This will obviously go nowhere in the GOP controlled House, but, it is a yet another big reason the GOP better have their act together for 2024, and, my concern is that if Trump loses, he’ll take the House with him. Of course, federal courts all the way to the Supreme Court will kill it. But, what if Democrats pack the Court?
Democrats introducing bill regulating mechanisms of rapid-firing weapons
Sens. Angus King (I-Maine) and Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) introduced a bill Thursday to regulate firearms by outlawing weapons with a magazine capacity over 10 rounds, among other measures aimed at increasing gun control.
The Gas-Operated Semi-Automatic Firearms Exclusion Act (GOSAFE) comes a month after a gunman killed 18 people in a mass shooting in Lewiston, Maine, not far from where King lives.
The act “addresses the lethal capacity weapons like the one used in Lewiston and most of the deadliest mass shootings across the country,” King said in a statement. “Nothing can bring back the lives of our family and friends, but responsible actions moving forward can reduce the likelihood of such a nightmare happening again in Maine or anywhere else.”
Specifically, the GOSAFE Act targets firearms mechanisms, instead of implementing restrictions based on how firearms look. It places a ban on magazines larger than 10 rounds, bans modifications like bump stocks and bans the manufacture of ghost gun kits — build-at-home firearms without serial numbers.
Um, there are very few gas powered semi-automatic pistols. Most gas operated rifles are automatic, and it rather difficult to get the ATF stamp to own one. If you look at that statement link in the excerpt
This capacity must be “permanently fixed,” meaning the firearm cannot accept a detachable, high-capacity magazine that would increase the number of rounds that can be fired before reloading and make reloading easier.
The GOSAFE Act limits a firearm’s ability to inflict maximum harm in a short amount of time by directly regulating large capacity ammunition feeding devices. The bill would limit the number of rounds that large capacity ammunition feeding devices are permitted to carry to 10 rounds of ammunition or fewer. Additionally, the GOSAFE Act makes conversion devices, including bump stocks and Glock switches, unlawful.

The devil is in the details, as they say. My Ruger Max-9 Pro came with a 10 round mag and a 12 round mag: banned or not? Because the bill sure makes it appear as if non-compliant firearms already in the hands of law abiding citizens will be banned. Not just future sales
“I firmly believe we must uphold the laws that protect safe and responsible gun ownership,” Heinrich said in a statement. “This bill achieves that, while taking steps to get those firearms that are inherently dangerous and unusually lethal, designed for maximum harm, out of the hands of those who pose a threat to themselves or others.”
How about enforcing the 30K laws already on the books? How about going after the criminals that use them? It’s mostly not law abiding citizens. It’d be fun if gun manufacturers refused to sell magazines to federal law enforcement that hold more than 10 rounds, especially to the agencies that protect Congress, the White House, and Executive Branch agencies. Will Congress require their protection to carry weapons that do not hold more than 10?

Has anyone noticed? As the left try to skirt the Second Amendment, they’re always going after guns used in incidents in which a significant number of white people have been killed, almost always by a white person, but the vast majority of murders are committed by black criminals killing other black people, and the gun grabbers don’t give a f(ornicate) about those.
Sigh. For whatever reason, societies are more upset with mass murders in schools, churches, stores, theaters, bars, workplaces, concerts and busy streets than in urban street crime.

When semi-auto AR-15 type rifles are taken out of the hands of mass shooters, what will they migrate too? Clumsy hunting rifles with 4 round magazines? Pistols with 13 round magazines? Maybe.
In 1966 Charles Whitman took: .35 pump rifle, 6mm bolt-action deer rifle, .30 M-1 Carbine; .25 pistol, 9mm Luger, .357 magn pistol, and a sawed-off 12-gauge shotgun, to the U of Texas observation tower and picked off students. He had dressed as a repairman and carried his weapons in a foot-locker, transported by dolly in an elevator to the 28th floor of the tower. He unpacked his arsenal on the observation deck some 230 feet above the ground. He purchased many of the firearms, extra magazines and ammo that morning. Police were able to kill Whitman after 2 hours of shooting. Whitman killed 15 and wounded 31. His “best” shot was killing a repairman at 500 yds!!
If Whitman, a US Marine, had access to a single AR-15 and dozens of magazines would he have been more effective? Possibly. There were 12 mass shootings in the US in the 10 years following Whitman’s actions. In the most recent 10 year period there have been over 170.
The 2017 Las Vegas Mandalay Bay shooter built his sniper’s nest on the 32nd floor overlooking the concert venue. He had 14 AR-15 style rifles, multiple high-capacity magazines and ammo. He fired 1058 rounds (1049 from the AR-15s outfitted with rapid fire bumpstocks, 8 from a .308 rifle at gas tanks at 600 yds at nearby McCarron Airport). In the 10 minute shooting he killed 60 and wounded over 400 at ranges up to 500 yards.
Ironically, the next year one survivor of the Las Vegas shooting was killed in a mass shooting in Thousand Oaks CA. That shooter used a .45 Glock with laser sight and several high-capacity magazines. The shooter, a 28 yr old US Marine, killed 12 but wounded no one. Yay for laser sights!!

