This Year’s Brasstown Possum Drop May Feature Possum Roadkill Or Stew

PETA has long had a burr up their bums over the use of a live possum, put in a cage and slowly dropped on New Year’s Eve. Why? They have nothing better to do. This year might be a bit different

(Raleigh N&O) The annual “Possum Drop” celebration in the mountain community of Brasstown will go on this New Year’s Eve, the organizer says – just not with a living opossum.

That leaves open a number of possibilities for the starring role: A stuffed possum. A toy possum. Or something else entirely.

“We may have possum stew or something if we find one dead,” organizer Clay Logan said Monday. “No live possums, let’s put it like that.”

Logan says using a live opossum as part of the celebration will be put on hold until a lawsuit by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is resolved. The event has drawn national attention because of PETA’s attempts to stop it in recent years. But even before that notoriety, the celebration attracted thousands to the community more than 300 miles from Raleigh in the southwest corner of the state. It is now in its 21st year.

No possum has ever been hurt, and they are treated very well, including being fed, before being released back into the wild. The whole affair is family friendly, even going so far as to ban alcohol at the event. But, as you know, some people have to be perpetually outraged, so no live possum this year.

Slate’s Top 10 “Civil Liberties Violations” Of 2014 Is A Hoot

When one thinks about bat guano insane webzines, Salon is usually one of the first recipients of that thought. Salon is so barking moonbat that I often wonder if they do it on purpose, that they’re simply trolling the Internet, that this their articles are over-the-top on purpose. Then we get to Slate, which acts almost like Salon’s little sister/brother (I wonder if Slate can provide just a few more ad popups?)

The 10 Worst Civil Liberties Violations of 2014

The world may not actually be falling apart—but it feels like America is. From police brutality and botched executions to voter suppression and election corruption, 2014 was a terrible year for civil liberties in the United States. Protests were quelled by military-grade weapons in scenes worthy of a banana republic, and the divide between the rich and the poor in the freedom and justice they are afforded is Dickensian in its scope. While the country has evolved on marriage equality, it often appears to be backtracking on just about every other advance we have made, from the racial and gender progress of the 1960s to the most basic principles of the criminal justice system. Below, we’ve listed the top 10 civil liberties nightmares of 2014 in no particular order. Here’s hoping this list is harder to put together next year.

Some are more hoot-worthy than others

9. The Supreme Court invites our corporate bosses to takes away our birth control.

In the court’s Hobby Lobby decision, the same five conservatives ruled that “closely held corporations” had a religious right to deny female employees certain forms of birth control, if those employers believe the device or method causes abortions. It matters not at all whether the device or method in fact causes abortions. Writing for the court, Justice Samuel Alito downplayed the notion that women’s health and autonomy are “compelling interests,” leaving female employees’ intensely private health care choices at the mercy of their bosses. Alito reasoned that employees could rely on the government’s birth control accommodation granted to religious hospitals and colleges —then the court immediately suggested that the accommodation might be against the law, too.

I love this line of thought that far Left Progressives push, as it bears no relation to reality, and it portrays women as poor little things that need a big Progressive to watch out for them, that women cannot afford to spend a few bucks on condoms and birth control pills, that they can only do this under the Big Hand Of Government. It’s a very sexist position held by Progressives.

2. Abortion clinic closures.

Roe v. Wade is still good law in America. Abortion is still legal. And yet throughout the country, abortion clinics are being shuttered at record rates. According to this report from Bloomberg last month, the rate of clinic closures is unprecedented. Since 2011, legislative reforms, protests, and a series of onerous and costly new regulations have ensured that more clinics than ever are closing their doors. One in 10 clinics have shut or stopped providing the procedure since 2011. Four states, Mississippi, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming, have only a single clinic now in operation.

It’s very upsetting for Progressives that abortion clinics are now obliged to have the same standards as other medical facilities, and that they will actually be inspected regularly. I thought Progressives cared about women’s health? It’s very telling that so many clinics have closed because they cannot be at the same standards as a typical medical clinic.

