Washington Post Wonders If Trump Economy Is Too Good To Be True

Buckle your seatbelts, Heather Long of the Washington Post is looking for a way to downgrade the Trump economy

Is this economy too good to be true?

The U.S. economy again defied expectations in April, as another month of strong hiring and falling unemployment forced experts to reevaluate just how good the economy can get — and how long the current expansion can last.

Employers added 263,000 new jobs last month, a record 103 straight months of job growth, and the official unemployment rate fell to 3.6 percent, the lowest since 1969, the Labor Department reported Friday.

The latest piece of good news comes accompanied by strong wage growth, hot stock markets and a first-quarter growth report last week that smashed expectations. Equally noteworthy is what economists aren’t seeing: the high levels of inflation that have accompanied previous expansions.

So, things are going pretty well, eh? Sure, there are a few things to work on, but, even with continuing automation, companies are hiring. Businesses are being created. Others are expanding. Gross domestic product is blowing the blase’ Obama GDP away. No one is talking about the massive, historic numbers of people who dropped out of the labor market like under the previous White House resident. We’re even seeing the return of some manufacturing jobs. So, of course

As the economy continues to grow past what many predicted was possible, some analysts and officials are wondering if the current state of the economy is too good to be true — and that experts must be missing warning signs.

Some expressed concerns about rising debt after the Trump administration undertook heavy borrowing to fund tax cuts and additional government spending to boost growth. President Trump is actively pushing for more, including a $2 trillion infrastructure package, additional military spending and extra stimulus from the Federal Reserve.

Funny, we weren’t treated to “concerns” while Obama was getting his massive Stimulus, borrowing from China, doing smaller stimulus after stimulus, adding $9 trillion to the debt, etc. But, the media does this every time the economy is roaring during a Republican presidency.

But few, if any, deny the remarkable overall strength of the U.S. economy.

“ ‘Spectacular’ is the only way to describe this jobs report,” said Sung Won Sohn, an economist at Loyola Marymount University and SS Economics. “It is hard to believe that this 10-year-old recovery keeps pumping out home runs.”

Previous eras of such economic performance ended painfully. The prosperity of the 1960s was followed by runaway inflation in the 1970s; the long expansion of the 1990s burst along with the tech bubble; and the gains of the 2000s ended when a collapsing housing bubble spiraled into a global financial crisis and the worst recession in generations.

“Things are great, doom starts soon!” And they’ll blame it on Trump. It’s like they want doom to happen.

Joe Biden: Calling communist good people.(a bone to the progressives) China is not a threat to US interests.(WHY would he say this?) In 2012 debate Obama made fun of Romney for saying RUSSIA was the US’s main threat. Now the left is homophobic about Russia even going so far as to suggest their actions in our election was an act of WAR.

An investment fund backed by Hunter Biden, son of 2020 presidential candidate Joe Biden, invested in a surveillance system used to spy on Muslims in China, a new report claims.

The former vice president has been facing scrutiny over his son’s business dealings in Ukraine and other countries, with reports focusing on Hunter Biden’s role in the Ukrainian energy company Burisma Holdings.

Perhaps the above is most disturbing. Notice how His family and Hillary Clinton were in bed with the UKRANIANS and OMG Biden’s family is involved in that HORRIBLE ENERGY BUSINESS. See this is why no one takes AGW seriously. Biden will stand up and say AGW is real and we all need to do this or that while at the same time his family is getting filthy rich off of the one thing the AGW people believe to be the cause of all our problems.

The problem is that once again as Biden is no longer the darling of the MSM his real life, thoughts and dealings have become an open book. The MSM is still trying to sort out who they want to back given competing interests. They have a tightrope to walk when the darling of Wall Street(Biden) is in bed with Ukranians and SPYING ON MUSLIMS.

    • Mangoldielocks says:

What goes around comes around. The left and the MSM have been all over TRUMPS KIDS. So now the MSM is all over BIDENS kids. See this is what happens when you start dragging families into politics and make them targets. This is why until Trump arrived and Obama to a lesser degree Families were off limits.

