Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D): Say, Let’s Use RICO Against Skeptics

Criminalizing thought, by a guy who uses vast amounts of fossil fuels and energy within his own life

(Washington Post) Fossil fuel companies and their allies are funding a massive and sophisticated campaign to mislead the American people about the environmental harm caused by carbon pollution.

Their activities are often compared to those of Big Tobacco denying the health dangers of smoking. Big Tobacco’s denial scheme was ultimately found by a federal judge to have amounted to a racketeering enterprise.

The Big Tobacco playbook looked something like this: (1) pay scientists to produce studies defending your product; (2) develop an intricate web of PR experts and front groups to spread doubt about the real science; (3) relentlessly attack your opponents.

Thankfully, the government had a playbook, too: the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, or RICO. In 1999, the Justice Department filed a civil RICO lawsuit against the major tobacco companies and their associated industry groups, alleging that the companies “engaged in and executed — and continue to engage in and execute — a massive 50-year scheme to defraud the public, including consumers of cigarettes, in violation of RICO.”

Some folks take exception when I refer to Progressives as “nice fascists” (the nice part refers to massive government “for your own good””): how’s that phrase sounding when you have a sitting US Senator wanting to prosecute anyone who fails to follow the Cult Of Climastrology using RICO? Might Whitehouse and his Warmists allies think that even a little blog like mine is an “ally” of fossil fuels companies?

The coordinated tactics of the climate denial network, Brulle’s report states, “span a wide range of activities, including political lobbying, contributions to political candidates, and a large number of communication and media efforts that aim at undermining climate science.” Compare that again to the findings in the tobacco case.

He seems very upset over our 1st Amendment Rights.

Walter Olsen at Overlawyered notes

Law professor Jonathan Adler, by the way, has already pointed out that Sen. Whitehouse’s op-ed “relies on a study that doesn’t show what he (it) claims.” And Sen. Whitehouse, along with Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) and Edward Markey (D-Mass.), has been investigating climate-dissent scholarship in a fishing-expedition investigation that drew apointed rebuke from then-Cato Institute President John Allison as an “obvious attempt to chill research into and funding of public policy projects you don’t like…. you abuse your authority when you attempt to intimidate people who don’t share your political beliefs.”

Whitehouse ends his free speech chilling op-ed thusly

To be clear: I don’t know whether the fossil fuel industry and its allies engaged in the same kind of racketeering activity as the tobacco industry. We don’t have enough information to make that conclusion. Perhaps it’s all smoke and no fire. But there’s an awful lot of smoke.

So, he actually has no clue. But, you can bet he wants to investigate, to ramp up the Climastrology witch-hunt.

New Paper States That The Oceans Did Not Eat All The Warming

As the Great Pause continues to lengthen, 18+ years and counting, members of the Cult of Climastrology have come up with all sorts of excuses, many of them very inventive. One of their big ones was that all the warming is suddenly hiding in the deep oceans. Why is it hiding? Why now, and not during the spike in warming from 1980-1996? What mechanism caused it to hide? Stop asking inconvenient questions, you darned dirty denier!!!!! It’s science!!!!! I bet you hate science and worship the Koch brothers!!!!!

(The Hockey Schtick) A new paper published in Ocean Science Discussions directly contradicts the claim that “90%” of the alleged “missing heat” from anthropogenic global warming has disappeared into the deep oceans below 2000 meters. This was, according to the authors, the favored excuse (out of more than 70 ‘excuses’ at this point) for the “pause” or “hiatus” of global warming over the past 18+ years.

Warming of the deep oceans, however, would cause thermal expansion of the deep oceans and add to sea level rise [called steric sea level rise]. The authors examined several datasets including satellite altimetry, ARGO floats, and the GRACE gravitometer satellites, and find that the thermal expansion of the deep oceans and contribution to sea level rise is “negligible,” and thus, there is no evidence that the alleged “missing heat” “trapped” by greenhouse gases has somehow sunken to the deep oceans. In addition, the “missing heat” is also nowhere to be found in the upper oceans, nor the atmosphere (because in reality it was lost to space as increased outgoing IR radiation over the past 62 years).

The authors find the sea level budget of total sea level rise is “closed” with “negligible” contribution from the deep ocean, thus no warming or thermal expansion from the “missing heat” in the deep ocean can be accounted for:

The full paper can be found here, for those who want to read the science.

Of course, the information contained in the paper will be of no consequence to Warmists (and, note, as the authors point out, much more research needs to be done), as “climate change” is a belief system, with its roots in far left politics, not a science system. To the members of the CoC, nothing will change their belief that all changes in the climate and weather during the Modern Warm Period are caused mostly/solely by Mankind. If the global climate switched to a typical Holocene cool period, or even a new glacial age, CoC members would still blame this on Mankind and demand some sort of tax, along with more rules, regulations, and laws that restrict freedom.

