The West Coast is facing a long-lasting heavy rain event from a bomb cyclone that formed in the northeastern Pacific Ocean Tuesday, and which could lead to significant flooding.

Threat level: The rapidly intensifying storm that is directing a strong atmospheric river at southwestern Oregon and Northern California brought hurricane-force winds to parts of Oregon, Washington and Canada late Tuesday, causing widespread power outages. At least one person has died. (snip to near the end)

Context: Human-caused climate change is causing atmospheric rivers to carry more moisture and making them capable of producing more rain and snow.

  • One 2022 study found that atmospheric rivers that hit California in 2017 were up to 15% wetter due to human-caused climate change.
  • Other recent studies show future atmospheric river events may heighten this trend.
  • Warmer air and ocean temperatures add more water vapor to the atmosphere, which storms can ingest and wring out over land.

But, do we know that this is different from previous Holocene warm periods? How much past data is there? Sorry, sorry, I forgot that cults do not need scientific proof.

Raimondo’s new mission: Leave no cash for Trump

Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo is on an urgent mission: get as much high-tech spending out the door before Donald Trump takes office.

The Biden administration is aiming to commit nearly every unspent dollar in its $50 billion microchip-subsidy program before President-elect Donald Trump takes over in January, an effort that would effectively cement a massive industrial legacy before the GOP can reverse course.

“I’d like to have really almost all of the money obligated by the time we leave,” Raimondo said in an interview with POLITICO. “That’s the goal, and I certainly want to have all the major announcements done as it relates to the big, leading-edge companies.” (snip)

The Chips money alone is a massive undertaking. Congress allocated $50 billion in subsidies for semiconductor manufacturing and R&D. So far only two companies have received binding awards from the Department of Commerce’s manufacturing program. To hit her target, Raimondo still needs to nail down contracts with Intel, Micron, Samsung and SK hynix — multibillion-dollar deals that have, at times, been rocky and required renegotiations.

Raimondo said she recently directed staff to work through the weekend — and even made personal calls to tech CEOs — to speed the talks along.

Perhaps Raimondo should have thought about this beforehand. The CHIPS Act passed on August 9, 2022. What has she been doing since? It took them till February 2023 to listen to proposals. Wasn’t the whole point of the CHIPS Act to get manufacturing up quickly, since there was a big chip shortage worldwide post-COVID? Anyhow, nothing in that Politico piece says why they have to do this quickly Because Trump

Biden locks in $6.6B for TSMC chip factories, ensuring Trump can’t rescind CHIPS Act deal

The Biden administration has finalized a $6.6 billion award for the Taiwan semiconductor giant that is building massive factories in Phoenix, amid concerns President-elect Donald Trump will derail subsidies aimed at fostering the domestic chip industry.

“This is a gigantic announcement,” Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo told reporters on a call ahead of the announcement early Friday, 10 days after Trump’s election.

“This will be one of the most important investments that we make as a country to advance our economic and national security,” she said.

The Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company plans to invest $65 billion on three state-of-the-art fabrication plants, or fabs, that mean thousands of jobs in Arizona.

But

In June, Trump rattled investors when he accused Taiwan of stealing the U.S. chip industry and asserted the U.S. shouldn’t be “giving them billions of dollars to build chips.”

“That CHIPS deal is so bad,” he said Oct. 25 on the Joe Rogan podcast.

He wants the money to go to U.S. companies. But, also remember that Trump tends to rattle on. Rep Mike Johnson also mentioned repealing the CHIPS Act, but, he was quickly shot down, because it is a good thing.

Now, the question is, how many bad deals will Commerce make? Perhaps Raimondo should speak directly to Trump to ascertain his thoughts on this. Will his admin continue to make good deals on this? If so, slow down.

Warmists Have Wonderful New Ideas To Implement Climate Taxes

Rather than give up their own use of fossil fuels and make their own lives carbon neutral, they’d prefer to share the misery of their doomsday cult

These new taxes could help fight climate change

The COP29 climate talks in Azerbaijan aim to agree on an annual finance target of $1 trillion or more a year to help poorer countries respond to global warming. Some see new taxes as one way to get there.

The Global Solidarity Levies Task Force (GSLT), led by France, Barbados and Kenya, is exploring the issue. Below are extracts from its latest report on the options being discussed and estimates about how much could be raised.

Shipping
The levy that could be closest to being agreed is for shipping, responsible for around 3% of global emissions, with governments set to debate a series of measures at a meeting of the International Maritime Organization in April.

Aviation
Aviation accounts for 2% of global emissions yet is usually free of value-added tax (VAT) or sales taxes. Levies being discussed by the GSLT include kerosene fuel, private jet fuel, luxury tickets and frequent flyers, which together could generate $19 billion to $164 billion a year, it estimates.

