Interview Advice

For some of you younger folks out there who are going on a job interview, here are some tips

  1. Dress appropriately. When in doubt, over-dress. Your local library will have numerous books on what is appropriate.
  2. Show up on time. Show up a bit early. If, for any reason, you are going to be a bit late, call! You might find someone like me who will be nice about it, or maybe not. But I won’t even give you a 5 minute fake interview if you are late.
  3. Go easy on the aftershave/cologne/perfume. Don’t reak it up.
  4. For women, easy on the cleavage. With today’s potential for sexual harrasment suits, any interviewer (male or female) will be very wary of the interview.
  5. Be confident
  6. Listen to the questions, answer with specifics.
  7. Be personable.
  8. Because of lawsuit potential over “fairness,” companies usually ask the same questions to every candidate. If you do not know the answer, do not BS it. Say it is outside your experience range. There are usually backup questions.
  9. Did I mention dress appropriately and be on time?
  10. Be prepared. Study up a bit on the job. It’s alot easier nowadays with the Internet(s)
  11. And, finally, Ask For The Job. Nothing pleases an interviewer more, and you may get the job over someone more qualified just for Asking For The Job.