Democrat World: Baltimore Has Highest Monthly Murder Total Since 1971

Congratulations, Democrats who control Baltimore lock, stock, and barrel. Congratulations, Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, who wanted to give thugs space to destroy. Congratulations, prosecutor Marilyn Mosby, who took the side of the thugs

(Baltimore Sun) With three men killed in eastside shootings on Sunday, Baltimore recorded its deadliest month in more than 40 years.

The 43 killings in May surpassed the 42 homicides the city saw in August 1990, and left Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake defending police and her administration. (snip)

Baltimore has recorded more homicides in a single month: There were 44 in December 1971 and 45 in August 1972.

But in that era, the city had approximately 908,000 residents — nearly 300,000 more than today.

Peter Moskos, a former Baltimore police officer who is an assistant professor at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York, called May the city’s deadliest month ever based on the per-capita homicide rate.

Baltimore’s homicide rate per 100,000 population in May was 6.1 — topping the rates in the early 1970s, Moskos wrote Friday on his “Cop in the Hood” blog.

In that Cop In the Hood blog post, Moskos notes that based on population density, May has the highest murder total since records started being kept in 1970.

This is your city, Democrats. This is what you made. This is your responsibility. Did you know that 27 pharmacies were looted during the April riots? It wasn’t just that CVS that appeared on the news and Twitter. The DEA is investigating the theft of all the narcotics.

The typical homicide rate per 1,000 per year is 0.37 in Baltimore. The national average is 0.04. There have been 116 homicides in Baltimore this year. The yearly average is 233, so Baltimore is well on its way to exceeding that shameful number. Right now Baltimore is safer than just 3% of American cities. That will surely rise.

This doesn’t even encompass any potential spike in other violent crimes (assault, rape, and robbery). Nor do we have numbers on property crimes, which have been running at double the U.S. national median.

It should also be noted that murders and shootings are also up in many other heavily Democratic cities, cities that have utterly failed the Black residents, who are committing high levels of Black In Origin crimes. Democrats can’t blame Republicans (though we know they will try), as Democrats have been running these cities for 40+ years, instituting their policies.

Fearmongering: This Is The Last Generation Of Kids To Live Longer Than Their Parents Due To “Climate Change”

The latest bat guano insane prognostication from the Cult Of Climastrology

Insights into climate change’s impact on children released

IF we don’t tackle climate change as a matter of urgency, this will be the last generation of children to live longer than their parents, warns leading Australian child health researcher, paediatrician and former Australian of the Year Professor Fiona Stanley.

This goes well above and beyond the typical use of a facepalm, as i would usually include. It’s pure and utter mularky, and scaremongering for political purposes. It’s a shameless use of children for the CoC’s hardcore leftist propaganda. I’d say they should feel utterly ashamed of themselves, but, they feel none ever.

One would also think that if Warmists were so concerned they’d act like it’s a crisis and change their own behavior.

Team Obama Readies More Gun Control Regulations

Isn’t it wonderful how people surrounded by armed agents, often with high power weapons, want to do all they can to restrict citizens from exercising their 2nd Amendment Right. Of course, these will all be portrayed as reasonable

(The Hill) The Justice Department plans to move forward this year with more than a dozen new gun-related regulations, according to list of rules the agency has proposed to enact before the end of the Obama administration.

The regulations range from new restrictions on high-powered pistols to gun storage requirements. Chief among them is a renewed effort to keep guns out of the hands of people who are mentally unstable or have been convicted of domestic abuse.

Gun safety advocates have been calling for such reforms since the Sandy Hook school shooting nearly three years ago in Newtown, Conn. They say keeping guns away from dangerous people is of primary importance.

But the gun lobby contends that such a sweeping ban would unfairly root out a number of prospective gun owners who are not a danger to society.

“It’s clear President Obama is beginning his final assault on our Second Amendment rights by forcing his anti-gun agenda on honest law-abiding citizens through executive force,” said Luke O’Dell, vice president of political affairs at the National Association for Gun Rights.

If Obama hates guns so much, his Secret Service protective agents should be armed with billy clubs, tasers, and mace once he leaves office.

As proposed, the regulation makes it illegal for some who has been convicted of a misdemeanor domestic violence offense to own a gun.

The ATF plans to finalize the rule by November, according to the Unified Agenda.
But gun rights advocates are concerned the Obama administration will use this rule to unfairly target certain gun owners.

“That could be a person who spanked his kid, or yelled at his wife, or slapped her husband,” warned Michael Hammond, legislative counsel for the Gun Owners of America.

