NY Times Nothing Has Done More For Women In The Workplace Than Unfettered Abortion

Most 1st world nations have some restrictions on abortion. Most do not allow late term abortion except for actual, real medical emergencies. Most are reasonable, it’s barely an issue in most 1st World nations. Here in the U.S., though, the Democratic Party has made abortion their Number One Belief, to the point where they will tell average Dem voters that they cannot be a Democrat if they aren’t sufficiently pious in push abortion with zero restrictions. If they aren’t celebrating abortion. And the will say, and do, anything to protect it, hence this nutty NY Times piece

How Roe Shaped the World of Work for Women
Many factors drove women into the work force in greater numbers in the 1970s. Scholars argue that abortion access was an important one.

When Barbara Schwartz looks back at her younger days working as a Broadway stagehand, she remembers the electricity of it: the harried dancers slipping into their costumes backstage, the props people shoving past with flashlights between their teeth.

She was able to throw herself into that high-pressure career, she said, because of a choice she made in 1976. She got an abortion at a clinic she found in the Yellow Pages. It was three years after the Roe v. Wade ruling established the constitutional right to an abortion; to Ms. Schwartz, the world seemed full of new professional opportunities for women. She got a credit card in her own name, became one of the first women to make it into the local stagehand union and joined the throngs backstage at shows including “Cats” and “Miss Saigon.”

Perhaps she should have a little smarter and responsible with her sexual activities.

To women like Ms. Jelatis, who entered adulthood in the early 1970s, the world of work and opportunity was changing rapidly. Women’s labor force participation went from about 43 percent in 1970 to 57.4 percent in 2019. Many different factors drove women into the work force in greater numbers in those years, but scholars argue that abortion access was an important one.

“There’s no question that legal abortion makes it possible for women in all classes and races to have some control over their economic lives and ability to work outside the home,” said Rosalind Petchesky, a retired professor of political science at Hunter College, whose research was cited in the Supreme Court’s 1992 ruling in the case Planned Parenthood v. Casey, which reaffirmed Roe.

Yes, some unhinged supporters of killing babies do believe so much in abortion on demand that they think it made a difference. And will defend it along these line. And, while it might have played a small part, the important ones are different

(Brookings Institute) Between the 1930s and mid-1970s, women’s participation in the economy continued to rise, with the gains primarily owing to an increase in work among married women. By 1970, 50 percent of single women and 40 percent of married women were participating in the labor force. Several factors contributed to this rise. First, with the advent of mass high school education, graduation rates rose substantially. At the same time, new technologies contributed to an increased demand for clerical workers, and these jobs were increasingly taken on by women. Moreover, because these jobs tended to be cleaner and safer, the stigma attached to work for a married woman diminished. And while there were still marriage bars that forced women out of the labor force, these formal barriers were gradually removed over the period following World War II. (snip)

By the 1970s, a dramatic change in women’s work lives was under way. In the period after World War II, many women had not expected that they would spend as much of their adult lives working as turned out to be the case. By contrast, in the 1970s young women more commonly expected that they would spend a substantial portion of their lives in the labor force, and they prepared for it, increasing their educational attainment and taking courses and college majors that better equipped them for careers as opposed to just jobs.

These changes in attitudes and expectations were supported by other changes under way in society. Workplace protections were enhanced through the passage of the Pregnancy Discrimination Act in 1978 and the recognition of sexual harassment in the workplace. Access to birth control increased, which allowed married couples greater control over the size of their families and young women the ability to delay marriage and to plan children around their educational and work choices. And in 1974, women gained, for the first time, the right to apply for credit in their own name without a male co-signer.

The piece is written by Janet Yellen. Yes, that Janet Yellen. Contraception was certainly a factor in the 70’s

(HuffPost) A big part of this is our own culture, which hasn’t changed very dramatically, according to Norma Carr-Ruffino, an expert on women in management who has taught at San Francisco State University’s College of Business. She has also authored multiple books on women and diversity in the workplace. “The culture is important and it affects corporate culture,” she said. She noted that the change in terms of women’s participation in the workplace began in the 1970s when a single-income household could no longer support a comfortable, middle-class lifestyle.

Those aren’t exactly right wing sources. In fact, most articles I’ve found speak of the same exact things. Women becoming more educated, stretching beyond the typical menial, secretary, and educator type jobs, and needing to work to make ends meet.

Contraception and wise life choices are a good thing. Abortion is not contraception, and should be done simply because people were irresponsible. Taken properly, birth control pills are 99% effective. Show some self control. Yes, yes, I know other bad things happen, but, most cases are simply irresponsible sexual behavior.

  1. Doom and Gloom says:

The democrats will not be nailed down on WHEN abortion should no longer be allowed. As in what week of pregnancy. Ask anyone of them and they simply defer to “it’s the mother’s choice”

The reality for them is that the general public finds that abortion should be illegal or restricted by a 51-48 percent margin by Gallup in a 2021 poll.

48 percent of the populace claim to be pro-choice while 46 percent claim to be pro-life.

Legal with certain restrictions consistently has won out by a vote of 48 to 59 percent the last two decades this poll was taken versus those that claim it should be legal in ALL CIRCUMSTANCES at numbers of 21-32 percent.

