NY Times and Fireman

The New York Times was one of those who took shots at President Bush over Kerry’s "opening firehouses in Baghdad and shutting them in the United States of America" sound bite. Sorry, no link, it is in the NYT’s archive which requires payment. They have taken numerous shots at Mayor Bloomberg over the same issue. But today’s article sure seems as if the firefighters themselves are not that important:

Less than five months after a Bronx fire forced two firefighters to jump to their deaths, the New York Fire Department is preparing to give each firefighter a costly rope escape system that was largely designed by a team of city firefighters using their off-duty skills in rock climbing and metalworking.

Costly. It is costly. It is more costly, comrade Times, to lose firefighters, and not just in monetary terms. But wait, there’s more. The Times has to make multiple references to the cost of the program, culminating in:

The $11 million is roughly what it would cost to annually operate the six fire companies closed two years ago. Mr. Scoppetta said the escape system was a more critical need. "If they had had a system such as we’re developing, this choice to go out the window would not have had to been made," he said.

They had to sneak that one in. Of course, without firefighters, there are no fire companies.

Comrade Times gives some grudging praise for the development of these new ropes, but it seem to be more done by rote, rather then any real praise, such as the would give to anyone who is condemning the Bush admin. Pretty much typical Times.

KLSD (snort, chuckle)

Found via Da Goddess, this made me laugh. The name of an Air America affiliate and "progressive" radio station in San Diego is KLSD. Figures.

They are, unsurprisingly, in 25th place in San Diego with a 1.6, and a declining viewership, per San Diego Blog. Mwahahahahaha. Compare this to KFMB, which is 6th with a 3.6. That station has Sean Hannity and Michael Savage. KOGO is #2, with a 5.3, and carries Rush Limbaugh. I repeat, Mwahahahahahahaha!

Cass has tagged me.

She actually tagged me days ago, but I was waiting for Sorta Blogless Sunday to do this, something nice. And, again, I like meme’s. It is the tagging that can get difficult.

The rules:

Remove the #1 item from the following list, bump everyone up one place and add your blog’s name in the #5 spot. You need to link to actually link to each of the blogs for the link-whorage aspect of this fiendish meme-age to kick in.

  1. Catallarchy
  2. Unrepentant Individual
  3. No Government Cheese
  4. Villainous Company
  5. Pirate’s Cove

Next, select four unsuspecting victims, list and link to them. Get the plank ready:

So, what is this all about? It is about 5 Things I Miss From Childhood:

1. Summertime. What could be more wonderful then months and months of pure summertime? No worries beyond where you were going to play today, maybe a few chores. But, no work. Get up, Mom makes breakfast, maybe take a worthless shower. Go to the pool, the beach, go fishing, biking, walking, to a fair, ride out to the old bridge over the Manasquan River tailwaters and jump off of it, catch some frogs, and so on. There was almost nothing you couldn’t do, at least until suppertime. And, in NJ, where I grew up, summertime lasted from the beginning of June to the week after Labor Day. Sweet!

2. Being out and about. You could do that when I was a child (just for reference, I’m 37 now). You could go and do all so many things during the summer or after school, and not worry about all the scumbags that seem so prevalent in society today. If we wanted to go riding in the woods, we could. The worst the ‘rentals really worried about was us scraping our knees.

3. Places to play. We had lots of places, that now seem to be all home sites now. Many great woods, a pond, a sand and gravel place that was great for riding our BMX bikes, etc. They never became boring. All gone now.

4. No stinkin’ badges. How nice was it that anyone under 16 didn’t have to pay for a beach badge?

5. Vacations. All you had to do was show up. No worries, no planning, no need for money. Heck, you barely had to pack. The ‘rentals took care of it all. And when you got there? Just have fun.

On the ACLU wacko’s

Jay over at Stop the ACLU needs your help. A little snippet:

The American Civil Liberties Union has been shredding some documents over the repeated objections of its records manager and in conflict with its longstanding policies on the preservation and disposal of records.

The matter has fueled a dispute at the organization over internal operations, one of several such debates over the last couple of years, and has reignited questions over whether the A.C.L.U.’s own practices are consistent with its public positions.

Go here to read it all.

What he needs you to do:

Urge passage of HR 2679, The Public Expression of Religion Act of 2005. What this bill does, is to remove the ability for the award of federal funding in order to recover legal fees in 1st Amendment Establishment Clause challanges. These suits are often taken pro bono. But once won, the attorneys are able to recover legal fees from the government.

We need to get groups like the ACLU off the Taxpayers’ Dime. Call, write, or email your Congressman and Senators and urge passage of this bill.

Best place to start is here, at Congress Merge. Go. Now. Do. Important.

Quick Thought

On Fox News this AM, Ellen Ratner said, in reference to Howard Dean’s nutty anti GOP comments, in particular, the one about Republicans being Evil, that he was, and is, just playing to the Democrativ base. Interesting. So what she is telling us is that the Democratic base is a bunch of hate filled loons who can only deal with the negative. Must make the regular Democrats feel great.

I don’t ever remember Ken Mehlman saying stuff like that. Oh, yea, that’s right, Ken goes out and raises money, like the Party Chairman is supposed to.