1. Grand juries reviewing police misconduct.

2014 has been a terrible year for relations between cops and citizens. A spiral of mistrust has led to a spiral of brutality and violence that exploded with the killings of Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Tamir Rice, Akai Gurley, and John Crawford, among others. Then Ismaaiyl Brinsley shot and killed two Brooklyn police officers, claiming he was acting in the name of those who had been killed by police. This deplorable, appalling act of alleged retribution sparked a new wave of recriminations and accusations.

One fundamental problem with the criminal justice system that came to light this fall illuminates the reason there is such distrust between police and communities of color: We should not continue to use the grand jury system to hold police to account.

So, let me get this straight: they’re upset about what they perceive as botched justice, so in order to address this “justice denied”, they want to eliminate the Fifth Amendment Rights of all police officers “No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury…”.

There are several other things they are Very Upset about, such as 7. The great torture shrug. Say, whatever happened to that torture report? After a brief outrage, the issue has vanished like a fart in the wind. Then there’s 6. Voting rights, for which they cannot provide any factual evidence that voter ID and other instituted measures reduced voting.

In fairness, they do have a point regarding 4. The Ferguson protest crackdown (cops going overboard with use of military implements and tactics early on) and 3. Civil forfeiture, especially taking away property without even proving that a crime has occurred.

What they forgot are the continued revelations as to the CIA spying on Americans. And the many civil rights violations of Obama and his administration. These are issues that affect a huge swath of Americans.

Obama Bumps Military Wedding To Play Golf

Even Democrats can’t possibly defend O on this one. If they try, they should just imagine their outrage if we substitute “Bush” for “Obama” (via Twitchy)

Natalie Heimel and her fiancé, Edward Mallue Jr., a pair of captains in the Army, were walking from their wedding rehearsal on Saturday at the 16th tee box at Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course in Hawaii when they were informed they’d have to move their wedding, scheduled for the next day.

President Barack Obama wanted to play through.

It was the second time that day that the couple heard from the nation’s commander in chief, whose affinity for golf has, at times, caused political headaches for the White House. Stationed in Hawaii and knowing the president spends his Christmas holiday on the islands, they invited him to their ceremony on a lark. They had received a letter earlier on Saturday saying Obama regretted he couldn’t come and wishing them happiness on their wedding day.

“It was kind of ironic they got the letter from them and then, within hours, they were told they had to be moved due to him,” Jamie McCarthy, Mallue’s sister, said in an interview. “It was emotional, especially for her—she’s the bride and in less than 24 hours they had to change everything they had planned.”

In all fairness, perhaps no one on his staff told him about the wedding when he said he wanted to play a round. Even if he didn’t know beforehand, this is the tone of selfishness that he sets within his administration.

Rufa Red Knot Birds Totally At Risk From Hotcoldwetdry Or Something

Actually, something

The bird that travels 29,000km a year
The Rufa red knot’s epic annual migration from Tierra del Fuego to the Canadian Arctic risks being grounded by climate change

They call him Moonbird, or sometimes, just “B95” – the number from the band on his leg. Moonbird is the most famous, charismatic member of a group of mid-sized shorebirds named Rufa red knots, whose numbers have plummeted so dramatically in the past several decades that they just became the first bird ever listed under the Endangered Species Act with climate change cited as a “primary threat”.

Rufa red knots are among the avian world’s most extreme long-range flyers (especially in light of their relatively small size). They travel vast distances – some flying more than 29,000km – in the course of an annual migration that begins in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, and extends all the way up to the Canadian Arctic(and back again). (snip)

Assuming that Moonbird is still living – the last sighting was in May – there are reasons to wonder whether there will ever be another bird that is his equal. Why? Simply put, his subspecies has been devastated, and climate change will make matters worse – making extreme survival of the sort that Moonbird has achieved that much more difficult.

