On Black Friday, Why Not Think About Hotcoldwetdry Gifts?

So, now that Thanksgiving is over, Warmists turn their sights towards Christmas and making sure everything is super “sustainable”

Give a gift that sustains life on Earth

Before heading out to start your holiday shopping today, pause one moment to think about African elephants, polar bears and the Pacific walrus. They are among the world’s animals whose existence is threatened.

The Wolrd Wildlife Fund’s annual Living Planet Report warns us that human activity is outstripping the Earth’s resources, and has killed off 52 percent of the world’s mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish in just the last 40 years. Imagine how that pace will increase over the next four decades.

Compared to babies born today, those of us over 40 came into a world teeming with wildlife.

But thanks to over-fishing, over-hunting, deforestation, excessive carbon emissions and the inability to reduce global population growth, we have accelerated the loss of non-human life.

I was with them right up to “excessive carbon emissions”. And then they jumped to their over-population meme, which, of course, means providing contraception and abortions for minorities, meaning Black people, in third world nations.

Reducing our reliance on fossil fuels would also be a great Christmas gift to the natural world. Our insatiable thirst for oil has reached the Democratic Republic of Congo, where new technologies that permit deeper drilling have encouraged oil companies to explore for oil. The resulting loss of habitat for forest elephants, along with poaching for ivory, mean these great animals may well become extinct in our lifetime.

I wonder if the editorial board of The Olympian has given up their own reliance on fossil fuels.

Disappearing sea ice is also a problem for the Pacific walrus. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service reports that 35,000 walrus have gone ashore in Alaska, where they are vulnerable to predators, because they normally safely rest on sea ice. In both cases, climate change resulting from overuse of fossil fuels is to blame.

Boy, that has been debunked so hard I’m surprised the editorial doesn’t grow from the computer screen like Pinocchio’s nose.

We can do that by using public transit more, and driving personal cars less. We can recycle, compost and support sustainable businesses. We can purchase fish certified by the Marine Stewardship Council, and lumber certified by the Timber Stewardship Council.

By “we”, they mean you.

I have to wonder how much the WWF paid them to write this editorial.

Hydro-electric Dams Now Deemed Bad For “Climate Change”

Remember the good old days when Warmists said we should transition away from fossil fuels for energy and look towards solar, wind, geothermal and hydrothermal? Well, wind is known to have a negative impact on the environment. Solar power is not exactly great for the environment, either. Many environmental groups have protested the building of solar and wind projects because of the environmental damage.

When it comes to dams, hydro-electric or otherwise, hardcore environmentalists have long had a bugaboo over them, and even want existing ones torn down. Now we find out that they are super bad for “climate change”

Dams Emerge as Key Climate Change Suspects

Efforts by many countries to reduce their carbon footprint by building hydroelectric dams could be misbegotten should these facilities also prove to be a major source of greenhouse gas emissions.

While dams have long been believed to make a major contribution to reducing carbon emissions by enabling the generation of renewable energy in the form of hydropower, researchers now suspect they could be one of the world’s leading sources of greenhouse gas emissions.

The reservoirs created by dams generate copious amounts of methane as a result of the bacteria that thrive in their oxygen-deprived environments.

These microbes are essentially the same as those that occupy the intestinal tracts of bovine livestock and human landfills, emitting methane instead of carbon dioxide after consuming organic carbon to produce energy.

The study itself shows that the created lakes emit huge amounts of methane. Which, yes, is in itself a danger for AGW. It is interesting that almost every type of power generation pushed by Warmists has issues. Building dams can also significantly change the local environment. Some will see this as damage, others just as a change.

Good Grief: “Ferguson Is Now A Symbol, Not A Place” Or Something

When I first read that headline this morning on my tablet using the Washington Post app, minus the “good grief” and “or something”, I thought it would be bad when I started reading on the computer after grabbing the freshly made coffee. I really didn’t think it would be this bad. Or be an opinion piece in the Style section. Here’s Krissah Thompson

Six months ago, Ferguson, Mo., was the kind of nameless suburb visitors to the city of St. Louis passed through. That was before a white police officer shot an unarmed black teenager on a street this summer and months of daily protests transformed the unassuming city into a symbol.

