Warmists Wonder If Momentum Is Building To Act On Hotcoldwetdry

More navel gazing

(National Journal) Is optimism building that the United States–and the rest of the world–can address global warming?

A series of extreme weather events –including droughts, wildfires, and heat waves –have thrust the topic of climate change into the limelight. Some influential energy experts, both conservative and moderate, are mulling a carbon tax to control fossil-fuel-generated emissions of greenhouse gases, which most scientists agree are causing global warming. Recent studies have shown that carbon emissions in the United States and other developed countries have actually stabilized and even decreased, due in part to increased reliance on natural gas over coal (the former results in 50 percent fewer carbon emissions than the latter). Some experts and prominent thinkers, such as New York Times’ David Leonhardt are also saying that despite the odds, the nascent renewable-energy industries are thriving as costs continue to come down.

Are these trends, or at least perceived trends, taken together signs that the United States and other parts of the world can come together in a way to address global warming even without an overarching agreement to cut greenhouse-gas emissions? What else is needed in order to spur more concrete action on this front? Is a carbon tax possible, both politically and economically? What other options should be on the table?

If you read the rest of the article, you’ll see 5 responses, all by those allowed by National Journal, and, would you be shocked to learn that they all one Someone Else to pay the piper? Why is it that Warmists never agitate for themselves and their comrades to lead the way and act in accordance with their belief set?

As far as a growing concensus to act, doubtful. Politicians want to get reelected and were able to witness the devastation wrought on the Queensland, Australia Labour party, which pushed all the “climate change” laws. In the elections earlier in 2012, Labour lost so many seats that they are no longer an officially recognized political party.

NJ Man Face Of Obama 2008 Buyers Remorse

One has to wonder how much the notion of “buyers remorse” will show up at the polls this November. For one NJ man, it’s large in his mind

(NJ.com) Michael Goldstein voted for Barack Obama in 2008, and supports gay marriage and an assault weapons ban. Before moving to New Jersey 11 years ago to raise a family, the Brooklyn native fit right in with other lifelong Democrats in Manhattan’s Upper West Side.

But Goldstein now says he has buyer’s remorse. And last week the 48-year-old East Brunswick man became the face and the voice of a national campaign aimed at converting fellow Jews who as loyal Democrats voted for Obama four years ago into supporters of Republican Mitt Romney.

In a video on the home page of the Republican Jewish Coalition, http://www.rjchq.org/, Goldstein talks about his disappointment in Obama’s handling of the economy and U.S. relations with Israel.

Today, the coalition will launch what its national director Matt Brooks called an unparallelled $6.5 million ad campaign titled “My Buyer’s Remorse,” targeting Jewish voters in battleground states who have changed their minds about Obama. The launch coincides with Romney’s visit to Israel.

Unshockingly, Democrats are whining and making false accusations, ones of astroturfing and ad hominums, as well as throwing out some lies about Obama’s time in office. But

In his video, Goldstein, a community college administrator (he declines to say where) and father of two, cites several reasons why he regrets voting for Obama, including the scarcity of jobs, particularly for recent college graduates, and Obama’s 2011 assertion that the 1967 Middle East boundaries should be the starting point for negotiations over a separate Palestinian state.

“I was a big Obama supporter. I really believed in him and believed in what he stood for,” Goldstein says in the video. But, he continues, “when he gave the speech about the ‘67 borders, it was nothing that had come up in his campaign originally. That really changed my mind about him.”

Will this change a lot of Jewish voters minds, as they tend to vote Democrat in higher numbers than for Republicans? Perhaps. Time will tell.

Watts Up With That? Study Shows Half Of US Warming Is Fake

Anthony Watts, Evan Jones, Steve McIntyre, and Dr. John Christy have a new study up that highlights what most who are interested in science thought: that the temperature record for the United States is artificially inflated, releasing it for crowd sourcing the day before the supposed BEST study was supposed to be released

New study shows half of the global warming in the USA is artificial

A reanalysis of U.S. surface station temperatures has been performed using the recently WMO-approved Siting Classification System devised by METEO-France’s Michel Leroy. The new siting classification more accurately characterizes the quality of the location in terms of monitoring long-term spatially representative surface temperature trends. The new analysis demonstrates that reported 1979-2008 U.S. temperature trends are spuriously doubled, with 92% of that over-estimation resulting from erroneous NOAA adjustments of well-sited stations upward. The paper is the first to use the updated siting system which addresses USHCN siting issues and data adjustments. (big snip)

These factors, combined with station siting issues, have led to a spurious doubling of U.S. mean temperature trends in the 30 year data period covered by the study from 1979 – 2008.