See, Moonbird is 21, and the species generally live 6-7. And “climate change” is Bad!!!!!!! Oh, wait

According to the US Fish and Wildlife Service, there has been a 75% decline in numbers of Rufa red knots since the 1980s. One key reason is that the birds, during their northward migration, stop off in Delaware Bay in May and dine on the buried eggs of horseshoe crabs – a food source upon which they vitally depend. But those crabs saw their numbers plummet when fishermen realised if they chopped up horseshoe crabs and threw them in the water, the smell would draw in eels and conch. When numbers of horseshoe crabs crashed, so did numbers of the birds.

It’s not “one key reason”, it is the main reason. Birds have dealt with changes in the climate for tens of millions of years. Changes that can affect their migratory patterns, their nesting areas, and the places they stop for food. In this case, yes, Mankind has seriously damaged a main spot they eat. But, instead of dealing with the real environmental damage, these Warmist wankers have to interject their pet loon cult into the mix.

Police Hating Protesters Plan New Year’s Eve Disruptions

I’m sure a bit of violence and looting will be in order

(Breitbart) Anti-police protesters are planning to disrupt New Year’s Eve celebrations at major metropolitan sites. The website Stop Mass Incarceration calls upon activists to not allow New Years Eve 2015 “to go down because business as usual in Amerikkka includes wanton police murder of Black people.”

The announcement says that as Americans around the country ringing in the New Year must be disrupted:

“The refusal of grand juries in Ferguson and Staten Island to indict the cops who murdered Michael Brown and Eric Garner made this clear. So the powerful, beautiful and necessary outpourings that have disrupted this society’s normal routine must continue and escalate on New Years Eve and into the New Year.

“But in this society, cops who brutalize and murder are given the benefit of the doubt and are almost never punished in any way for their crimes. This is illegitimate and unacceptable. It must be STOPPED, and it’s up to us to stop it! On New Year’s Eve, we must act in many different ways to do just that.

“Say in a loud, clear voice – NO NEW YEAR UNDER THIS OLD SYSTEM! And – WE CAN’T BREATHE! Bring your whistles and blow them loudly. Bring your signs and banners.” Bring your signs and banners too. Figure out imaginative ways to say NO MORE to all these horrors.”

I have an unimaginative way to say NO MORE: don’t break the law. Don’t teach kids to break the law. Don’t walk in the middle of the street. Don’t assault police officers and attempt to take their guns. Don’t charge police officers. Don’t resist arrest (I still maintain that the officers went over the line with Eric Garner). Don’t be a lifelong criminal. Don’t point guns, even fake ones, at police officers. Don’t dress like a thug. Don’t advocate for the thug life. Don’t steal. Don’t join gangs. Teach your kids to get educated. Understand that Democrats work hard to keep Blacks beholden to the Party with social programs that keep Blacks in poverty.

Of course, facts do not matter to the “protesters”, who are using the incidents to create yet another far left protest movement.

Obama Forgets He Has A Phone, Says He’ll Use His Veto Pen

The voting American public became tired of Congressional Democrats, so they gave Republicans control of the Senate and created an even larger majority in the House. Therefore, even before seeing what legislation the GOP may pass, Obama is already threatening to pull out his veto pen. He’s apparently forgotten that he has a phone (actually, lots of them) with which he can reach out to duly elected Congressional members. But, then, he didn’t do that much with his own Party

(AP) Warning from President Barack Obama to congressional Republicans: I have a veto pen and, come January, I won’t be afraid to use it.

Since taking office in 2009, Obama has only vetoed legislation twice, both in fairly minor circumstances. But with Republicans set to take full control of Congress next year, Obama is losing his last bulwark against a barrage of bills he doesn’t like: the Senate.

“I haven’t used the veto pen very often since I’ve been in office,” Obama said in an NPR interview airing Monday. “Now, I suspect, there are going to be some times where I’ve got to pull that pen out.”

He added: “I’m going to defend gains that we’ve made in health care. I’m going to defend gains that we’ve made on environment and clean air and clean water.”

Other than Obamacare (a law that is still underwater at 56% disapprove 37% approve), most of those so-called gains have come not from actual law making, but executive action. “Gains” that cost jobs as well as raise the cost of living for Americans who do not take 2 week vacations in Hawaii while traveling free on giant jumbo jets with large motorcades on the way to the golf course. That said, it is ensured that the GOP will come after, if not the entire Ocare law in a repeal/replace manner, certain aspects of the law, along with illegal immigration (the GOP may well side with Obama on comprehensive immigration reform) and climate change silliness.