It could be someone who left their kid in their car for 5 minutes while they ran in the store, or let their kids be “free range”. This could restrict women, as more than 3 million men are victims of domestic assault. 4 million women are victims. By the administration’s own argument, alcohol should be banned, because

  • Over 80% of men who killed or abused a female partner were problem drinkers in the year before the incident.
  • More than 2/3 of homicide and attempted homicide offenders were intoxicated at the time of the incident, compared to fewer than 1/4 of their victims
  • More than 1/4 of homicide offenders used both alcohol and drugs during the incident, compared to just under 6% of non-lethal partner abusers.

They are also looking to cast a wide net on people with “mental illness”

Gun rights advocates argue it would be more effective to ban people on an individual basis, as opposed to banning all people who are mentally ill.

“A person who experienced a temporary reaction to a traumatic event or who has trouble handling household finances may well be treated the same as a violent psychopath,” the NRA wrote.

“Not only is this unjust and stigmatizing, it creates disincentives for those who need mental health treatment to seek it, increasing whatever risks are associated with untreated mental illness,” it added.

How will they define this down? Say, are you super afraid of spiders or snakes, to the point of it being a phobia? Are you a little OCD? Do you get anxiety? Do you have “exaggerated worry about everyday routine life events and activities, with symptoms lasting at least six months; almost always anticipating the worst even though there is little reason to expect it”? Have panic attacks? An eating disorder? Autism? Attention Deficit? Celebrity Worship? Dyslexia? Nicotine withdrawal? Premature ejaculation? Insomnia? Stuttering? Tourettes? Good news, you have a mental disorder, so, you might be banned from owning a firearm.

Oh, hey, look, here’s another mental disorder

Narcissistic personality disorder is a mental disorder in which people have an inflated sense of their own importance, a deep need for admiration and a lack of empathy for others. But behind this mask of ultraconfidence lies a fragile self-esteem that’s vulnerable to the slightest criticism.

A narcissistic personality disorder causes problems in many areas of life, such as relationships, work, school or financial affairs. You may be generally unhappy and disappointed when you’re not given the special favors or admiration you believe you deserve. Others may not enjoy being around you, and you may find your relationships unfulfilling.

So, it could be very dangerous to have guns around these types of people, hence, no body guards should have guns.

Uh oh, the rule would restrict illegal aliens from lawfully purchasing firearms. That should make liberals hate the rules.

Look, the proposed rules are not all bad. For one thing, they would restrict those convicted of crimes where they plead guilty by mental disorder from owning guns. Of course, what if it was just shop-lifting? Like many who are convicted felons, not all are the same. What if they were convicted of tax evasion, or other non-violent crimes? This is just another one-size-fits all bit of rule making.

Washington Post Warmist Totally Concerned GOP Ignoring “National Security Threat”

Why, yes, yes, this is a growing Cult of Climastrology talking point. Will it obtain the stature of “sustainability”, “food security”, and other Warmists notions? Time will tell. Here’s Catherine Rampall (opinion writer)

The national security threat that Republicans are ignoring

When it comes to the 2016 Republican presidential primary, the candidates have found two big, fertile policy arenas in which to stake out territory: climate change and national security.

Specifically, presidential hopefuls are scrambling to show who is most aggressive on national security and who is most passive on climate change. The ideal candidate would, presumably, be able to claim both superlatives.

But this set of stances is incoherent as a policy platform. Actually it’s worse than incoherent. It’s an oxymoron.

That’s because climate change is a national security issue. You can’t credibly claim to be tough on national security and terrorism while simultaneously boasting how unconcerned you are about global warming.

Obviously, what comes next is “consensus”, that it’s all manmade, blah blah blah, the same old story that can be read time and time again. Now the CoC hysteria is being used to go after Republican presidential contenders. CNN went after Ted Cruz on this same issue on Wednesday.

But extreme weather — high temperatures, droughts, storms, floods — is politically destabilizing. It can lead to food and water shortages, mass migrations, destruction of infrastructure, disputes over refugees, pandemics. Sure, it doesn’t directly create armed conflict or militia groups, but it can generate the conditions under which these threats are more likely to emerge and thrive. Such prospects are scarier when you consider that many of the parts of the world most vulnerable to climate change are also areas with weak governance and civil unrest. Global warming is, if nothing else, a threat multiplier. (note: this is still from Wash Post piece)

Is climate, created by weather, a threat? Of course. It always has been. Especially during cooler periods. Holocene cool periods have seen much worse conditions for war, conflict, disease, starvation, and such than during the warm periods.

At the end of the day, though, if Warmists are so concerned, why have they not given up fossil fuels and gone “carbon neutral” in their own lives? Every little bit helps, ya know. Pick up a few pennies and you soon have real money.
