Place Like Detroit Have To Get Ready For Climate Refugees Or Something

Are people really clammoring to move to high tax, high crime Yankee cities?

Cleaning the house before the party: How cities can plan for climate mobility

Across the Great Lakes region, something unexpected is happening. Places long defined by population loss are beginning to see new interest from people seeking safer ground in a changing climate. Cities like Detroit, Cincinnati and Buffalo are discovering that their abundant fresh water, moderate climate risks and rich civic infrastructure could position them as places of real opportunity in the decades ahead.

The question now is whether these cities can harness that opportunity in ways that benefit everyone, including the residents already living there.

Over the past three years, more than 15 million people in the United States have been displaced by climate disasters — more than six times those displaced by the Dust Bowl. Most returned home, but a growing number have not. And tens of millions more people are projected to relocate permanently in the coming decades as rising seas, intensifying storms and extreme heat reshape where Americans can safely live.

How many have been displaced because of the conditions in places like Detroit and Cincinnati?

“This will become one of the biggest equity issues of our time,” said David Lubell, senior climate mobility and cities fellow at ICLEI USA and founder of Welcoming America. “But it’s also one of the biggest opportunities, if we plan for it.”

Oh, so, it’s not really about climate?

Lubell and Beth Gibbons, the first Resiliency Director for Washtenaw County, Michigan, are among a growing network of leaders helping communities get ahead of these shifts by building a field of practice around climate mobility.

Climate mobility refers to how people respond to increasingly hazardous environmental conditions — by staying, moving or relocating. It spans short-term disaster displacement, longer-term migration driven by extreme events such as heat, drought, flooding or sea-level rise and planned community relocation.

Lubell shared a city typology first developed by climate resilience leaders Anna Marandi and Kelly Leilani Main that demonstrates how a variety of places will need to grapple with their own distinct challenges and strengths.

Oh, and there we go, shift taxpayer money to NGOs and climate (scam) companies.

Recipient cities like Atlanta, Memphis and Dallas are already absorbing newcomers while managing their own climate vulnerabilities.

Why are they moving to warm/hot weather cities if the temperatures are getting so bad?

Without proactive planning, Lubell warns, unmanaged growth can lead to climate gentrification, strained services, the displacement of those most vulnerable, and hostility towards newcomers. He points to the Great Migration of Black Americans from the South to the North as both a cautionary tale and a call to action.

There wasn’t an equitable, welcoming infrastructure in place – in fact it was quite the opposite, Lubell said. When you don’t plan for lots of people arriving, it’s the most marginalized who are affected.

It’s about the money.

DOJ Makes It Easier To Deport DACA Kids

It’s not like 241 of the 261 DACA kids detained last year had criminal histories or something

Justice Department makes it easier to deport those with DACA status

The Trump administration is making it easier to deport immigrants protected by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA.

new precedent decision published Friday by the Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA) says being a DACA recipient is not enough reason to provide relief from deportation.

A three-judge panel of appellate immigration judges sided with Department of Homeland Security lawyers who appealed a decision from immigration judge Michael Pleters terminating removal proceedings for Catalina “Xóchitl” Santiago, citing Santiago’s active DACA status. They sent the case back to a different immigration judge for review.

Although the decision does not mean Santiago will be immediately deported, it potentially weakens DACA protections for hundreds of thousands of others.

Well, they are in the U.S. illegally, DACA was never authorized by Congress, there’s no statute that allowed relief for illegal alien kids, and even Obama said it was un-Constitutional before he went and did it anyway

Santiago’s case gained national attention after she was detained by Customs and Border Protection officers while boarding a domestic flight at the El Paso airport in August. She was placed in immigration detention until a federal judge granted her release last October. She has been fighting the threat of deportation in the immigration court system since.

You know what NPR forgets to mention?

(PBS) We did ask DHS about her case. They gave us a statement in which they called her a criminal illegal alien and they also said this in part — quote — “Her criminal history includes charges for trespassing, possession of narcotics and drug paraphernalia. She will remain in ICE custody pending her removal proceedings.”

Those charges invalidate DACA status. All they were asked was to not be criminals.

UK Crackdown On Climate Nuts Could Make Them Even Nuttier

They’re already batguano insane doomsday cultists: can they get worse?

UK crackdown on climate protests may fuel radical action, study finds

A new study suggests that the United Kingdom’s increasingly punitive approach to direct-action climate protests may be producing the opposite outcome, with some activists becoming more determined and, in certain cases, more radical in response to arrests and legal penalties.

Research based on a survey of around 1,300 climate campaigners indicates that measures such as arrests, fines, and prison sentences are not consistently deterring participation.

Instead, they appear to reinforce the willingness of some activists to take part in disruptive demonstrations, including actions like blocking roads or damaging property.

