TLF: What’s Happened In Iraq?

It is getting really tough to find stories about Iraq in the MSM as of late. Apparently, they cannot find enough bad news, and they have chilled out on the good news, apparently not wanting to further harm their need for everyone to believe that Vietraq is lost. But, hey, if they actually did want some good news, why not hear it straight from the soldiers mouth, such as U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Brian S. Orban?

The city of Diwaniyah belongs to the people once again – a city where people walk the streets at night without fear or intimidation; a city where children go to the parks to play.  It’s a city without “them” – the militants, terrorists, criminals and thugs that surrounded the city and its citizens in a cloak of fear.

Over the past several weeks, 8th Iraqi Army Soldiers joined forces with Iraqi Special Operations Forces, Iraqi Emergency Response Units (ERU) and Iraqi Police to rid the city of these “bad men,” a common term used to describe those militants and criminals. The joining of forces was part of Operation Lion Pounce – a series of ongoing operations in and around Diwaniyah to disrupt, isolate and neutralize militant, insurgent and criminal organizations.

Operation Lion Pounce sought “to get the city back to the way it was before – a city that was quiet and peaceful,” said Col. Hasan Abbas Tofan Sultan Al-Fatlawi, 8th Iraqi Army chief of staff.

Notice the part about Iraq soldiers joining forces. They were joined by US Special Forces, but seemed to have done a pretty good job all by their lonesome, which is what we are attempting to get to happen. Sounds like Diwaniyah, along with so many other cities in Iraq, are much safer then our capital city.

Now, I am not a big poll guy: it is hard for me to believe that polling around a thousand people to represent the whole country gives an adequate response. But, let’s look at one

The poll showed a nearly even division over whether President Bush‘s troop increase this year has helped stabilize the country, with 50 percent saying no and 47 percent yes. Just three months ago, only 36 percent said yes.

By 52 percent to 41 percent, most said the U.S. is making progress in Iraq. When AP-Ipsos last asked that question in September 2006 — a time when vicious sectarian attacks resembled a civil war — just 39 percent saw improvements under way.

While far greater proportions of Republicans than Democrats think progress is being made, even growing numbers of Democrats agree. The portion of Democrats saying the troop increase has helped stabilize the country has nearly doubled since September to 26 percent, and the number saying the U.S. is making progress has shown similar growth.

Basically, this shows, within the polled people, that the Democrat and MSM meme’s that Iraq is lost, everything sucks, and we need to cut and run, are being offset by the reality of what is happening in Iraq.

Update: As Operation Iraqi Freedom news go good, network coverage decreases. See The Jawa Report.
