U.S. Transportation Secretary joins Gov. Cooper to break ground on new Winston-Salem trail
Pete Buttigieg, secretary of the U.S. Department of Transportation, was among those on hand Tuesday to break ground on a new multi-use trail in Winston-Salem.
The shovels were out to turn the first dirt on the Salem Parkway path, a 1.3-mile bike-and-pedestrian urban trail linking Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist to Truist Field and surrounding neighborhoods.
North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper was among the dignitaries on hand. He says the Triad is in the middle of an economic boom and investments in transit projects are critical to sustain the growth.
“We know that in order to make sure we handle all the businesses that want to come here, all the people that want to come here, that we make sure that we make it easier, safer and cleaner to get from one place to the next.”
The trail is partially funded by President Joe Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Earlier in the day, Buttigieg visited construction sites on Winston-Salem’s Northern Beltway Project.
While the Beltway project is a road for fossil fueled vehicles, this urban trail is exactly that: for pedestrians and people on bikes. To the tune of $4.8 million for a whopping 1.3 miles between a few buildings, a hospital, Truist Stadium and downtown. The Elites really do want you to walk/bike everywhere, not travel in fossil fueled vehicles. To be clear, I’m not against walking areas, especially in urbanized areas, this just seems rather excessive in cost. And they do have ulterior motives while they take lots of fossil fueled trips.
How many will ride it?
Will it make money?
How long will construction really take?
How much will it really cost?
Is this really necessary? Were citizens calling for it?— William Teach2 ??????? #refuseresist (@WTeach2) July 2, 2024
There are no answers to those questions. Amtrak already goes from Raleigh to Richmond. This choo choo is supposed to go a lot faster in speed, but, it will still be quicker to drive. As I’ve said, it would be a whole lot better if there was a train going down to the beach area near Wilmington and out to Asheville. I’d take it. Driving back after a day at the beach, even taking a quick beach shower to get the salt, sand, and sweat off, stinks. I’d be happy to take the train back.

President Joe Biden is vowing to fight on in the presidential race following his disastrous debate performance, which sent Democrats into a spiral of panic, questioning his ability to forge on.

President Biden on Tuesday called denying the effects of climate change “really, really dumb” and said that extreme heat and other weather disasters fueled by rising global temperatures have cost billions of dollars and thousands of American lives.
For 15 straight years, our old dog Clark — a hound/shepherd/retriever mix who was born in the woods and loved the outdoors ever after — spent the Fourth of July in our walk-in shower. He seemed to believe a windowless shower in a windowless bathroom offered his best chance of surviving the shrieking terror that was raining down from the night sky outside.