The study, cited by The Guardian, found that punitive responses to nonviolent activism can push individuals further toward radicalization.

So, wait, am I reading that they surveyed the nutters and the nutters said they are going to continue to be nuts?

Rather than focusing solely on legal consequences, the research highlights the importance of how activists emotionally respond to repression. Those who had already faced measures such as arrest, fines, or surveillance reported feeling less fear about engaging in future disruptive actions.

Among activists without direct experience of repression, reactions varied. Individuals who responded with anger or contempt were more likely to continue participating in protests, while those who felt fear tended to step back from further involvement.

Well, looks like the slightly less nuts are going to maybe refrain from being nutbar.

Crazy people.

Liberals Are Freaking Over Trump Refurbishing The Reflecting Pool

Is there anything that won’t cause Peak TDS? I mean, they are losing it

The Washington Post is one of the media outlets losing it

Trump’s changes to Reflecting Pool worry preservationists, locals

President Donald Trump this week unveiled his rapid project to resurface the Lincoln Memorial’s Reflecting Pool, saying that a contractor convinced him to use “American Flag Blue” to cover the pool’s basin. The changes have some historic preservationists feeling blue.

Trump on Thursday walked through his planned renovation of the century-old pool, touting his expertise at building “more than 100 swimming pools” during his real estate career, and saying that he had involved his personal contractors. The project — the most extensive overhaul of the reflecting pool in 15 years — will be completed in time to mark the nation’s 250th anniversary celebration on July 4, the president said.

“Now we have a nice clean surface on which we’re putting an industrial-grade swimming pool topping,” Trump said in a video released by the White House. The president said the new surface would prevent the leaks that have frequently affected the pool for several decades. (snip)

But the pool has long been plagued by leaks, algae and other problems that have forced frequent cleanings and multiple renovation projects. The Obama administration announced its own reconstruction of the pool in April 2009, a process that ultimately took several years and cost $34 million.

The Biden admin was going to spend $300 million on a project that would take years. Trump’s project is costing up to $2 million and will take a few weeks.

Some historic preservationists and other experts warned that Trump’s renovations could distort the experience for visitors. Charles A. Birnbaum, who heads the Cultural Landscape Foundation, an education and advocacy organization, noted that the neutral colors used for the pool’s basin were intended to convey greater depth and reflection that could now be threatened by the president’s changes.

Call the waaambulance

Some lawmakers said Trump’s focus on the reflecting pool shows that he is too fixated on Washington-area renovation projects rather than issues that affect voters. The president has repeatedly invoked his projects, including a black granite path at the White House that he has pushed to complete before King Charles III’s arrival on Monday.

“As Trump gets ready to play host to King Charles III this week, his emphasis on pageantry and decorations instead of our nation’s economic pain is a reminder that he wants to be a king — and why 250 years ago, America decided that we didn’t want one,” Rep. Gabe Amo (D-Rhode Island) wrote in a text message.

A king, you guys! Sigh.

Good Grief: Goracle Says We Could Have Heat Ice Age In 25 Years

This is the same guy who sold his TV station to petro-state backed Al Jazeera for tens of millions, right?

Al Gore Warns ‘The Day After Tomorrow’ Ice Age Could Happen in 25 Years, 10 Years After ‘Inconvenient Truth’ Prophecies Failed

Former Vice President Al Gore is still making climate doom predictions, 20 years after his warnings from An Inconvenient Truth proved false — this time invoking the science fiction film The Day After Tomorrow for a rapt Hollywood audience.

Gore joined the first-ever Sustainability in Entertainment Honors event Thursday, organized by The Hollywood Reporter and the Sustainable Entertainment Alliance, for a keynote conversation with The West Wing star Bradley Whitford. The pair reminisced about the Oscar-winning documentary An Inconvenient Truth, conspicuously omitting its failed prophecy that Earth’s ecosystems would reach a “tipping point” of no return, thanks to human industrial activity, in only ten years. That deadline that came and went a full decade ago.

In the course of the conversation, Gore mentioned that the idea for An Inconvenient Truth came out of his promotion for the 2004 science fiction movie The Day After Tomorrow (throughout the keynote, Gore mixed its title up with the 1983 nuclear war thriller The Day After). The mansion-dwellingprivatejetting climate crusader later invoked the disaster film, saying that the calamity it depicts is “a very real threat within the next 25 years.” (snip)

GORE: That movie that I mentioned, The Day After about the Gulf Stream shutting down, well, this morning in one of the English newspapers is a whole big article summarizing the recent dire warnings of the scientists who found yet more confirmatory information that this is a very real threat within the next 25 years.

They never, ever give up trying to spread their doomsday propaganda.