Abortion is a complex matter so polling divides abortion into three trimesters.

1st-trimester respondents claim a 60-38 in FAVOR of abortion.

2nd-trimester respondents claim a 65-25 REJECTION of abortion during this term

3rd-trimester respondents claim a 81-13 REJECTION of abortion during this term.

Clearly, this is a subject to which there will never be an overwhelming consensus on either side.

    • Elwood P. Dowd says:

Roe v. Wade (Planned Parenthood v. Casey) affirmed that abortions be available through fetal viability (~ 20-24 weeks gestation). Almost all abortions occur during this time frame and a clear and consistent majority of Americans favor this.

After that time it depends on circumstances.

If a 13 yr old rape/incest victim doesn’t realize she’s pregnant until month 4 would you force her bear the baby?

Or if the fetus is anencephalic and the continued pregnancy would be dangerous to the prospective mother would you force her to bear the baby? What about ectopic pregnancies where a fertilized egg (what pro-birthers refer to as a “baby”) implants outside the endometrium and will not survive (over 100,000 in U.S. each year)?

If you claim that a fertilized ovum is a “baby”, you cannot compromise! You MUST ban all abortions.

  2. Elwood P. Dowd says:

Teach typed: unhinged supporters of killing babies

Anyone killing babies IS unhinged and needs to be tried and locked up forever or until their fellow prisoners rape them to death. Of course, abortion is not the killing of a baby.

Teach typed: Abortion is not contraception, and should be done simply because people were irresponsible. Taken properly, birth control pills are 99% effective. Show some self control.

The idiom, “It takes two to tango”, is apropos. So, if a woman has sex with her husband twice a week for a year (104 times), even though she takes her birth control pills properly, you would expect her to get pregnant in the year. If 100 married women take their birth control pills properly and each have sex one time, you would expect one of them to get pregnant. Maybe the answer is to vasectomize ALL males rather than force women with no intent to get pregnant to give birth. Other options for irresponsible males to share the responsibility is to DNA test every male at puberty to have it on the record and then cross reference it with every baby you force women to birth. That way, the previously irresponsible male can share the financial and social burdens of pregnancy, child birth, and rearing a child for at least 18 years. If you refuse the DNA test, you get vasectomized or castrated. Your choice!! Simple!! Perhaps if males were forced to take some responsibility for where they dump their sperm we would find fewer abortions are needed.

We understand the frustration of connie incels who have never been married and therefore have never had sex with a human being. According to christian conservatives it is immoral to have sex outside of marriage, so christian conservative men who have never been married have never had sex other than with themselves. We wish every American male had the self-control of the christian conservative male! We feel most sorry for divorced christian conservative males, used to getting “some” regularly but are now celibate!

Teach, what does your wife or ex-wife have to say about the whole issue?

The majority of women seeking abortions claim to be christians. Are these irresponsible jezebels/sluts/whores ONLY having sex with irresponsible, non-christian, non-conservative men or are they so tempting that even a responsible, christian conservative male can’t resist their charms?

Teach, we need your input!! Are “contraceptives” that block a fertilized egg (zygote) from implanting in the endometrium actually abortifacients to be banned? How about “morning after” hormone pills? Cu-IUDs? How will you control women obtaining medical abortion pills which already account for half of all abortions? It’s hard to control 150,000,000 women – GOPhers have lots of laws to pass!

  3. Elwood P. Dowd says:

Teach and other pro-birther fanatics/propagandists use the term “unfettered” abortion or “abortion on demand”, ignoring that current law supports “fettered” abortion. Why lie? (that’s rhetorical).

Most abortions (>80%) occur before 13 weeks gestation. Few occur in the 3rd trimester.

If the current crop of SC reactionaries choose to overturn 50 years of precedent, that’s on them, but there will be a fight.

Are you ready to send young women to prison for life?

    • CarolAnn says:

Mr. Dowd said “Most abortions (>80%) occur before 13 weeks gestation. Few occur in the 3rd trimester.”

Then are you and your fellow baby killing radicals willing to COMPROMISE that abortion is legal up to the 13Th week unless medically needed to save the mother since over 80% occur by then and oh so few occur in the 3rd trimester?

“Are you ready to send young women to prison for life?”

No, but there are other things that can be done. Fines, imprisonment for the same term as the longest serving untried Jan6th protester, denial of welfare, and many more if you’re creative. Leftists have no problem penalizing people they disagree with politically. Get them fired, fined, taken to court till they’re broke and lose their homes, jobs etc. We can do that.

Or we could just have them declared domestic terrorists like the lefties do to everyone they hate.

Just remember we can’t force them to wear masks or get vaxxed: their body, their choice.

FJB and the domestic terrorists bombing anti abortion offices and terrorizing Court Justice’, Christians and LIFE supporters. They are anti-democratic and science deniers.

      • Elwood P. Dowd says:

Killing babies is murder and is against the law in every state.

Americans have lived with Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey for several decades. Did you not know the limits on abortion under these rulings? How bizarre…

There IS a right to privacy but no right to attack the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to halt the certification of the duly-elected President. The two issues are not related.

If the right somehow makes abortion “murder”, the only recourse for 1st degree murder is either execution or long prison terms. Do you support executing a young woman for getting an abortion?
