Pakistani Cleric Wants Minister Fired For Hug

Such a tolerant religion

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) – The chief of a radical mosque in the Pakistani capital has issued a decree calling on the government to sack a woman minister after a photograph was published showing her hugging a foreign man.

The demand, contained in a decree known as a fatwa, is the latest challenge from the pro-Taliban mosque to the government of President Pervez Musharraf.

Pakistani newspapers carried a photograph last week showing Minister of Tourism Nilofar Bakhtiar hugging a man, apparently her para-jumping instructor, after completing a jump in France.

Newspapers said she did the para-jump to raise money for victims of an earthquake that killed 73,000 people in Pakistan in October 2005.

Abdul Aziz, chief cleric at Islamabad's Lal Masjid, or Red Mosque, said on Monday she should be sacked.

"Her act was un-Islamic and against our social norms. She earned a bad name for Islam. She should be punished," Aziz told Reuters.

Where are the world wide leftist women's group in decrying this type of speech (and behavior,) which relegates women to second class citizens? I must have missed it, just as I have missed them slamming Islam for the way they treat women over the past 6 years.

Of course, none of them slammed Pelosi for wear those head scarves either. As Scott Ott wrote in his story about Pelosi's visit to Syria

Mr. Bush, in a brief statement, said he’s “glad that relations with the Speaker would soon be headed in the right direction,” adding that the meeting with Mr. Mohammad will give Rep. Pelosi “an opportunity to wear some of the lovely scarves she bought at the mosque gift shop in Damascus, demonstrating her willing submission to a male-dominated culture.”

Meanwhile, more about the religion of peace

Such calls are not to be taken lightly. In February, a Muslim zealot shot dead a woman minister of the government of Punjab province because he thought women should not be in politics. The gunman was sentenced to death last month.

Last Friday, Aziz announced the setting up of a Taliban-style vigilante Islamic court and vowed suicide-bomb attacks if authorities tried to crack down on the mosque and its followers.

For those on the Left who see Christianity as the worst religion, tell me how this compares? Is it acceptable in your "reality based community?"

Funny how you do not hear the complaints about separation of church and state for Muslim countries, eh? But, mention the Easter Bunny, and conniption fits ensue.

  2. I wish he did. He is way to civil, unfortunately.

  3. John Ryan says:

what percent of “the left” thinks that christianity is the worst religion ? Pelosi is a Catholic and attends church EVERY Sunday. One of the bases of the Democratic Party are American Jews. In the last Federal election the Jewish vote went 87% to the Democrats. Does the right think that they should all be hanged as traitors ?

  4. […] it was a female Pakistani minister who was in trouble for hugging a man, then Richard Gere for hugging and kissing Shilpa Shetty, […]
