The murderer in Nashville had legally purchased 7 firearms from 5 different gun stores. The murderer’s parents stated she was under a doctor’s care for emotional issues. She sent a suicide declaration to an acquaintance just before the murders.
The police chief of Nashville, John Drake, said there are currently no laws in TN that would allow grabbing guns from a citizen, although a Red Flag law has been proposed.
A security consultant said the actions (hiding in place) of the school and students likely saved dozens. He also described security deficiencies there, including facility doors with large glass areas instead of heavy wood or metal, and unlocked doors with glass in rooms. The murderer shot through the glass doors and walked in. It appears the killer shot a custodian at the door and the school principal in the hallway.
There have been almost 130 mass shootings in the US in 2023, so far, but only 13 were school shootings, barely one per week. So not to worry.

We will never stop all shootings… And no single action will solve the problem.
In no particular order…
I would increase police presence and pay.
I would increase community mental health resources.
If you hear something, say something – and right away.
I would facilitate confiscating firearms from dangerous individuals.
I would ban all arms with semi-auto actions except shotguns.
I would implement laws for keeping firearms safely stored. (I know a family whose 12 yr old son took 2 of his ex-Army dad’s handguns to school and shot a fellow student and a teacher – fortunately the shooter used a .22 and both victims survived).
I would significantly tighten background checks for purchase.
No doubt this killer chose the school because of it was easy to enter. She shot through a locked glass door. All entrances need to fortified. Most mass shooters expect to die.
What would you propose to stop mass shootings (and to reduce homicides in general?

I would as well, but large metropolitan police departments all over the country are undermanned, because they cannot attract enough qualified applicants. Philly is over 500 officers undermanned, and retirements scheduled over the next four years greatly exceed the number of police academy trainees. The anti-cop atmosphere in so many of our larger cities discourages people from wanting to become cops, and when you have a “woke” police commissioner like Danielle Outlaw, no one wants to work for her.
The lovely Miss Outlaw does not have her officers’ backs.
Tennessee has no ‘red flag’ law, but that hardly seems to matter; Colorado and Illinois, which do have such laws, still never stopped mass shooters because nobody ever called on them.
The Fourteenth Amendment allows us to ban previously convicted felons from possessing firearms, but somehow, some way, they always seem to get them.
But the Fourteenth Amend also requires due process of law for depriving any person of life, liberty, or property, and being a “dangerous individual” is not something defined by the law, without them having committed a previous felony. We could expand that to include people who are mentally ill, but, at least as far as the lovely Audrey Hale is concerned, we’ve stopped defining the ‘transgendered’ as mentally ill.
And yes, I would very much be in favor of defining the ‘transgendered’ as mentally ill, because they plainly are, but I also know that that won’t happen anytime soon. Even if that did change, are we going to set up a surveillance state in which every nutcase is monitored?
The reports are that Miss Hale purchased her weapons legally, and passed background checks; she had no prior criminal record. Nor was there any notification that she was seeing a ‘therapist,’ not that would necessarily have stopped her from passing a background check were it on record.
It’s simple . . . and incredibly complex. Our huge murder rate is the result of a culture which allows it. And the solution is teenaged girls.
What’s that you say? We must persuade teenaged girls not to f(ornicate) the bad boys, but have their romantic relationships with the guys who stay in school, who don’t use drugs, and aren’t wannabe gang-bangers. There is no stronger motivation for teenaged and twenty-something males than getting into girls’ pants, and if the girls will only f(ornicate) the responsible guys, more guys will become responsible!
More than that, when girls only f(ornicate) decent guys, the odds that the guys will stay if the girls get knocked up increase. The majority of felons in prison have grown up without a responsible father in their homes.
More, we must stress people going to church, do everything possible to push church membership and church attendance. There is no greater civilizing force in society than Christianity and Judaism. Heck, even Islam is mostly civilizing, once you take out the whacked-out jihadis.
And finally, we must deurbanize. In 2020, there were 1,009 murders in the Keystone State, 499, or 49.45%, of which occurred in Philadelphia. According to the 2020 Census, Pennsylvania’s population was 13,002,700 while Philadelphia’s alone was 1,603,797, just 12.33% of Pennsylvania’s totals.
It got worse in 2021: with 562 homicides in Philly, out of 1027 total for Pennsylvania, 54.72% of all homicides in the Keystone State occurred in Philadelphia. Allegheny County, where Pittsburgh is located, was second, with 123 killings, 11.98% of the state’s total, but only 9.52% of Pennsylvania’s population.
The other 65 counties, with 78.11% of the state’s total population, had 33.30% of total murders. It should also be noted that in comparing 2018 with 2021, the homicide rate for the 65 counties which are not Philadelphia and Allegheny (where Pittsburgh is), barely increased, from 3.38 per 100,000 population, to 3.42, a 1.12% rise, in Philadelphia it jumped from 22.31 to 35.53 per 100,000 population, a 59.21% increase.

