Latest Excuse For Warming Pause: “Lousy Data”

We’ve seen quite a few excuses run up the flagpole by Warmists attempting to explain away the almost 18 year pause in rising temperatures. In April the UK Guardian was a leader in trotting out #11, that surface temperatures do not matter. Now they position #12, which is just enough different from the seas ate it and surface temps do not matter to ear its own spot

Apparent pause in global warming blamed on ‘lousy’ data

A widely reported “pause” in global warming may be an artefact of scientists looking at the wrong data, says a climate scientist at the European Space Agency.

Global average sea surface temperatures rose rapidly from the 1970s but have been relatively flat for the past 15 years. This has prompted speculation from some quarters that global warming has stalled.

Now, Stephen Briggs from the European Space Agency’s Directorate of Earth Observation says that sea surface temperature data is the worst indicator of global climate that can be used, describing it as “lousy”. (snip)

Since 1993, satellites have measured sea levels rising by an average of 3mm per year. Unlike the surface temperature, this rise continued throughout the supposed pause in global warming.

Christopher Merchant at the University of Reading has been working to understand why the increase in the stored energy has not translated into an increase in sea surface temperature.

Basically, they note, using other words, that the computer models stink like dead skunk in a public outhouse, and that they really just don’t have the correct data. Funny part is, these same people will proclaim doom and gloom and 97% consensus and that the science is settled. Eric Worrall notes

Thankfully however, climate scientists have not yet run out of metrics which show an upward trend. The new measure of global warming is to be sea level rise – presumably because it is still moving in the right direction, and because it ties in nicely with the “deep ocean heating” narrative.

The inconvenient fact that sea level was around 6 metres higher during the Eemian Interglacial, and around 2 metres higher during the Holocene Optimum, 5500 years ago, was not mentioned in the Guardian article.

No worries, the excuses will keep coming, especially those as to why Warmists refuse to modify their own behaviors to conform to their “climate change” beliefs.

Just so you won’t be confused, the Earth’s surface and oceans are still warming. Sea level is increasing despite the recent Denier meme that the ground is sinking.

Teach, since you are a science Denier, there’s little you have to say that can be believed.

  2. Bill Butler says:

The reason that the phrase “Global Warming Deniers” is used is that the “Deniers” ignore demonstrable evidence, and fabricate stories and “facts” that are not true.

For example, the assertion that there has been an
“almost 18 year pause in rising temperatures”
    is NOT true.

Despite the fantasies of Global Warming Deniers, the earth continues to warm at the rate of 4 Hiroshima atomic bombs per second – running 24/7 – including the years from 1998 to present.

2005 was warmer than any previous year. Then 2010 broke the 2005 record. Data at:

Sea level continues to rise due to thermal expansion and glacial melting. The rate of sea level rise has quadrupled since the 1870 to 1924 period.

Ocean heating has accelerated sharply since 1998. (Note: Over 90% of Global Warming ends up heating the oceans.)

  3. Yet none of that proves anthropogenic causation. Strange, eh?

  4. Jeffery says:

Teach: What evidence would you accept proving that human-generated CO2 is causing the warming that you deny is occurring? The Deniers deny thermometers, which is a 500 year old technology! For godsakes man, what evidence would you ever accept??

Before long when you’re the last Denier denying the CO2 link, you’ll claim we’ve waited too long to act, or the CO2 induced warming is good for us.

In fact, all the data and evidence listed supports the theory of AGW. It is proven, that is, it’s a fact, that CO2 in the atmosphere absorbs infrared radiation. This heats the atmosphere more than if the CO2 wasn’t there. It’s called the greenhouse effect and only unhinged flat-Earth, moon of cheese, cementheads question it.

You claim we don’t know what is causing the Earth to warm now (alternatively you deny that it is warming). We do know. You just don’t like the answer for reasons you refuse to share.

  5. Better_Be_Gumballs says:

Woot.. Teach has gained another CAGW Troll. Congrats Teach. You know how to bring them in.

I love how they used GSS temps to push their meme, and now that it doesn’t show what they expect, they denounce it.

Yet, planting their flag anew on SLR just wont fly either because everyone knows SLR is very susceptible to local ground perturbations.

  6. david7134 says:

    Bill,
All of your reports are biased as they receive money for their opinions. Provide neutral observers and you would have more impact. As I have said, this is the exact same thing they did 50 years ago to tell us that cholesterol and fatty diets caused illness. Check the latest Time to see the distortion of data and lies that resulted in 50 years down the wrong road to trying to stop heart disease.

  7. john says:

Teach that same old (?) graph you show seems to indicate taht 2012 was COL
But NOAA says that it was the 8th or 9th HOTTEST year EVAH ??
Do you think that the “Lord” Monckton may be trying to mislead us ?
Monckton got a ceaqse and desist order to stop saying he was Lord

  8. john says:

Where has all that polar ice cap gone?

  9. john says:

Yes Teach sea levels have changed drastically over the billions of years BUT you see the inconvenient truth is that when/if they change now it will prove somewhat more than “inconvenient” to millions of humans, although probably not so much for you
This “inconvenience” is one reason why the last 2 Popes have spoken out on the subject

  10. Better_Be_Gumballs says:

Where has all that polar ice cap gone?

and yet, you’re still all wrong. go figure.
    john = wrong.
