Actually, the definition no longer matters. When you write the laws, the definition is whatever the law says it is and is fully enforceable. I remember what the anti-gun activism looked like even before there were AR-15 and AK-47 clones. Crying about “Saturday night specials” (inexpensive revolvers) and “cop killer” bullets. We aren’t defending the AR-15 because we think everyone should have one. We defend the AR-15 because we have been having the same conversation with activist groups since the 60’s and it is never enough. No concession on any point will satisfy them. They will always come back for more. Their goal is a European-style society of serfs and aristocrats where they all imagine they are aristocrats and the serfs are disarmed. Disarmed serfs can’t revolt against them. The only thing you need to know is that those same activists never protest that representatives of the state have even better weapons. In a police state, the police have plenty of guns. Disarm the police, then when we see how well that works, everyone else will just stop buying guns as a waste of money.

The differences between an AR-15 style rifle and the M4 rifle are trivial and you know it. It is not “just a scary looking hunting rifle”. You are lethally wrong.
Have you ever shot a .30-06, 7 mm Mag or even a 30-30? Most hunting rifles are NOT the less accurate semi-auto action. Hunting rifles have longer barrels, no pistol grip, no cooling fore-stock and there is rarely a need for rapid fire. Of course, some people hunt with AR-15 style rifles – we hear the pop-pop-pop-pop-pop spray and pray during deer season every year in the Missouri hills – no doubt shooting a running deer. They offer absolutely NO hunting advantage over the .223 hunting version, other than being less accurate.
AR-15 style rifles are NOT just scary looking. They have all the characteristics of an assault rifle lacking only selective full auto. The rifles and high-velocity .223/5.56 mm NATO rounds are designed for killing people. That’s why they are the tool of choice for mass killers.

Even though police officers rarely kill white Christian nationalists at routine traffic stops, you advocate being heavily armed to protect yourself against the police! Fifty or sixty years ago we had hunting 30-30 and .22 rifles and 12 and 20 g shotguns, yet no mass shootings. Hunting rifles are WHATEVER one uses to hunt. There is no limited definition. What you hunt, where you hunt and the laws in your area dictate your weapon and AR’s are fine for hunting thousands of people use them all the time.
