Shady Gold Bars Found In Menendez’s Home: When Does GOP Boot Him From Congress?

It’s long been known that Robert Menendez was shady, beyond the norm for a member of Congress. He’s already in serious criminal trouble, and now

Four of the gold bars Sen. Bob Menendez stashed at his home were previously stolen from the businessman accused of bribing the New Jersey Democrat, according to a report.

The serial numbers on some of the gold found by the FBI during a June 2022 raid of Menendez’s Englewood Cliffs, NJ, home match identifiers that Fred Daibes reported to police after a 2013 armed robbery, according to NBC News. (snip)

Menendez, 69, was hit with federal corruption charges in September related to an alleged years-long bribery scheme.

The US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York charged Menendez and his wife, Nadine, 56, with three conspiracy counts in connection with what prosecutors call a “corrupt bribery agreement” that benefited the couple, three New Jersey businessmen – Daibes, Wael Hana and Jose Uribe – and the government of Egypt. (snip)

Menendez has vehemently denied any wrongdoing and has refused to resign from the Senate, despite numerous calls for him to do so, even from fellow Democrats.

OK, he won’t resign: when is the vote held to expel Menendez? The GOP was hot to trot to expel George Santos, who got caught doing shady things (most members of Congress are shady, they just weren’t caught), even though Santos hasn’t been convicted. Where are the calls for Menendez to be booted?

(Miami Herald) During an interview on ”The View” shortly after the House of Representatives’ vote, Sen. John Fetterman, a Pennsylvania Democrat, said he was “not surprised” by Santos’ removal.

“But to me, I think the more important picture is that we have a colleague in the Senate that actually (did) much more sinister and serious kinds of things,” Fetterman said, naming Sen. Bob Menendez, a New Jersey Democrat.

“He needs to go,” Fetterman said. “If you are going to expel Santos, how can you allow somebody like Menendez to remain in the Senate?”

When? It takes two-thirds to boot him under Article 1 Section 5. When does the voted take place?

  1. Professor Hale says:

When? Never. Democrats only vote against Republicans for ethical lapses. They are just fine with corruption and bribery as long as they are the ones doing it.

    • Elwood P. Dowd says:

      Your bias is showing.

A recent study found that of the 1,523 complaints sent to the Senate Ethics Committee since 2007, zero resulted in any formal disciplinary sanctions over 15 years.

Senators Packwood (R-OR), Ensign (R-NV) and Franken (D-MN) resigned after being accused of crimes.

Mitch McConnell (R-KY) was the Senate Majority Leader from 2015-2021.

    • H says:

Apparently Fetterman isn’t fine with it. And the other Dems kicked him off all committees. Sen Ted Stevens GOP AK didn’t get kicked out, neither did Kay Bailey Hutchinson GOP TX. Prof Hale didn’t remember those 2?

  2. Elwood P. Dowd says:

Our Supreme Court gives Congress wide latitude in expelling members.

Judicial Interpretations of the Expulsion Clause The Supreme Court has stated, for example, that Congress’s expulsion power “extends to all cases where the offence is such as in the judgment of the Senate is inconsistent with the trust and duty of a member.” The Court highlighted that a Member’s conduct could be subject to legislative discipline even if “[i]t was not a statutable offence nor was it committed in his official character, nor was it committed during the session of Congress, nor at the seat of government.” The Court has also emphasized that the House and Senate may exercise the expulsion power exclusively, such that any prosecution by the executive of related offenses by the Member do not interfere with Congress’s power to expel. These relatively few statements suggest a broad view of the expulsion power.

Sixty-seven Senators need to vote to expel Senator Menendez. The disciplinary process begins when a resolution to expel a Member is referred to the Select Committee on Ethics (Senate Ethics Committee).A recent study found that of the 1,523 complaints sent to the Senate Ethics Committee since 2007, zero resulted in any formal disciplinary sanctions over 15 years.

When Senator Robert Menendez was indicted on federal corruption charges on September 22, 2023, the shocking details revealed by the allegations seemingly had no end. Wads of cash totaling almost half a million dollars stuffed into clothing pockets and closets. A $60,000 car gifted in the aftermath of a fatal crash caused by Senator Menendez’s wife. And more than $100,000 worth of gold bars, some of which were imprinted with serial numbers traced back to the man alleged to have provided at least some of these gifts in exchange for official acts.

Menendez was justifiably removed from Senate committees, but may feel that resigning is an admission of guilt, so it’s up to the Senate to expel him. Senator Fetterman is right.

Don’t be silly drowningpuppies elwood never moves to punish Democrats he’s a true believer in the party like all true communists. He would rather see the entire Republic collapsed than admit he’s wrong.

MBS typed: never moves to punish Democrats

Menendez should resign and if if he won’t the Senate should expel him. Menendez has already been indicted.

It doesn’t seem that the Florida Fascist understands the meaning of communist.