But not now. I hope the rest of these candidates have swell children because the press will go after them too once a particular candidate becomes prominent in polling.

A recent poll showed Biden Out polling Bernie Sanders by 34 points. LOLOLOLOL.

CNN poll. Imagine that. Lets go look at the methodology. I see said the blind man. Almost the entire sample was from adults over 65 years old and Bernies support is among young voters which when these are included Bernie is actually leading or is perhaps a couple points behind Biden.

Again. Further Attempts by CORPORATIST MEDIA to tarnish Progressives and destroy their morale for the upcoming primaries. Anyone who does not think their is a war within the Democratic party and the MSM is seriously mistaken.

Teach typed: “…we weren’t treated to “concerns” while Obama was getting his massive Stimulus, borrowing from China, doing smaller stimulus after stimulus, adding $9 trillion to the debt, etc.”

Of course President Obama inherited a crashed economy and financial system, and we were hemorrhaging millions of jobs, had 10% unemployment… it was called the Great Recession and if you don’t remember, it was in all the papers and you can find hundreds if not thousands of articles and books about it. We NEEDED fiscal and monetary stimulus then. We NEEDED to spend billions on unemployment payments, Medicaid, economic stimulus and even made ill-advised payments to Wall Street. Since the Great Recession, America has had 10 years of steady economic and job growth.

Fast forward to now. Trump is increasing the debt in a time of plenty, adding economic stimulus as the economy continues to gallop. It’s funny how you Con Men complained about the debt as President Obama expanded your Medicaid, paid your unemployment and increased your job opportunities, and cheer tRump as he adds unnecessary trillions to the debt (projected to a trillion a year for years to come!).

National emergencies – e.g., world wars, economic crashes require emergency measures. America ran massive debt to crush the Nazis and Japan – and spent decades paying it down, all the while building the greatest middle class in history. Reagan and Paul Volcker intentionally (and correctly accorded to many) started a recession to successfully squelch inflation. The recession was severe with the highest post-war unemployment rate to date. During the Reagan-Bush terms the national debt nearly tripled, but pulling us out of the early years Reagan Recession. President Clinton pushed through a tax increase and the economy prospered and the debt held steady. Bush 2 pushed through tax cuts and invaded Iraq and the debt ballooned, and he left office amid the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression – but because of the massive Bush debt, we weren’t in a position (nor do Cons understand economics) to give the economy the multi-trillion dollar boost it needed.

Let’s all be relieved the incompetent tRump hasn’t crashed the world’s economy, but of course it comes with the cost of massive new debt. Why not eliminate ALL taxes on the rich and corporations and put ALL our expenses on credit cards?? While not eliminate ALL federal taxes and have the states take care of themselves?

How many mention that the Mocha Messiah was one of the causes of it? How many go into detail of how Zippy was Dodd’s bag boy and racked up the third highest payments in bank money during those years?

We NEEDED to spend billions on unemployment payments, Medicaid, economic stimulus and even made ill-advised payments to Wall Street.

Yeah, it sure worked for Franklin Roosevelt, right?

What worked for Franklin Roosevelt was Pearl Harbor. Unemployment was still double digits even with a peacetime draft.

And we’re spending trillions because we got stuck with IdiotCare. Still have to kill that.

understand economics) to give the economy the multi-trillion dollar boost it needed.

Most of which went into politicians’ pockets. Socialism has yet to work anywhere, so it’s you that doesn’t get economics. Trump put money back into people’s pockets. That’s what got the economy going.

Why not eliminate ALL taxes on the rich and corporations and put ALL our expenses on credit cards?? While not eliminate ALL federal taxes and have the states take care of themselves?

Sounds good to me. There are several Constitutional responsibilities mandated to the Federal government, but, Hell, yeah, send all the illegals and Moselms home and privatize Social Security.

But then the Demos and Commies would be out of business and we couldn’t have that.
Let’s all be relieved the incompetent tRump hasn’t crashed the world’s economy, but of course it comes with the cost of massive new debt.

    • Elwood P. Dowd says:

      oops… you accidently cited a conservablog…

With this economy tRump should waltz to re-election!

