Trump To Pick New Supreme Court Justice: Who Will It Be?

Today is the day Mr. Trump, the duly and Constitutionally elected President of the U.S.A, will pick another Supreme Court justice

(Washington Post) President Trump said he was “close” to choosing a Supreme Court nominee Sunday after a weekend at his New Jersey golf club evaluating four leading candidates and mulling the likely response of key senators and his core supporters to each prospect, according to White House officials and Trump advisers involved in the discussions.

Over rounds of golf with friends, meals with family, and a flurry of phone calls and meetings with aides, Trump remained coy about his final decision, which is expected to be announced Monday evening from among the four federal judges atop his shortlist: Brett M. Kavanaugh, Thomas Hardiman, Raymond Kethledge and Amy Coney Barrett.

“I’m very close to making a decision,” Trump told reporters Sunday afternoon. “Have not made it official yet. Have not made it final.” (snip)

Hardiman, a runner-up when Trump chose Neil M. Gorsuch as his high court nominee last year, received a wave of new attention in the weekend discussions, according to two people briefed on the matter but not authorized to speak publicly about it. (snip)

At various times, Kavanaugh, Barrett and Kethledge have been seen as the leading candidates. Trump likes the suspense: With a showman’s sense of timing, he boasted last year that he kept Gorsuch’s selection closely held until the prime-time announcement.

Who will it be (and why did we not see any sneering when Obama had a showman’s sense of timing when releasing his picks?) We’ll find out sometime today. Kavenaugh seems a bit squishy on social issues and illegal immigration. People can always find something to complain about. As long as we do not end up with another Anthony Kennedy or David Souter.

Regardless of who is picked, you can bet there are tons of opinion pieces and editorials ready to go about how Utterly Horrible The Pick Was and How We Are All Doomed. And you can expect abortion, the murder of the unborn by people who had unprotected, irresponsible sex with people they didn’t want to have children with, to be front and center in all of them.

You favor tRump appointing an activist justice who will reverse precedent to satisfy the religious beliefs of a minority of Americans. Although abortion is not murder, the goal of the Cons is to change the law to make abortion murder. If you also get your wish to make birth control less available you’ll have more unwanted pregnancies, and even more women to scorn.

Are birth control methods 100% effective? Do you advocate that married couples only have sex when they intend to have children?

Agreed, thousands of women each year have unprotected sex with people they didn’t want to have children with. Some 30,000 women are impregnated by rapists each year in America (Todd Akin’s stupidity not withstanding). Are you advocating that these women, many adolescents raped by a relative, carry to term?

I see that Jeffrey Jeffery has now become Jeff! I s’pose that was at least partially because I kept teasing him about misspelling his own name! https://www.thepiratescove.us/wp-content/plugins/wp-monalisa/icons/wpml_yahoo.gif Perhaps he believes that Jeff sounds more manly?

I still miss the added emoticons; the beating of a dead horse was certainly a good one.

Of course abortion is murder. The unborn child is a human being, and abortion is the deliberate, premeditated killing of that human being. Roe v Wade pretended that the unborn child wasn’t a legal person, so therefore he could simply be disposed of.

Dred Scott was unavailable for comment.

Just where does Jeffrey Jeffery Jeff get the idea that conservatives “wish to make birth control less available?” The stuff is very inexpensive, widely available, and they hand it out like candy in high schools. For myself, I think that if someone wishes to use contraception, it’s none of my business. But, if it’s none of my business, then it’s not my obligation to pay for it, either.

Wow. Get over yourself. We s’spose jeff, Jeffery, Jeffrey or even Geoffrey are all more manly than the moniker dana! But a lot of attractive ladies are named dana – Loesch, Perino, Delaney, Plato…

Abortion is not murder, as murder is a legal term. Do you consider executions, self-defense and wartime killings to be murder? If so, you’re not a hypocrite.

If you consider abortion the murder of babies, why do you tolerate it??? Why aren’t you tackling pregnant women heading into clinics??? No, you don’t REALLY believe that abortion is murder.

