. You leftists are so pathetic. You get all bent when someone points out a fact about one of your sacred cows. Like the stolen election. You go goofy.

You’ve won yet you are the poorest winners on earth. EV’s are being made at a brisk rate, we citizens are being forced to buy them against our will, our grid won’t handle it and oil is now poison. You won. Relax and watch Western Civilization deteriorate like you want. Just like the stolen election. You won. You pulled off the biggest coup in history and blocked every audit and investigation into it, jailed your opposition, murdered others and put a pall of lawfare over our fallen republic. You won. Now sit back and watch your commie pals ruin our freedom, prosperity and nation.

You guys are even worse winners than you are loosers.

Teslas have caught on fire as well. In fact, the real reason is not the batteries per se but the fact that the US industry buys these batteries from FUCKING CHINA.

China doesn’t give a shit if you die or not. That is why Musk and Tesla have started building their own batteries so they can be in charge of their own future.

Chevy, Ford, Chrysler, and others would be wise to do the same.

We understand why you Deflect DOWD. It is because you are a CHINA drone apologist.

  7. Doom and Gloom says:

Get the auto companies to commit to EV’s. Force them to stop making CO2 expending vehicles.

Once you have accomplised that. Begin attacking BATTERIES, parking lots, highways, roads and bridges.

It’s a great playbook. Once they have brought into question Batteries they will begin attacking the razing of the planet to make batteries. Once they have permanently made the USA energy POOR they will then hand the keys to CHINA.