What they essentially did was take a look at the surface measuring stations, something Watts has been doing since 2007, and looking at the raw data for those stations. One thing they found was data was skewed sharply upward, especially at properly cited stations.

Jo Nova boils it down: “This is one of those blockbuster moments when the pieces come together. For Anthony it’s five years work, and overturns so many studies all at once. This graph rather sums it all up. Raw well placed thermometers recorded 0.15C per decade. Badly sited thermometers recorded 0.25C, and adjusted ones recorded 0.3C!  Fully twice the warming trend.”

James Delingpole writes

What it means, in a nutshell, is that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) – the US government body in charge of America’s temperature record, has systematically exaggerated the extent of late 20th century global warming. In fact, it has doubled it.

So, in the spirit of magnanimity in total crushing victory I would urge readers of this blog not to crow too much about the devastating blow Watts’s findings will have on the Guardian’s battalion of environment correspondents, on the New York Times, on NOAA, on Al Gore, on the Prince of Wales, on the Royal Society, on Professor Muller, or on any of the other rent-seekers, grant-grubbers, eco-loons, crony capitalists, junk scientists, UN apparatchiks, EU technocrats, hideous porcine blobsters, demented squawking parrots, life-free loser trolls, paid CACC-amites and True Believers in the Great Global Warming Religion.

Well, crowing wouldn’t do anything, because Warmists are not interested in science, they are interested in politics, social engineering, social/climate justice, anything but science. The whole point of pushing “climate change” is to put more money and power in the hands of The Government, giving them control over the private sector and individuals.

Empty Seats Abound At Olympics: Maybe Mitt Romney Was Kinda Correct

Hey, remember a few days ago when Romney said this?

“There are a few things that were disconcerting, the stories about the private security firm not having enough people, supposed strike of the immigration and customs officials, that obviously is not something which is encouraging. Because there are three parts that makes Games successful.

“Number one, of course, are the athletes. That’s what overwhelmingly the Games are about. Number two are the volunteers. And they’ll have great volunteers here. But number three are the people of the country. Do they come together and celebrate the Olympic moment? And that’s something which we only find out once the Games actually begin.”

That’s the full quote, not just the first paragraph, or even just the “disconcerting” part, which most media outlets used. And it led to P.M. David Cameron saying “”We are holding an Olympic Games in one of the busiest, most active, bustling cities in the world. Of course it’s easier if you hold an Olympic Games in the middle of nowhere” and London Mayor Boris Johnson “”He wants to know whether we’re ready. Are we ready? Are we ready? Yes, we are.” Oh, really?

(Washington Post) Hoping to quell controversy after large swaths of seats appeared unfilled, London Olympic organizers said British troops and schoolchildren had been given free tickets Sunday to fill many of the vacant rows.

A day after the city reveled in the splendor of Danny Boyle’s critically acclaimed Opening Ceremonies, many locals were piqued Saturday when television footage showed empty seats at some of the most popular sporting events, including swimming and gymnastics, that they had been told were sold out. Such scenes ignited speculation that corporate sponsors had been provided tickets they weren’t using, leaving the public on the outside looking in.

This has prompted a big investigation into why there are tons of people mascarading as empty seats. The UK Daily Mail has a ton of pictures of those empty seats, and troops filling a few of them. So, looks like Mitt was able to fill seats in the “middle of nowhere” yet, in London, they are having issues. Of course, the people want to come together to celebrate the Olympics, it’s just there are too many problems getting them into the seats.

Then you have parents of athletes turned away from the Aquatics center.

Oh, and the Olympics flame, which is supposed to be kept lit the entire time, was extinguished to move it to another venue so that people could actually see it outside the venue, a criticism already lobbed.

Perhaps what Romney said wasn’t a gaffe.

Globull Warming Could Make New York City Disappear In 10 Years

As with so many of the more interesting environmental questions, we really don’t have very satisfactory measurements of the carbon dioxide problem. On the other hand, this very clearly is a problem, and, perhaps most particularly, is one that can seize the imagination of persons normally indifferent to projects of apocalyptic change.

