Opera Audience Shouts Down Nutjob Climate Cult Members

One would think that a goodly chunk of the audience would be fellow travelers in a city like NYC, people who would cheer interruptions by climate “activists”, but, as usual, they aren’t happy when their beliefs cause problems in their own lives

Climate activists interrupt opera performance, angering audience: ‘Shut up!’

Climate activists angered opera fans at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, by standing up and screaming during an opening night performance of Tannhäuser, Thursday.

Radical climate group Extinction Rebellion, NYC, took credit for the protest on social media, and shared videos of the disruptions.

Halfway through the second act of the performance, several protesters stood up and demanded an end to fossil fuels. One man scolded the audience to “wake up” to the “climate emergency,” before unfolding a black banner that said, “No opera on a dead planet.”

“Wake up! The stream is polluted! The stream is tainted! The stream is poison! This is a climate emergency! This is a climate emergency. There will be no opera on a dead planet!” he shouted.

Wackjobs. Wearing lots of clothes made with petroleum, using phones made with petroleum. Living in a city that would not survive without fossil fueled deliveries of food and goods. What’s with the stream stuff?

The first disruption was timed by the group to coincide with a character’s line in the opera, Extinction Rebellion said.

“The disruption was timed to coincide with the main character’s declaration that ‘love is a spring to be drunk from,’ and highlighted the fact that, contrary to those words spoken on stage, springs are not pure now, because we are in a climate crisis, and our water is contaminated,” the group said in a statement.

How is the water contaminated from CO2? Wackjobs

As the protesters were ushered out by security, audience members booed and jeered at the activists. The performance was stopped again, when another activist with Extinction Rebellion stood up and shouted a similar message.

Angry audience members demanded the woman leave, shouting “Shut up!” “Get out of here!” “Go outside!” “This isn’t the place!” One person can be seen yanking the protester’s scarf.

I guess mostly Democrat voting New Yorkers who poll highly on Doing Something do not like to be inconvenienced.

Does Mr Teach really believe that all New Yorkers at the opera are alike?

Are all NASCAR fans “fellow goosesteppers”?

And just because one understands the threat of global warming doesn’t mean they support disruption at other events. Would you be upset is a bunch of MAGAts staged a protest Jason Aldean concert??

And just because one believes, despite the lack of evidence and 30-plus years of failed predictions that global warming is an actual threat doesn’t mean they support disruption at other events.

They may be “fellow travelers” but they did pay between $100 and $300 per seat to be there.

    Our esteemed host noted:

Living in a city that would not survive without fossil fueled deliveries of food and goods.

In my very brief time on San Marco Island in Venice, I saw the food deliveries: delivered by small boat, unloaded by hand into a human-drawn cart, to be hauled to the grocery stores, which were more like bodegas than anything else. I guess that they weren’t using any fossil fuels, as motorized vehicles are banned on San Marco, but there was a lot of extra handling, and trips which were just the small deliveries on those small carts. How much extra did food cost the people on San Marco?

Well, it probably didn’t matter too much: San Marco was a residence only for the well-to-do. And the apartment we had? Nice living room, decent master bedroom, but the kitchen was so small that it’s hard to imagine anyone cooking in there.

    • JimS says:

Here in Michigan, Mackinac Island also has a no motorized vehicles policy. (Except for emergency vehicles and snowmobiles in winter.) The fossil-fueled ferries deliver to the docks, where they’re transferred to horse-drawn wagons. Somehow, I suspect the horse byproducts are more toxic than truck fumes. But I suppose the vehicle policy is there to maintain quaintness for the tourist trade.

      • CarolAnn says:

Nah, the vehicle policy is to maintain the in your face virtue signaling of the residents. Radical leftists only have two reasons to exist. First is to get in your face and throw you about everything even what fossil fuels actually are or are not. Second to troll you with their phony virtue is they support murdering babies stealing elections throwing American citizens in prison and starting as many wars as they can.

Cause nothing says I’m virtuous, considerate, compassionate and caring more than killing babies in the womb and Jews on the battlefield.

        • Elwood P. Dowd says:

CarolAnn typed: is to maintain the in your face virtue signaling of the residents

          Wrong for two reasons:

          1) On July 6, 1898, village leaders enacted a ban on motor vehicles after local residents complained the “dangerous horseless carriages” that had newly arrived on the island were frightening their horses.

          2) If you have ever been to northern MI you likely didn’t run into many “leftists”.

Bois Blanc Island is 2 miles away but DOES allow autos. The “leftists” must not have settled there in 1898.

          • JimS says:

You’re correct Mr. D. The ban on autos was voted in way back in the day for exactly those reasons. It’s kept for tourism though. The island is so crowded in summer, at least in the village, that it would be a mess with cars. Heck even bikes are a problem.
BoLo gets far fewer visitors. They don’t even have paved roads.

Interrupt Wagner! That should be a capital offense. 🙂 You’d think there’d be enough swords and other implements of destruction in a Wagnerian opera to deal with protesters. 🙂

    • Elwood P. Dowd says:

“Wagner’s music is a lot better than it sounds.” – Mark Twain

“I have witnessed and greatly enjoyed the first act of everything which Wagner created, but the effect on me has always been so powerful that one act was quite sufficient; whenever I have witnessed two acts I have gone away physically exhausted; and whenever I have ventured an entire opera the result has been the next thing to suicide.”
      – Mark Twain

Twain was fond a few things German:

“Some German words are so long that they have a perspective. Observe
      these examples:”

      Generalstaatsverordnetenversammlungen.
      Alterthumswissenschaften.
      Kinderbewahrungsanstalten.
      Unabhaengigkeitserklaerungen.
      Wiedererstellungbestrebungen.
      Waffenstillstandsunterhandlungen.

I’ve seen the Ring Cycle twice(!) on PBS. Once before TV had stereo and the sound was simulcast on FM. I enjoyed it a lot… but yeah the orchestral extracts are more to my taste.

I like Wagner’s music better than any other music. It is so loud that one can talk the whole time, without people hearing what one says.
