Latest Warmist Freakout: Hotcoldwetdry Slowing Gulf Stream

We’re doomed or something

Global warming is now slowing down the circulation of the oceans — with potentially dire consequences

…this week brings news of another potential mega-scale perturbation. According to a new study just out in Nature Climate Change by Stefan Rahmstorf of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research and a group of co-authors, we’re now seeing a slowdown of the great ocean circulation that, among other planetary roles, helps to partly drive the Gulf Stream off the U.S. east coast. The consequences could be dire – including significant extra sea level rise for coastal cities like New York and Boston.

There’s no point in reading the rest of the article, it’s exactly as doomy as you’d expect. Oh, and exactly as wrong as you’d expect, with Cult member Chris Mooney refusing to actually investigate the claim

(Breitbart) But the paper, whose co-authors include one Michael E Mann, appears to be contradicted by real-world evidence which shows nothing of the kind.

Here is what the leading expert in the field, H Thomas Rossby, a professor at the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography said in 2014 about the Gulf Stream, which he has been measuring for the last 20 years.

“We find absolutely no evidence that suggests that the Gulf Stream is slowing down.”

Oops. Anthony Watts dives deep into the paper and notes (along with all the science)

Of course, Rahmstorf and Mann don’t list Rossby’s study in their references, nor seem to use the “highly accurate” ADCP data. Instead they use a model along with [proxies, reconstructions, and] the highly interpolated GISS data to come to the conclusions they want. So, it isn’t surprising they are chasing phantoms in their study. They claim (in Figure 1 from their paper) that this cold spot south of Greenland is caused by meltwater from Greenland and it is evidence of a slowed circulation:

This is the Cult of Climastrology at its best: fear mongering with anything but real data. Computer models, proxies, invented data, etc are the be all say all. If the thermometer says 65 and their models say 72, they’ll go with 72. This is all about politics, particularly the politics of fear. “Science” is a means to that fear. And it very much begs the question that should be on everyone’s minds, including CoC members: why do they lie to us like this?

Global warming caused a slow leak in one of my tires this week. Global warming is so annoying.

  2. Kevin says:

Although there is an upside to global warming. For example, “Sorry I’m late for work today boss. You know… global warming.”

He’ll just have to nod and agree, or else he’s a DENIER!!!

  3. John says:

Roses by is rather well know to believe that climate change is real
A quick scan of the article that includes Mann as one author doesn’t seem to mention speed instead it. Says weakening
    Roses by doesn’t address that

  4. jl says:

Go to WUWT from yesterday to see the total de-bunking of this “study”, and another nail in the coffin the credibility of fraud M. Mann

  5. Jeffery says:

Something struck a nerve with the deniosphere! WUWT is having a freakout over the Rahmstorf paper. Three, count ’em, three supposed takedowns of the paper in one day.

We can un-debunk this way. The Rahmstorf paper found cooling in the north Atlantic between 1970 to 1990. His figure 5 even shows warming starting around 1990. Rossby’s measurements started in 1992. 1992 is AFTER 1990. In addition, the groups were measuring DIFFERENT things.

Rossby’s data is not inconsistent with the findings of Rahmstorf and OMG MICHAEL MANN (WHY ISN’T HE IN PRISON???) et al.

Said Dr. Rossby in his paper:

In more recent years, as knowledge of ocean dynamics and modeling skills have improved, it is more widely thought that the MOC might weaken to some degree, but neither shut down nor increase in strength [Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Fourth Assessment Report, 2007; Yin et al., 2009]. While comforting, considerable uncertainty remains, especially given indications of increased ice melt on Greenland [e.g., Jungclaus et al., 2006], hence the need for continued and improved observation and further research [e.g., Srokosz et al., 2012].

The former TV weatherman, Tony Watts is misleading you. Even his best evidence used to “debunk” Rahmstorf et al (2015) doesn’t. It appears that Dr. Rossby is concerned about the effects of the Greenland ice melt on the convection, saying: “… considerable uncertainty remains, especially given indications of increased ice melt on Greenland…”

And did you hear what that scoundrel Michael Mann had to say about Rossby??

Tom (Rossby) incidentally is the son of the great meteorologist Carl-Gustaf Rossby of “Rossby wave” fame… He also happens to be a friend. He is one of leading physical oceanographers of our time. His scientific work is extremely thoughtful, careful, and solid.

Then he goes on to point out how Dr. Rossby’s paper and the Rahmstorf paper are not contradictory in the least, concluding: “…bad faith efforts to confuse the public by erroneously conflating two very different findings has no place in the public discourse over the science and its implications.” Professor Mann aimed that at deniers.
