UNC Youts Demand Politicians Do Something After Shooting

It’s an interesting dynamic. After the kid went crazy and killed 5 people and wounded a few others in my neighborhood (several were shot/killed on a greenway about 100 yards away from my casa) there were few calls to change the law, because murder is illegal, he mostly used a knife and a hunting rifle, and no law would have stopped this, excepting banning all private ownership of guns. Of course, he could have then gotten one illegally

The anger and frustration on UNC-Chapel Hill’s campus was palpable Wednesday as hundreds of students demanded during a rally that lawmakers address gun violence across North Carolina and the rest of the country.

Holding up a large banner that read, “This is our reality,” students from different groups, including March For Our Lives and Students Demand Action, took turns talking about the fear and panic they and their friends felt on Monday as the entire university went on lockdown while police searched for an armed man.

“In a matter of seconds, we went from taking notes, walking in the quad, being at home, to being forced to run, barricade the doors; there’s nothing normal about returning to school tomorrow,” said Kyle Lumsden, a volunteer with UNC Students Demand Action. “There’s nothing normal about hearing from people, ‘Thoughts and prayers,’ and the continuous idea that we cannot prevent these tragedies.”

None of them were targeted. None of them were hurt, just the professor. We were freaked in our neighborhood for a short time, and it was a much more dangerous situation. We settled down quickly. It’s nice that the big donor financed groups showed up quickly to take advantage of a tragedy though, eh?

“Our entire lives, as a generation, we’ve been told to run, hide and fight,” said David Hogg, a survivor of the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, that claimed 17 lives in 2018.

Yup, he showed up to take advantage of the fear. And really offered no ideas

Democrats in the General Assembly have proposed creating a red flag law and adopting universal background checks. Republicans have touted this year’s elimination of the state’s permit law for buying handguns as a commonsense step to protect gun rights. It was the first bill the new GOP supermajority enacted over a veto from Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper.

Neither of those laws proposed by the Democrats would have stopped this. There are no reports about concern for the shooter. I’m not sure how he got the gun, because, if he is a foreign national, he’s forbidden to purchase/possess a handgun. All the GOP law did was make it so you did not need approval by the Sheriff’s departments in each county, most of whom simply said “sure, fine”, except in Dem run areas, which took up to 2 weeks for approval. Otherwise, you still must get a background check.

But, other than wanting the permit law repealed, they offer no ideas, the same as most of the NC General Assembly members I’ve read. Lots of them saying “do something” but failing to say what laws would have stopped this. And, of course, they never reply when you ask them what their legislative proposals are and how they would have stopped this.

Mr Teach (re Raleigh murder spree by 15 yr old Austin Thompson): After the kid (Thompson) went crazy and killed 5 people and wounded a few others in my neighborhood (several were shot/killed on a greenway about 100 yards away from my casa) there were few calls to change the law, because murder is illegal, he mostly used a knife and a hunting rifle, and no law would have stopped this

The report said he used a handgun and shotgun. Perhaps a law that gun owners have control of their guns? The Mrs and I keep ours in two steel gun safes with keys hidden away. Very hard for a kid to get into.

Years ago in mid Indiana the son of an acquaintance took two handguns (his dad is ex Army) to middle school and shut a classmate and teacher, fortunately both survived. The juvenile shooter is still locked up.

Should I care whether UNC students are scared and traumatized? Their feelings don’t trump my rights. Sorry, not sorry.

The “If it saves even one life.” crowd is always good for some light entertainment. Meanwhile, I wonder how the UNC CH automatons fretting on cue over this “latest wave of gun violence” feel about the contribution their institution made toward the development of SARS-CoV-2. I wonder when that candlelight vigil is scheduled. Yeah, don’t hold your breath.

    If it saves one life!

    Priorities people.