Well, sure, that won’t cause a spike in costs, right? How about the rest, which are

  • Fossil fuels
  • Financial transactions (why? What do they have to do with ‘climate change’? Oh, right, it’s a cash grab)
  • Carbon (yeah, the continuation of their old carbon tax idea)
  • Wealth (this would be on billionaires. To start with)
  • Crypto
  • Plastic

Strange how it’s always about the money (and the government control), never about practicing what you preach.

Boston Mayor, Arizona Governor Declare They Will Defy Federal Law On Illegal Aliens

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu vows to defy Trump’s mass deportation push: ‘Protect our residents’

Boston’s Democrat Mayor Michelle Wu said in an interview on Sunday that her city won’t cooperate with the looming mass deportation operation from the incoming Trump administration — even as the region sees a number of illegal immigrants with criminal charges released back onto the streets.

Wu was asked in an interview with WCVB about the Trump administration’s plans to launch a mass deportation operation when it takes office in January, and was asked what Boston’s response will be.

“Elections have consequences, and the federal government is responsible for a certain set of actions, and cities, no individual city, can reverse or override some parts of that,” she said. “But what we can do is make sure that we are doing our part to protect our residents in every possible way, that we are not cooperating with those efforts that actually threaten the safety of everyone by causing widespread fear and and having large scale economic impact.”

(Fox News) Arizona’s Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs says the border state, which voted for President-elect Trump in the presidential election this month, will not be aiding the incoming administration with its “misguided” plan to launch a mass deportation operation. (snip)

She then added, “What I will unequivocally say is that, as governor, I will not tolerate efforts that are part of misguided policies that harm our communities, that threaten our communities, that terrorize our communities, and Arizona will not take part in those.”

She said she’ll help on security the border, but, not on detaining illegals. They, and other Democrats who want to impede the federal government, might want to listen to Tom Holman

(Newsweek) The president-elect has vowed to launch the largest mass deportation of undocumented immigrants in history when he reenters the White House next year. Speaking with local news station WCVB’s On the Record on Sunday, Wu said Boston is not “cooperating with those efforts that actually threaten the safety of everyone by causing widespread fear and having a large-scale economic impact.”

“Well, she’s not very smart, I’ll give her that,” Homan said. “President Trump is going to prioritize public safety threats. What mayor or governor doesn’t want public safety threats out of their communities?” (snip)

“So either she [Wu] helps us or she gets the hell out of the way, because we’re going to do it,” Homan said. “There’s a clear line here, and they can’t cross that line. I will suggest she reads Title 8, United States Code 1324 III, which says you can’t harbor or conceal an illegal alien from federal law enforcement officers.”

“They can not cooperate, but there are certain laws in place that they can’t cross, and I hope she doesn’t cross it,” he added.

Why do Democrats want to protect murderers, thieves, rapists, gang members, and terrorists? Those are the first ones the Trump admin plans to go after. And Holman sounds serious about prosecuting people for violating federal law.

Nations Are Seeking Ways To Force Their Citizens To Pay For Climate Beliefs Of Elites

Nations are seeking ways to raise the big money needed to tackle climate change

Just as a simple lever can move heavy objects, rich nations are hoping another kind of leverage — the financial sort — can help them come up with the money that poorer nations need to cope with climate change.

It involves a complex package of grants, loans and private investment, and it’s becoming the major currency at annual United Nations climate talks known as COP29.

But poorer nations worry they’ll get the short end of the lever: not much money and plenty of debt.

Meanwhile, half a world away in Brazil, leaders of the 20 most powerful economies issued a statement that among other things gave support to strong financial aid for climate for poor nations and the use of leverage financial mechanisms. That was cheered by climate analysts and advocates.

Money is the key issue in Baku, where negotiators are working on a new amount of cash for developing nations to transition to clean energy, adapt to climate change and deal with weather disasters. It’ll replace the current goal of $100 billion annually — a goal set in 2009.

Let’s be honest: most of this money never makes it to the citizens of 3rd world shitholes developing nations: it ends up in the pockets of the rich, the politicians, the bureaucrats, and the well connected. Are these dirt poor citizens seeing any of the supposed benefits?

In these negotiations, rich potential donor nations have been reluctant to offer a starting figure to negotiate from. So Rafiyev said the conference presidency is putting the pressure on them, telling “the developed countries that the figure should be fair and ambitious, corresponding to the needs and priorities of the world.”

For all the money that’s been dumped into these developing nations they are still developing. None of it has really helped. Now it’s just money with no strings attached, because successful nations apparently owe these poor countries the money. Pretty nice scam, eh?

Analysts and activists said they were also worried because the G20 statement did not repeat the call for a transition away from fossil fuels, a hard-fought concession at last year’s climate talks.

Most of these 3rd world nations and 2nd world island nations would collapse back further without fossil fuels. Without fossil fuels tourism ends. Without it any exports and imports end. Have fun.

Vulnerable Democrats Who Cozied Up To Trump And Won Give Advice To Party

Vulnerable Democrats who won say party must follow their path

House Democratic front-liners have a message for leadership as the party grapples with what went wrong in this year’s elections: Follow our example.

