Bummer: “Limited Progress Seen Even as More Nations Step Up on Climate”

Would you be shocked that the Cult Of Climastrology wants even more? So says the NY Times, which provided the headline. Without the “bummer”, of course

The pledges that countries are making to battle climate change would still allow the world to heat up by more than 6 degrees Fahrenheit, a new analysis shows, a level that scientists say is likely to produce catastrophes ranging from food shortages to widespread extinctions of plant and animal life.

Yet, in the world of global climate politics, that counts as progress.

Nothing says progress like massive government regulations and restrictions which do nothing. Well, nothing according to computer models this mularky is based on.

The planet has already warmed by about 1.5 degrees Fahrenheit above the temperature that prevailed before the Industrial Revolution, representing an enormous addition of heat. Virtually every piece of land ice on Earth is melting, the sea ice in the Arctic is collapsing, droughts and other weather extremes are intensifying, and the global food system has shown signs of instability.

First, it’s just 1.5F over a period of 160 some odd years. The temperature is not going to suddenly explode.

Second, not every bit of ice is melting. Many glaciers are growing. Only certain portions of the Antarctic are melting, and real science is showing it’s more due to volcanic activity than any warming. The Arctic is much stronger than it was years ago. Same with Greenland. And, anyhow, none of that would prove anthropogenic causation. Just a low level Holocene warm period.

Third, even the UN IPCC refuses to dive into the extreme weather meme, which science shows is just a fantasy talking point. Remember when tornadoes and hurricanes were supposed to get worse? How’s that working out?

At a meeting in Cancun, Mexico, in 2010, climate negotiators from nearly 200 countries agreed that they would try to limit the warming to 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit, or 2 degrees Celsius, above the preindustrial temperature, a level that would require that emissions from fossil fuels largely cease within a few decades.

Wait, I thought Warmists said they weren’t calling for an end to Everyone Else using fossil fuels?

Bruising fights are still expected at the Paris conference, especially over money. Poor countries that have had little to do with causing global warming, but are likely to suffer the worst effects, are demanding billions from rich countries to help them manage.

As they say, whenever the question includes “why?”, the answer is “money”.

    The Teach typed:

First, it’s just 1.5F over a period of 160 some odd years. The temperature is not going to suddenly explode.

We’re seeing climate changes with the (what you call) “miniscule” change of 1.5F. How do you know the temperature is not going to suddenly explode? How do you know it won’t increase another 1.5F over the next 100 years, and another 1.5F over the following 100 years? Or even more?

Second, not every bit of ice is melting.

No one is claiming that “every bit of ice is melting”.

    Many glaciers are growing.

    And even more are shrinking.

Only certain portions of the Antarctic are melting, and real science is showing it’s more due to volcanic activity than any warming.

The Antarctic ice sheet is losing ice. The Antarctic sea ice is gaining a bit. Stop misinforming your hapless readers. A few of them probably trust you.

The Arctic is much stronger than it was years ago.

We assume you mean there is more sea ice than in 2012 (a record low). And there’s less now than in 2013. And much less now than in 1980. Or 1990. Or 2000. The extent of Arctic sea ice ebbs and flows with the seasons. More in winter, less in summer. And with each passing summer the trend is clear – we’re losing Arctic sea ice. Stop misinforming your hapless legion.

    Same with Greenland.

We assume you mean the Greenland ice sheet has more ice now “than it (had) years ago”. You might need to prove that claim.

And, anyhow, none of that would prove anthropogenic causation.

One never proves a scientific theory, but as the evidence accumulates, piles up, buries, and overwhelms the objections, a scientific consensus forms. The Earth is warming from greenhouse gases we’re adding to the atmosphere. There is no evidence that would ever convince you or your ilk otherwise.

Just a low level Holocene warm period.

It IS a Holocene warm period. And it’s rapidly increasing the global temperature into unknown (by humans and our civilization) territory.

Well, Jeffrey, if what promises have been made are actually kept — and remember how well countries kept the Kyoto Accords? — the good people at The New York Times say we will still see a large rise in average global temperature.

The obvious question is: why waste money and make people poorer if spending all of that money won’t change anything?

  3. drowningpuppies says:

And the big question is, assuming all your speculative assumptions that atmospheric “warming ” is actually caused by man and not within the bounds of natural variability, what are you going to do about it?

  4. Jeffery says:

You poor, sad little man (Teach)…

    you typed:

Wait, I thought Warmists said they weren’t calling for an end to Everyone Else using fossil fuels?

Climate realists are calling for the gradual transition from fossil fuels – yes, “largely over a few decades” is gradual. Why must you lie? Oh, conservatives lie. That’s right.

And only in your fevered, lying conservative mind is anyone calling for Everyone Else to stop. The transition would affect all. But conservatives just got to lie.

I reckon you lie because the truth doesn’t support your ideology.

  5. Jeffery says:

what are you going to do about it?

    1. Keep correcting conservative lies.

    2. Vote, donate to, and work for politicians who support solving problems, especially around global warming.

    3. Keep living my simple lifestyle.

  6. Jeffery says:

The obvious question is: why waste money and make people poorer if spending all of that money won’t change anything?

The obvious question is why do you lie? Isn’t a 4F increase better than a 6F or 8F increase? And in fact, every economist extant will tell you that money invested in slowing climate change is not a cost but an investment. There is no evidence that investments will “make people poorer” (except fossil fuel industry investors – but there’s time to get out of them).

  7. jl says:

“There is no evidence that investments will make people poorer.” Raising the price of energy certainly will make some people “poorer” Speaking of that, there’s no evidence human cause C02 is raising temperatures, either. Except in climate astrologer’s heads. “And it’s rapidly increasing the global temperature.. ” Here we go again, with J’s desperate attempt at hyperbole. Rapidly compared to what, J? Simple question. Problem is, you can’t answer it, because there are no comparable records. “More sea ice than in 2012, a record low.” How long has the record been, J.? Of course it’s been lower before, so this means nothing. The climate circus continues.

  8. drowningpuppies says:

    1. Keep correcting conservative lies.

    By promoting leftist lies?
    Got it.
