But even as ocean temperatures climb, extremely cold upwelling events — when strong winds and ocean currents bring pockets of cold water up to the surface, replacing the warm water that was there — are also becoming more frequent and intense, threatening sea life, according to the study published Monday in the journal Nature Climate Change.
“Climate change is actually really complex,” said Nicolas Lubitz, lead author of the study and a researcher at James Cook University in Queensland, Australia. “It’s not just warming of the globe, but it’s really changing the way our oceans function.”
Right, right, warming is also causing cooling. I remember back in the early 80’s when we went out for dawn patrol, knowing the waves would be awesome from an offshore nor’easter. Except, it also dredged up deep, cold water, and, it was cold enough you needed gloves and headgear to surf. Fricking mid-40’s water in July. Yeah, we went home and I went back to sleep. Was that because you or your parents drove fossil fueled vehicles?
What I’m not seeing in the article is any scientific proof that this is linked to either man-caused or natural climate change. It’s something that does happen periodically, it’s just that a big even happened. Nor is it shown that climate change of either type is responsible, just that words have to be included to get news coverage.
Obvious solution: Sea animals that like it cold, should go to cold water areas. Animals that prefer warm water should migrate to where the water is warmer. Animals that have a very narrow range of comfort should seek out the gradients between the hot and cold zones. Fixed. Zero tax money required.
Like it matters. The Chinese fishing fleets are strip mining the fish from the sea without regard to replenishment, endangered species, protected habitats, climate change, or water temperature.

96% of the Earth’s water is contained in our oceans: 321,000,000 cubic miles! The oceans are 20,000 to 35,000 feet deep and below 3000 ft deep the temperature is just above freezing!
The oceans are dynamic! There are major and fairly consistent ocean currents – for example – the Gulf Stream originates in the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico and flows NE toward Western Europe. The Stream is about 60 miles wide and a few thousand feet deep. It’s thought to be at least partly responsible for the temperate climate of Western Europe (the latitude is the same as icebox Canada).
The scientists found that cold upwellings (dropping the local water temp some 18F). This resulted in a die off of some fishes and non-vertebrates and claimed this is occurring more frequently now than before.
We know what you’re thinking: Thank the gods and their physics for the high specific heat of water, amiright?? High fives!
Fact: The global average surface temperature is increasing. An average means some areas can be warmer and some areas can be cooler!
Fact: The average has increased about 2F over the past century. Mr Teach calls this miniscule, but the Earth, the oceans, the plants and the animals disagree.
Is it possible that the increased energy residing in the Earth’s surface can cause changes in ocean circulations? What do you think?
Realizing that Mr Teach is less partisan and much smarter than most scientists, on occasion he oversimplifies the arguments because he just doesn’t trust your intellect.

Yet, if you had read the paper, that’s exactly what they found. You may not have heard about it but centuries ago a technology was developed called the “thermometer”. This upwelling is common. Three other factors you should become familiar with is are winds, tides and the rotation of the Earth.
Another example is the Pacific Ocean El Nino Southern Oscillation which includes the La Nina phase where colder water surfaces in the southern Pacific.

Cold water is heavier than hot water. It will not rise through colder water.

The problem is that we have no evidence that global warming is causing this.
And like I said, cold water will not rise through warmer water. It can be forced. But when it rises toward the surface it becomes increasing warm.