Yet, the buffoon brags about chatting up Putin, squelching the good news about the economy.

He could “pivot” to being President to all Americans but he can’t help himself. He seeks the love and adulation of his fervent base.

      • Mangoldielocks says:

What would you have him do that would satisfy you as being president of all the people?

        • Elwood P. Dowd says:

He could start by not calling the media “The enemy of the people.”

Maybe stop giving applause to neoNazis.

          Stop lying.

          Stop obstructing justice.

          Stop demonizing Muslims and Hispanics.

You know, show just a little human decency.

But he’s a sociopath so has no human decency.

The day when Tina Brown is smarter than Jeffery came a lot faster than I thought.

Laying down for Russia and China is not a good thing.

tRump is a moron. All he had to do was not blow Putin for a while and absorb the positive vibes of economic good news. But no. He needed the applause from his right wingers by rubbing decent Americans nose in his continued bizarre relationship with Vlad.

      • Jl says:

So in other words, what’s said in the Powerline article is true. Thanks

Note the employment trends. The unemployment rate continues to drop from the economic expansion started in 2010. Kudos to President Obama and Mr. tRump (who has yet to bugger the expansion).

We have had steady job growth since 2010. tRump’s unnecessary fiscal stimulus was a boost, too, and is adding a trillion a year to the debt (until the “tax cuts reduce deficits” thing kicks in). It’s never happened, but who knows, this time might be different!!

the economic expansion started in 2010.

You mean Recovery Summer? The same he tried to have for 5 years? You really should go into stand-up.

We have had steady job growth since 2010.

Only because Zippy didn’t count a lot of people. Job force participation was lousy ’10 – ’17. IOW anything good Jeffery notes always relies on cooked books – climate, health, economy, law…

tRump’s unnecessary fiscal stimulus was a boost, too

Zippy’s unnecessary fiscal stimulus was a boost, too.

FIFY. Ah, yes, the stimulus that gave us all those roundabouts nobody wanted or needed.

    • Liljeffyatemypuppy says:

Notably there isn’t a single economic policy Obama supporters can identify that resulted in strengthening the economy. https://www.thepiratescove.us/wp-content/plugins/wp-monalisa/icons/wpml_cool.gif

      • Kye says:

Not even Cash 4 Klunkers? How about Obamaphones? I know damn well drug dealers in the ghetto were trading Obamaphones like crazy. They made a fortune. So at least Osama Bin Obama helped drug dealers. Oh, and Fast & Furious! Nah, that wasn’t an economic policy that was an attempt to have our Second Amendment Rights negated. The deaths and murders he caused were “collateral damage”. I’m still sitting here waiting for my $2500 lower insurance rate. And waiting….and waiting. He is a grifter and a liar. And that’s how history will see him.

Elwood’s insistence that Soetoro began some sort of “recovery” is laughable considering it was he who said 2% growth “was the new normal”. You cannot convince a religious fanatic he is wrong so leave poor Elwood alone.

        • Elwood P. Dowd says:

          Kye,

The data don’t lie, but Cons do. Trump is enjoying the tail end of a ten year recovery. Why was Clinton’s economic performance so much better than tRump’s? Monster GDP growth after tax INCREASES. tRump recently promised 4, 5, 6% growth but has been mired between 2 and 3%.

What do you make of the huge unsold inventories last quarter that added about 1% to GDP? I know! Scary.

          https://www.statista.com/statistics/188165/annual-gdp-growth-of-the-united-states-since-1990/

And kudos to tRump for not screwing it up yet.

Do you remember the Great Recession?? The fear that the entire world financial system would collapse? I didn’t think so.

tRump hasn’t had to face any troubles yet, except his being ridiculed for his embarrassing submissiveness to Putin, Kim and bin Salman. All part of his 40% approval.

          • Liljeffyatemypuppy says:

Notably still no answer identifying any Obama economic policy that strengthened the U.S. economy. But that is to be expected from an ignorant Obama supporter. https://www.thepiratescove.us/wp-content/plugins/wp-monalisa/icons/wpml_cool.gif

          • Dana says:

When did President Trump promise “4, 5, 6% growth”? He promised growth over 3%, which was achieved during the first quarter, on an annualized basis, and I remember some promises of 3.5%, even 4%, but not a single word about 5 or 6%.