Ferguson is now a word that evokes feelings.

Though it has been less than four months since Michael Brown was killed, the town seems to have entered the pantheon of places that stand as metaphors. Ferguson’s symbolism now sits alongside Selma’s significance in the civil rights movement, Columbine as a symbol of teenage rage and gun violence, and Kent State’s historic link to anti-war protests. Those are places that have adjusted — some more smoothly than others — to their emblematic meaning.

Do we really need to discuss how insanely stupid this is? Those on the right will immediately understand that this is double facepalm material, those on the left will be bobbing their head in agreement with the article, without realizing that their policies are responsible for the problems in Ferguson. Anyhow, what kind of “symbol” is Ferguson?

In Ferguson, dozens of buildings and vehicles burned Monday night after the announcement of the grand jury’s decision not to indict officer Darren Wilson in Brown’s killing. It is impossible to imagine that the town will ever be the same. And people who knew the Ferguson of old are grappling with the change.

It’s surely a symbol of people who feel that it was A-OK for Michael Brown to rob a store, assault the owner, get stoned, walk in the middle of the street, attack a police officer in his cruiser, attempt to take the officer’s gun, then attempt to attack the officer out of the car. And, because of these actions, they feel it is OK to burn their own neighborhoods, riot, loot, and otherwise get violent, all in Michael Brown’s name.

Actually, I guess that does make sense. Michael Brown had been a violent criminal immediately preceding his death, so the protesters are just following his lead. Nothing says “symbol” like looting a McDonalds and a couple of beauty parlors.

It is certainly a symbol of the media’s excess, their attempt to turn a criminal action by Michael Brown into a cause celebre about raaaaacism and police brutality. It’s also a symbol that some people are complete idiots, taking the side of a violent criminal. But, then, liberals have often seemed to take the side of criminals.

Happy Thanksgiving Pinup! BTW, Your Dry, Stringy Turkey Is Caused By Climate Change

It wouldn’t be Thanksgiving without a patriotic pinup. It also wouldn’t be a modern Thanksgiving without someone complaining about “climate change”

Expert says climate change negatively affecting turkey meat quality

Gale Strasburg balks at the suggestion that he is trying to save Thanksgiving. He is a food scientist. He doesn’t rescue holidays.

But he is trying to save the rest of us from a future of dry and stringy Thanksgiving turkeys.

Turkeys as it happens, are vulnerable to heat and cold. Exposure to extreme temperatures early in their development can create changes in the quality of their meat that last all the way to the dining room table.

“With climate change, as we understand it, there is predicted to be more variation in the weather patterns, so we expect temperature swings from very hot weather to very cold weather,” said Strasburg, a professor of food science and human nutrition at Michigan State University.

So, greenhouse gases, particularly the Warmists main focus, CO2, what they call “carbon pollution”, are going to create more cold swings? Hence, the change of the name from “global warming” to “climate change”, because nature is not cooperating with the increase in greenhouse gas buildup. No, I won’t explain what a greenhouse gas is: either you understand it or you’re a Warmist.

But, hey, this is an excuse for being a bad cook. Fortunately, you’ll have some good talking points for the day

How To Convince Your Right-Wing Uncle To Act On Climate Change This Thanksgiving

If you’re like most Americans, you probably spend most Thanksgivings with family, crowded around a dinner table with turkey, potatoes, and pie. If you’re like the author of this article, you probably spend a portion of that dinner talking about the politics of climate change with your right-wing uncle, Richard.

Richard knows climate change is real. But he also thinks carbon emissions represent human prosperity, and he hates the idea of giving government money to solar panel makers or wind farms. Most of all, he despises the Environmental Protection Agency, which he thinks is the ultimate symbol of big government imposing unrealistic regulations that will financially cripple the industries they affect.