The process is a simple one. Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has the effect of a pane of glass in a greenhouse. The C02 content is normally in a stable cycle, but recently man has begun to introduce instability through the burning of fossil fuels. At the turn of the century several persons raised the question whether this would change the temperature of the atmosphere. Over the years the hypothesis has been refined, and more evidence has come along to support it. It is now pretty clearly agreed that the C02 content will rise 25% by 2000. This could increase the average temperature near the earth’ s surface by 7 degrees Fahrenheit. This in turn could raise the level of the sea by 10 feet. Goodbye New York.

Goodbye Washington, for that matter. We have no data on Seattle.

Everybody Panic………wait, what? This is a pronouncement from a memo from Daniel Moynihan to John Ehrlichman in September, 1969? Yet another prognostication of doom and gloom that has failed to come to fruition? Hmph. Interesting. (via Free Republic from Climate Depot)

100 Days Left Till General Election

It’s crunch time….once the summer is really over

(Washington Post) There are 100 days left in what, at times, has seemed like an endless presidential election. And these are the bewildered sounds of the Undecided American, trying to decide.

“I know Obama says he has put people back to work, and I don’t dispute that,” Pam Nickel said at an outdoor shopping mall in Perrysburg, Ohio, on Tuesday. Underemployment is a big issue for her, though. “I don’t know that the last four years will sway me as much as what happens in the next few months,” she said.

That’s probably the best quote in the whole article. There’s quite a bit of mentions in the article about 90% having already determined their choice for president. But, anything can happen in the last 100 days. In 2008, John McCain had the Bush 2004 states locked up and was competitive in quite a few Kerry 2004 states, even leading in some. Then, he pulled his “I’m suspending my campaign” foolishness, and his campaign fell off the cliff.

The conversations with voters also show how little the daily media circus of gaffes and campaign ads and surrogate attacks actually moves its intended targets. After months of heavy advertising by Romney, many voters knew only that he is Mormon, rich and not Obama.

Which is why the Bain attacks on Romney aren’t working. Really, a good chunk of the country isn’t paying all that much attention, and won’t till we get deep into August, more likely into September.

This weekend, the Obama campaign kicks off the last 100 days of campaigning with 4,600 small events around the country, including Olympics-watching parties, house parties and “Barbecues for Barack.”

The cult of personality is in effect to re-elect Chairman Obama.

The rest of the article is quotes from people in several swing states. Unfortunately, pages 4-5 seem devoid of content. There is no real ending. What it will come down to are the last few months, and what happens. What happens with the economy? Is there a big world event? And let’s not forget the debates, which could be huge. Obama has the advantage of being a sitting president, but, he rarely steps out of his little bubble and debates. He prefers giving pronouncements from the summit. Romney, on the other hand, has spent well over a year debating, and should be ready for anything the Obama perpetual campaign throws at him. Time will tell.

Rumor: BEST To Say Earth Has Warmed 1.5C On Monday

We’re dooooooooomed!

(Reason) Stress – this is a rumor. However, the rumor says that next week Richard Muller will release the latest Berkeley Earth Surface Temperature analysis of surface temperature data going back as far as the 18th century. Muller, once skeptical of the temperature records that showed considerable global warming in recent decades, set up BEST to reanalyze that data. In 2011, BEST’s preliminary analysis of land temperature data found: ….. (snip)

The rumors say that new BEST reanalysis will show that global average temperature has increased by 1.5 degrees Celsius since pre-industrial times and will suggest that most of the warming since the 1950s is the result of increased greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere.

Oh, God, not 1.5C!!!!!!!!! Things will spontaneously catch on fire over a whopping 2.3 Fahrenheit increase since pre-industrial times, a rise that is pretty much normal in terms of the historical record. The Little Ice Age supposedly was down about 4 degrees, which destroyed crops and paved the way for the Black Plague, huge long wars, revolutions, etc.

I find myself not caring… almost at all… about the fact that the “earth” has warmed 1.5 celcius since a randomly chosen prior date.

Well, come on, Paul, Warmists need to keep the people in fear (which isn’t working too well, considering that climate change tends to poll dead last on the list of concerns) and keep the money train going.