If tRump were rounding up Mexican children and marching them to Nazi-style crematoria, we’d grab guns and start shooting the perpetrators and we hope you’d join us. Yes, tRump’s brown shirts would likely kill us too, but how could anyone stand by as children are murdered? Fortunately tRump isn’t doing that. Yet.

Do you consider IUDs or morning after pills to be murder? American women have nearly as many miscarriages as they do live births. Do you favor spending your tax dollars on research to prevent miscarriages? If your taxes go up a dime a year to support free contraception, thus reducing unwanted pregnancies, and reducing abortions, wouldn’t that be a GOOD thing? Why does the abortion rate always drop under Dem Presidents?

Sorry dana, but guys like you are not pro-life or pro-child, you’re anti-woman and anti-liberal. It’s about control, not life.

        • Dana says:

Laughter. I wasn’t the one who had a problem with my own name!

Dana was a more common name for males when I was born, though it has decreased in popularity since 1953. My wife and I both know I’m a man; it doesn’t matter what others think.

Abortion is not murder, as murder is a legal term. Do you consider executions, self-defense and wartime killings to be murder? If so, you’re not a hypocrite.

Many things are not defined under the law as they should be; abortion should be described as murder, and it is, even if the law does not recognize it as such.

If you read my site, as you should, you would know that I am opposed to capital punishment. There may be times in which the taking of life is necessary, as in the case of self-defense or war, but if you have someone sufficiently in your power as to be able to execute him, he is, by definition, helpless, and thus it is not necessary to kill him.

Your speculations about President Trump and ‘brown shirts’ is just silliness, fantasies born of Trump Derangement Syndrome and, in most cases, recreational pharmaceuticals.

But you were the one linking given names to manliness. Stupid, I know, but you did it.

Kudos opposing capital punishment. Do you call it murder?

You’re certainly more sanguine re tRump than many Americans.

Oh, Christ, you are too easy.

So was Separate But Equal. So was Slavery (remember Dred Scott?).

      Moron.

And who says the people opposing abortion are a minority? Even the Lefty media says it’s not getting the numbers it once had.

And, of course, it’s murder. Just like the Krauts murdered people they thought were in the way.

      • jefferson says:

Jesus Fvcking Christ, you are too easy.

        No, abortion is not murder.
        Moron.

Explain why a so-called god kills more babies than do doctors.
        Imbecile.

It is clearly a minority desiring a ban on abortions.
        Cretin.

  2. jeff says:

Do you think tRump asked their positions on Presidential powers and impeachment during the interviews? LOL. Of course.

He is not picking a Supreme Court justice he is nominating one. The Senate must confirm him/her.

    • formwiz says:

      Actually, he apparently doesn’t.

And with the Senate run by McConnell, he’ll probably get his pick.

  3. Professor Hale says:

There are no guarantees that the person selected won’t change his mind on critical issues after he or she is seated. That is one of the problems with lifetime appointments. The other two problems are senility and hubris. There is no system that can be devised that will guarantee outcomes. There are always people who come up with better ideas and new ways to exploit the old system. I’m pretty sure the people who wrote the Constitution didn’t think of it as a “living document” that needed constant interpretation. They trusted the people to change the constitution if needed, not unelected kings in black robes to change it by redefining simple words.

  4. Jl says:

That’s a good one- “appointing an activist justice that will reverse precedent..”. No complaints on the activist judges that reversed the prior precedent to get where we are now?

  6. jeffy says:

If tRump was smart he’d nominate Robert Mueller.

  7. Professor Hale says:

Trump should nominate Hillary. It would be absurdly funny to watch Democrats try to sputter about how qualified she is, after gearing up to trash anyone Trump nominates, and thus setting the bar really low for the next nomination. Plus, she would never show up to do any real work, just phoning in her vote with whatever RBG, Latina, and Butch want. Plus, Hillary would hate it since there is no travel budget.