While Democrats were generally wiped out on Election Day — losing the White House and Senate, and failing to flip control of the House — vulnerable Democrats in the lower chamber were a rare bright spot for the party.

Those lawmakers proved highly successful in keeping their seats in tough battleground districts, even in some places where President-elect Trump won by comfortable margins.

As Democratic leaders conduct an election postmortem, the front-liners are urging colleagues to take a page from their playbook, which features a heavy focus on kitchen-table economics while largely avoiding the culture-war battles that were a drag on the party on Nov. 5.

Oh, most are not going to stay away from the Crazy, especially when they are in utterly safe districts.

For Pappas, that meant an outsized focus on two economic concerns facing working-class families: unaffordable housing and the high cost of child care. Both are pressing problems not only in his district, he said, but all across the country. If Democrats want to appeal to more voters, he argued, they have to focus on the pocket-book anxieties that keep them up at night.

“In my district, abortion rights is still a top-testing issue, and people are deeply concerned about the direction of that,” he said. “But I think overall the economic anxiety needs to be front and center in terms of our agenda.”

Of course, the problem there is that Democrats tend to have the wrong answers on the economy, as we saw with Kamala’s “plan”. The fake price gouging may play well with the moonbat base, but, real people know it’s mule fritters. Real people know that the promise to build millions of homes is BS, considering how few EV chargers the government built and how no homes were connected to the Internet despite billions allocated.

“We hammered affordability just over and over and over — obsessively talked about lowering costs — and I outperformed Harris by 11 points in one of the toughest districts in the country,” [Rep Pat Ryan (D-NY)] continued. “So it’s all nothing new here.”

In other words, he sounded like Trump and Republicans. The question now is, how will he vote? In accordance with his campaign, or with the far left Democrats? How will the rest vote?

Shell Beats Climate Cult In Dutch Appeals Court Case

It’s easier to win when the climate cult finds friendly judges than when a real world court hears the case

Shell wins appeal in Dutch court after three-year battle against green groups

Climate activists won against Shell in 2021 when a Dutch court commanded the oil giant to reduce its carbon emissions by 45 percent by the end of 2030. Three years later, Shell managed to win its appeal against this ruling. In the court’s view, Shell doesn’t have a “social standard of care” to curtail emissions, the BBC reports.

The 2021 ruling was noteworthy, as it was the first time a court made a private company obey the 2015 Paris Agreement in addition to Dutch law. However, the appeals court judge said that while Shell had an obligation to reduce emissions, a 45 percent cut could not be established as there is no universally accepted amount. Shell’s statement says it’s planning to reduce its products’ carbon intensity by a comparatively paltry 15 to 20 percent by 2030 compared to a 2016 baseline.

The 2021 ruling would only be effective in the Netherlands as well. Shell wouldn’t have been legally obligated to follow the lower court’s ruling for its operations outside Dutch territory. Now even that small gain is off the table for now.

The activists, who are largely associated with Milieudefensie (the Dutch branch of Friends of the Earth), issued a statement promising to continue the fight against climate change. “Large polluters are powerful. But united, we as people have the power to change them,” said Donald Pols, Director of Milieudefensie. They’re now trying to take the case to the Supreme Court, but getting a final verdict will likely take years.

Too bad the court didn’t ask the plaintiffs if they have given up their own use of fossil fuels and made their own lives carbon neutral.

Trump Says He’ll Use Military To Deal With Illegals

Trump confirms he will deploy the military for mass deportation plan

Donald Trump confirmed Monday that he plans to declare a national emergency and use the military for the mass deportations of immigrants in the country illegally.

Trump posted “TRUE!!!” in response to conservative activist Tom Fitton, who wrote in his own Truth Social post about the incoming administration’s preparation to use the military for deportation efforts.

As the president-elect plans to begin the process of deporting immigrants in the U.S. illegally in his first 100 days, Trump’s team is working to craft executive orders that can withstand legal challenges from immigration advocates to avoid a defeat like the one his 2017 Muslim ban faced. They are also expected to end a visa-free parole process for immigrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela. But Trump will also face logistical challenges, like expanding the capacity of detention centers and tackling the immigration court backlog.

Homan doubled down on Trump’s deportation plans during a Fox News interview Monday, saying that Trump “is committed to [do] whatever he can to get us the money we need” to carry out their plans.

“We’re going to take handcuffs off ICE, we will do the job and secure the country and protect the American communities and arrest the bad guys first,” Homan said.

Well, good. The Trump admin can take those who would in no way be eligible for for asylum and deport the crap out of them. Murderers, rapists, thieves, criminals, gang members. No need to put them in a detention center, just boot them. Anyone who is causing problems are considered a danger to the U.S. and are not eligible for asylum. Anyone who has previously been deported is not eligible. If they failed to apply within 1 year of being in the U.S. they are ineligible, and the burden of proof and doing the paperwork and such is on the applicant.