Contrary to what you may believe, you can achieve a productive conversation on this topic this Thanksgiving without ruining the entire holiday. Here’s how to talk to Richard — or your family’s version of him — about the benefits of climate change action, and why the principles can actually align with his world view.

Here are the ideas

  • Keep your emotional arguments in check (wait, a Progressive not flipping a lid? Good luck with that)
  • Present climate action as economical and patriotic, not ‘good for the planet’ (good grief)
  • Remind him that carbon is actually harmful: Uncle Richard is not an entirely unreasonable man. He knows science is a real thing. (Note: If your right-wing uncle doesn’t think climate change is real, you’re in the wrong place. Learn how to talk to him about the reality of climate science here). (note: remind your walking nephew/niece that we’re not talking about carbon, but carbon dioxide, and, furthermore, ask them how voting for Obama is working out, what with the kid graduating with $29,400 in debt and working at Starbucks.)
  • Appeal to his love of property rights and homeland security (good grief)

Of course, if you read the article, you’ll notice a severe lack of actual actions, other than “carbon taxes”. Surprise! Funny how Warmists never want to do anything in their own lives.

Ace wonders about something

Supposedly progressives are super-informed and Love Science. Indeed, that’s the main “political” argument they’re actually arguing for. (big snip, you should head over and read the middle)

But if they believe all these things so terribly fiercely, shouldn’t they already sorta know why they believe them?

The thing is, these are not really things they understand. These are things they are told. They are given talking points, and those talking points often change. Just a few years ago cold snaps were just weather, and weather was not climate. Now, cold and snow are “extreme weather”, and extreme weather is caused by “climate change”. Young kids are told not to put their fingers in an electrical socket or play with matches. They don’t understand why they shouldn’t do either. Like most Progressive beliefs, these are things they are told to memorize without understanding, hence the reason most devolve to boilerplate personal attacks quickly.

Anyhow, Happy Thanksgiving, you super evil deniers taking your fossil fueled trips to eat evil meat causing all sorts of extreme weather.

#Ferguson: This Is What Theocracy Looks Like(?)

A strange story from the Associated Press

About 100 protesters, including many clergy members, are protesting in the streets of the St. Louis suburb where it was announced that a grand jury had decided not to indict a Ferguson police officer in the death of Michael Brown.

The demonstrators began blocking intersections in downtown Clayton, Missouri, shortly after sunrise Tuesday. They have been walking in circles, singing spirituals and chanting, “This is what theocracy looks like.” They also observed a 4½-minute moment of silence to mark the 4½ hours that Brown’s body remained on the Ferguson street before it was removed.

So,  why? There seems to be a conspicuous lack of context. Is it because the decision is what a Theocracy does, which would be strange coming from men of the cloth. Is it because they are men of the cloth telling it like it is? Not sure. Any ideas?

Lest you think it is Fox News cutting the AP article, Think Progress carries it to the word.

One thing I do know is that these clergy aren’t helping. They’re engaged in blocking intersections in Ferguson in defense of a man who robbed a store, assaulted the store owner, and assaulted a police officer, all leading to his death. Why would the clergy support that lawlessness?

Bummer: Hotcoldwetdry Might Maybe Possibly Change Thanksgiving Meals

If you start thinking “hey, this seems familiar, are you sure this isn’t a story from years past?”, you’re certainly right. It seems familiar to me, and I know I’ve posted similar articles in years past as we approach Thanksgiving.

Climate Change Could Alter Thanksgiving Meals

I like how the headline says “could” while the permalink says “will”. I guess they realized that it would be foolish to take a hard stance when the facts are iffy

Food is at the center of many American holidays. And changes to the climate pattern will affect where and how food is grown. The Guardian takes a look at how the Thanksgiving meal might be affected by climate change if it continues at the current rate.

Turkeys depend on corn for food so changes to the corn crop could substantially affect the turkey market. Since corn cannot seed at a temperature higher than ninety-five degrees, says US food guru Michael Pollan, production may eventually need to move north. And if it moves as north as Canada, we’ll be importing more of our Thanksgiving meals.