“tRump will not be president at the end of 2019. Believe me. Mark my word. You tRumpitistas are whistling past the graveyard, and we all understand why. Your hero has committed felonies.” — Jethro Bodine, January 5, 2019.

The data do lie when the Lefties present it. Willie was riding the Reagan economy. And tax increases retard (and you should know retarded) growth. Just ask the IRS.

BTW, Willie claimed it was his stimulus; y’know, midnight basketball. The market had a correction, they always do, and then bounced right back.

I’d say you give new dimension to stupid, but we all know you’re lying.

What do you make of the huge unsold inventories last quarter that added about 1% to GDP?

We’re still growuing, but 3+ growth is pretty damned good. Zippy never managed better than 1 and told everybody it was the new normal.

            New didn’t last very long.

statista’s just another Lefty shill lying through its teeth.

Ask them to show job force participation. Ask them to show how many jobs in the economy at the time.

Miniscule compared to 3.2 unemployment with more jobs than people to fill them.

tRump hasn’t had to face any troubles yet, except his being ridiculed for his embarrassing submissiveness to Putin, Kim and bin Salman. All part of his 40% approval.

So Kim is in his box, Poot is in his, you lost – again, and Trump is over 50%.

tRump’s “stimulus” was a giant tax cut for himself, his family, his corporations and his friends. Now he’s proposing you schmucks pay for an infrastructure program that he’ll pay his cronies to construct!! Brilliant!! His fellow grifters love him! Poor guys giving money to rich guys! The GOPher way!

      • Kye says:

Trump’s “stimulus” as you so stupidly call it began when he donated his entire presidential salary of $400,000 to charity. What have you done lately for all those people you “supposedly” care about? Or did you just take and cash your government checks and bitch about Republicans on line like the troll you are?

        • Elwood P. Dowd says:

          Kye,

Each weekend tRump spends at Mar a Lago costs us taxpayers $3.4 MILLION. Some $70 MILLION a year. So his $0.4 million is a drop in the bucket. I’d rather he take the check and skip the trips.

He “donates” the salary to government agencies, troll.

Actually, Heather Long is one of the most objective reporters on the staff of The Washington Post. I’ve followed her work since 2016, when she was an economics reporter for CNN, and I could not tell you, from her work, whether she is a Democrat or a Republican.

She also published, the same day, U.S. unemployment fell to 3.6 percent, lowest since 1969: The economy added a strong 263,000 jobs in April. Her articles are normally quite fair, presenting both sides of any political questions that arise on the subject.

The most that I could say about her politics is that she did spend some time on the “Defiant Girl” statue on Wall Street, and has indicated a lot of support for more women in positions of power in economics.

It’s okay Dana. I like Jimmy Dore even though he is a batshit left progressive. His shows are actually educational once you understand the perspective they are coming from.

Tim Pool another YouTubers is very good. He is a moderate who leans left but spends most of his time trashing Democrats because in his eyes. THEY ARE WRONG. Yet when he discusses his own personal beliefs I disagree with most of his views however he is committed to facts and not spreading his own personal view on the internet because as he said their are a billion people doing that already.

If you watch the daytime line up at Fox they have now become mostly leftist’s. Why? Because Fox put Shep Smith in charge of the news at fox many years ago after Katrina in which he railed against Bush for not being able to get floaty boats to New Orleans in a timely manner. I mean the storm was still raging and Shep was going insane for hours on his coverage.

So now that he has done the hiring and firing for the last decade Fox news is a leftist organization with the exception of their prime time line up. I will give them credit though they do try to bring a more centrist opinion than anyone else with the exception of CBS night time news which has drastically altered its news since the outing of Dan Rather. They now are the one news outlet that did not spend inordinate amounts of time BASHING TRUMP…even though they did report on Trump they actually present both sides most of the time. My wife has become a Jeff Glor Fan.