For all we know the murderer was sexually abused at the same Presbyterian church/school she had attended. Churches famously are not as safe for children as imagined. A congressperson from TN also advocated Christianity as a solution.

Red States dominate the stats for gun violence, with Alaska being the worst. The death rate from firearms is 7 times greater in Alaska than the safest state, Massachusetts.
Alaska could be considered a special case. The second most violent state, Alabama, has a death rate from firearmss 6 times greater than Massachusetts. Same for OK, LA, MS etc. Blue states like NY, CA, NJ, MA with huge urban areas are many times safer that the worst Red states. Even ultra-violent Illinois is twice as safe from gun violence as OK, LA, MS, AL, MT etc.
Part of the problem is that not all insane is alike. It is not a binary assignment. One thing we see clearly is that if a mother kills her children, she is clearly insane (unless the kids deserve it). Yet juries routinely find such women guilty of criminal violations. Our criminal justice systems needs to make the distinction between “not guilty by reason of insanity”, and “insane but should be punished anyway”. Likewise, you cannot do a mass murder without being insane. You cannot kill random people without being insane.
Psychology and psychiatry are some of the squishy-est of the “sciences”. Very often, they cannot even recognize insane and they certainly cannot treat it. Thus, they are useless as a part of determining public safety. As a profession, they have done a very good job marketing themselves to the point where over half of the women in the USA regularly see a counselor and 1/3 of them are estimated to be taking medications for various mental illnesses. Is ADHD a mental illness? There is a treatment for it. Should men who don’t focus well not have the right to self defense?
My own idea is to stick with what has worked for most of human history. Judge people by their actions, not by their thoughts. Gun control activists believe that when it comes to guns, the state has a right to judge innocent people for the crimes they may someday commit. This is against American law, the Constitution, and common law. If it should become law, then we are looking at reasonable justification for deporting all the Hispanics and sterilizing all the blacks. What do we call those people who advocate genocide, ethnic cleansing, camps, and putting people into boxcars because of their “potential harm”? Seems like there is a word for that.
One thing that would definitely help: News blackout on such events. It would only take a few years before the new crop of crazy people would not have heard of this type of attention seeking and would go back to jumping off buildings and bridges. But out national news media ARE the anti-gun activists and they can’t wait to highlight each of these events.
I’m old enough to remember the glass doors which had wire mesh imbedded in the glass. Shooting out the glass would still not allow access through all of that wire.
The real credit has to go to the Nashville Metropolitan Police, which, notified at 10:13, had the killer down by 10:27. The officers ran toward the fire, rather than considering their actions in place for over an hour in Uvalde, or Scot Peterson, the armed ‘school resource officer’ at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, who earned the epithet the “Coward of Broward” for hiding outside while Nikolas Cruz slaughtered 17 (?) people inside.
Correlation does not suggest causation!
That mass shootings in America (but not in other nations) correlate with the widespread availability of M4 knock-offs to mentally disturbed American men does not prove causation!!

Openly carrying a loaded long gun in Tennessee is illegal, so one could make the case that preemptively killing a stranger carrying an AR-15 is justifiable. There is nothing in the Second Amendment about limiting children or the mentally ill carrying.

Since 2020 the leading cause of death in children and teens is by firearms – homicide, suicide and accidents. While deaths from auto accidents have plummeted over the past few decades, death by guns continue to increase.
Tight regulations on auto safety (mostly opposed by conservatives) have saved the lives of thousands of children.
But there’s nothing to be done about kids dying by firearm.
If the Nashville child killer, with a history being nuts, can legally purchase multiple assault weapons doesn’t that suggest the system needs improvement?
Do these child-slaughtering assault weapons have any other use than killing innocents?

The FDA just approved an over the counter (OTC) NARCAN (naloxone) nasal spray. Naloxone is a opioid receptor antagonist that displaces opioids from the receptor site reversing the effects.