Pumpkin Pie supplies were put at risk in 2009 as floods swept Morton, Illinois, where most domestic pumpkins are grown. Substantial increases in rainfall may endanger current pumpkin infrastructure. Concerning the crust, the the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change confirms that world wheat yields are down due to rising temperatures.

This is all part of the typical Scareathon pushed by the Cult of Warming. Hey, there were floods? That never happened before. It must be due to Other People driving fossil fueled vehicles.

Corn? The main corn producer states, Iowa, Illinois, Nebraska, and Minnesota, have a long way to go hit 95 degress. In order, their average summer monthly temperatures are 71.6, 73.4, 69, and 66.8. That’s for June, July, and August.

If you click that Guardian link, they take on pecan pie, wine, stuffing, potatoes, and other Thanksgiving foods. I love the way the food looks in the picture, kinda like a Michelle Obama school meal. Anyhow, this just goes to show that Warmist will attempt to ruin everything with their insane adherence to their Cult.

Hey, Here’s How To Talk About “Climate Change” At Thanksgiving

Of course, when you, the Warmist, start yammering on about Hotcoldwetdry, I would hope you are not actually eating turkey, because turkey itself is bad for “climate change”. In fact, most food causes “climate change” through various means, including the veggies, so, you shouldn’t eat anything. Ever. Just being a human is bad for “climate change”

How to Talk About Climate Change at Thanksgiving: Recipes for Good Conversations

Or, just a good way to get uninvited next year.

I know many families ban political discussions around the dinner table. While that’s not how I grew up, I understand why people want to avoid raised voices and hurt feelings, especially while they’re digging into stuffing. Unfortunately, many people would consider a discussion about climate change political, too. That sentiment can create a spiral of silence, according to George Marshall, who wrote a masterful guide to how we talk about climate change.

So if you care about climate issues, should you march into Thanksgiving dinner with some graphs, charts, and talking points? I sure hope not. For one thing, those aren’t edible (except pie charts, which are delicious). But even if you’re not trying to talk about climate change, it can and does come up.

Of course, if you manage to get involved in a heated discussion, here are your talking points

Course one: serve up questions, not arguments

If someone tells you the Earth isn’t really warming, it’s an invitation to argue about temperature data and scientific authority. Further, some folks who don’t accept the science can raise a surprisingly large number of misleading points because there’s so much misinformation out there from which to draw.

Scientific authority equals consensus, which is not science. But, the author is right, there is a lot of misinformation out there, emanating from Believer scientists and policy wonks. Anyhow, temperature increases do not prove anthropogenic causation.

Course two: served by people who share someone’s values

In his forthcoming book from Stanford University Press, How Culture Shapes the Climate Debate, the University of Michigan’s Andrew Hoffman argues that we can easily get caught up in the culture war when we talk about climate change. “Certainly, Al Gore and Rush Limbaugh evoke visceral responses from individuals on either side of the political divide while also resonating strongly with those who agree with their ideology,” Hoffman writes. “But individuals with credibility on both sides of the debate can act as ‘climate brokers.’”

Hoffman recommends pointing to people who share an audience’s values when it comes to climate and energy issues.

For instance, some people are uncomfortable with climate change because it feels like it’s in conflict with their religious views. You can point them to researchers like Katharine Hayhoe and religious leaders like Richard Cizik.

Say what? Most won’t even know who they are, and those who do will understand that they are full of mule fritters.

Course three: clear the table and bring the solutions

After you’ve tried the steps above, a discussion might still devolve into an argument. The good news is, you can always talk about solutions.

Unsurprisingly, the article fails to mention what those solutions are, because the minute they are brought up for discussing it’s clearly understood that said solutions are all about pushing Progressive (nice fascist) policies, like redistribution and government control of citizen’s lives.

After this comes “pie”, whereby the Warmists should send emails and Facebook posts, annoying their friends and relatives. All while refusing to practice what they preach.