But Obama said he was hopeful that at least on some issues, that won’t be necessary, because there’s overlap between his interests and those of congressional Republicans. On that point, at least, he’s in agreement with incoming Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.

“Bipartisan jobs bills will see the light of day and will make it to the President’s desk, and he’ll have to make decisions about ideology versus creating jobs for the middle class,” McConnell said in response to Obama’s comments. “There’s a lot we can get done together if the president puts his famous pen to use signing bills rather than vetoing legislation his liberal allies don’t like.”

There are hundreds of jobs/economic bills that have languished in the Democrat led Senate after passing in the House, and we can be assured that the GOP will pass quite a few of them. Will Obama veto those?

Potential areas for cooperation include tax reform and global trade deals — both issues where Obama and Republicans see at least partially eye to eye. Conversely, the likeliest points of friction surround Environmental Protection Agency regulations, the Keystone XL pipeline and Obama’s unilateral steps on immigration, which let millions of people in the U.S. illegally avoid deportation and get work permits.

There are many areas of agreement between the two that Congressional Democrats loath, such as the Pacific Rim trade deal.

If the GOP is smart, they will mostly stay away from social issues, and focus on the economy. You can bet the ranch on the GOP passing legislation on Keystone XL in January, sending it right over to Obama’s desk. If Obama vetoes it, he’ll be vetoing a project that is popular with the American People.

Time will tell how it all shakes out. That said, after observing Obama’s time in office for 6 years, as well as knowing his background, he prefers fights and partisan strife to compromise and working together.

Climate Change Will Like Totally Take Center Stage In 2015

Because up to now it’s just been a tiny little issue which almost no one talks about

Climate change will emerge as biggest problem in 2015

Climate change will be taking center stage as 2015 comes rolling around. With 2014 going down as the hottest year on Earth to date, it will become a point of contention for some, regarding the action, or inaction that is taken by those entities who are the biggest producers of carbon dioxide, and other greenhouse gases. Specifically, eyes will be on the United States and China as Chris Field, of Carnegie Institution’s Department of Global Ecology, said, noting that “the big issue in 2015 will be solutions.”

Scientists, governments, and people will be left to make a decision about how they wish to proceed regarding climate change. Either it will be something that is finally taken seriously, with major information being released throughout 2014 – with major real-life examples of the failures we’ve had to date in the climate change arena. That being said, with the meeting in Paris coming up in 2015, that will include the signing of the global climate treaty – countries and people will be forced to make decisions regarding climate change – instead of waiting for more information.

Thing is, most people have been tuning out to the supposed danger of “climate change”, ie, human caused global warming, particularly as they see the utter insanity, scaremongering, and hypocrisy of those who subscribe to the cult of Hotcoldwetdry. They’re tuning out when Warmists say that warming causes cold and snow. And everything. They’re tuning out when they realize that the so-called solutions require massive redistribution of wealth, especially their own. They’re tuning out when they realize that the solutions will cost them in the wallet, especially those who are already dealing with the implementation of the solutions. And they’re tuning out when they realize that this all requires a loss of liberty to centralized government.

The only ones not losing faith are the disciples, as hardcore on the subject as those involved in in cults such as Heaven’s Gate, the Manson family, Jim Jones, the Taliban, the Westboro “Baptist” church, the witch hunts in New England, the Spanish Inquisition.

Anyone else have a link or hotty-fest going on? Let me know so I can add you to the list. (BTW, since someone asked, the reason I leave links for the previous week up (or you might see a *) is because they are place holders for later in the day or for next weeks. Easier than rewriting all the time. Also, the listing order has to do with how they are added over time, not how good a post is. I just copy and paste from the previous week, then edit. If you see one of the *’s, go ahead and check out the blog anyhow, see if there is an update. I cannot update with my Android during the day.
