WASHINGTON — Delaware's Joe Biden, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and a Democratic presidential candidate, called Wednesday for the use of military force to end the suffering in Darfur.
"I would use American force now," Biden said at a hearing before his committee. "I think it's time to put force on the table and use it."
Biden said senior U.S. military officials in Europe told him that 2,500 U.S. troops could "radically change the situation on the ground now."
"Let's stop the bleeding," Biden said. "I think it's a moral imperative."
Hmm, so, somehow, it is OK to intervene militarily in Darfur, but not in Iraq? Why was it not a moral imperative for Iraq, when a report stated that 50K children a year were dying in Iraq during the santion years? When hundreds of thousands were being raped, murdered, tortured, and dismembered? When a meglomaniac wanted to control the Mid East, sent suicide bombers into Israel, and support many terrorist groups.
Where was Joe when 850,000 Rwandan's were slaughtered?
I also do not remember Sudan attacking the USA, nor having anything to do with our homeland security. Interesting. They never attempted to assassinate a former American President, nor shot at our military. Nor made threats against the USA.
Why does Joe want America to be the world's policeman? Ah, right, because the UN is involved.
And, just to be clear, I agree with sending in the military to help stop the slaughter. It is the right and moral thing to do. Perhaps President Bush would have already agreed if the Democrats hadn't been so vocal in their opposition to any and all use of of military force.
Cruising the 'Net (I actually wrote this story Friday morning, just never got around to posting it same day), I see John Hawkins at Right Wing News picked it up, and has two insights:
If you're liberal and think we should send troops to Sudan…Again what do Democrats like to say in situations like this (?)…oh yeah, if you think we should invade Sudan, then you should join the military so you can go fight over there…chickenhawk.

Also Biden never said “invasion” he called for the use of military force. Big difference.
The chickenhawk argument really only works when there is a MINORITY of the American people who insist on a very unpopular military action. Since at this point 60-70% of Americans do NOT want to keep their army in Iraq they are telling the people who do want the Army to remain there to join up or shut up.
If a majority of Americans favor action in Sudan ( and I believe that they would favor at least SOME type of military action to be take against the Khartoum regime) then our military should go. The military serves the people of our country.
At this point even the professional military don’t like Bush’s Iraq debacle. The retention rate of West Point grads after there minimum requirements have been fulfilled are at a historic low. About 50% do not remain in the active regular army after 5 years.

The rightwing had better stop even thinking about what “bad” things the lefties are doing. They are losing support from their own side and should be thinking about ways to reduce that problem.