Glad to see you chose a 9mm double-action pistol for home defense. Nothing is more frustrating than trying to figure out safeties when your life is on the line, pitch black in your house, and you don’t fire your weapon enough to remember precisely what you are doing.
As I tell all my kids and grandkids over the years. YOUR FINGER IS YOUR SAFETY. Don’t put your finger on the trigger until you are in position, ready to fire, and committed to firing. I don’t know how many times at gun ranges I have seen seasoned gun owners pointing their pistols at the hardened concrete floor while fumbling with the safety on a weapon they rarely use.
Concealed carry demands Insurance as in USCCA. USCCA is not as good of an insurance as they used to be so there are a few others that are less restrictive. Because even if you are perfectly justified in shooting someone. UNDERSTAND ONE SIMPLE FACT. YOU WILL BE SUED IN CIVIL COURT and it will cost you 100’s of thousands of dollars to defend yourself.
Just because you can doesn’t mean you should when it comes to pulling the trigger.

Police will pretend to be your friend but anything you say willingly will be used in either legal or civil action and your words can easily be distorted.
TELL them you do not feel well and want to be taken to the hospital. In most police jurisdictions this will terminate any conversation by the police and that jurisdiction will then absorb the cost of the hospital visit, while you collect yourself.
do not willingly make any statements until at least 72 hours have passed. Your attorney will make sure this happens but this is why you respectfully decline to answer any questions and tell them you are sick and need to go to the hospital.
And never ever have the weapon in or on your person when the police show up. That is a prescription for a mag dump into your body.
Insurance is a must these days for all gun owners. There are many good ones. Do your research. Most are fairly cheap….10-15 dollars per month. Some a bit more.
Most of all. Spend time at the range. Learn your weapon, learn how to hit someone in the head at 25 meters, but practice at 17 meters. 17 meters is the distance a perp can close before you can remove the pistol from your holster, aim, and fire. Why do I say headshot and center mass?
Do not carry a round in the chamber until you are proficient with your weapon. In other words, do not take a 2-hour shooting range practice for your concealed carry permit, and then consider yourself a pro. And by pro I do not mean shooting, but in HANDLING of said weapon.
Excellent advice, D&G. I’d like to add a couple of minor comments, if you don’t mind.
First, the PO-PO may seize your firearm for the investigation, this depends on the jurisdiction. Hopefully, it will be returned, but it may be ‘lost’. Don’t buy an expensive pistol unless you are willing to lose it. There are plenty of quite serviceable 9mm pistols available for less than $500. With that, 9mm is probably the best cartridge for general personal defense. Adequate power, common, inexpensive, and a wide selection of firearms available. Buy commercial ammo, don’t use reloads in your PDW.
Second, if we’re dealing with a complete noob, acquiring a .22lr pistol in a similar size as the PDW could make initial practice sessions more successful. Not terribly expensive, cheap to shoot and mild recoil. Helps a beginner develop good fundamentals. The .22 is not suitable as a PDW, but can be pressed into service if nothing more suitable is available.
Good advice unklc. My wife exclusively shoots a 22lr Glock at the range, and you are right; it provides an excellent weapon of choice for learning how to handle a weapon.
I exclusively provide my students with 22lr glocks for our two-hour practice range after classroom study for all the reasons you pointed out. Especially cost.
My concealed carry weapon is the Glock 19 with an extended mag and a second mag attached to my belt. When concealed carrying, never carry the weapon in your back like you continually see in Hollywood movies. Falling on your back on top of that weapon and crushing your spine has put thousands of people in the hospital and given them long-term injuries. Side carry or front carry(Inside the belt), as in my case, is what I recommend. (There is just something about having a Glock 19 pointed at the family jewels that gives you perspective when you draw it.) Wear loose clothing, and make sure that you practice drawing and aiming with an empty weapon daily before you head out of the house.

Anyway, the best home defense firearm is one you’re comfortable with and have practiced with.
Many recommend a 12g semi-auto tactical shotgun loaded with buckshot. Great stopping power, more forgiving with aim, less recoil than a pump, less chance for penetrating walls over 9mm. Semi-autos are more expensive than pump actions but have less recoil and can be fired at a faster rate than a pump. Semi-autos are more finicky about ammo so you must practice with the desired shells (especially make sure low recoil ammo actuates the gas-operated function). As always, store safely and keep them out of reach of kids.

The practical problem in the US is that we have as many firearms as citizens and the idea of confiscating legally obtained guns is a non-starter. And guns last a long time.
If by magic all semi-auto guns disappeared, yes the murder rate in the US would fall. Mass shooting would fall to almost zero, and importantly, forcing gang bangers to use revolvers would cut the murder rate.

In fact, the US has a massive gun ownership database that shows who owns what gun and the serial number of said gun.
How you ask?
A private gun dealer is by law forced to fill out a form that goes to the FEDS for a background check. This check is benign. It supposedly does not get put in a database of buyers. However, these gun dealers go out of business by the 1000s over the years and their personal trove of forms that register said firearm become the property of the US GOVERNMENT which is then entered into a database showing that DOWD bought a 12 gauge at so and so for XXX number of dollars and what the serial number is along with all other pertinent information.
I had purchased a .300 blackout pistol brace short barrel rifle when it was perfectly legal. The FEDS then decided that all pistol braces were illegal and made 10,000,000 Americans instant felons.
Additionally the short barrel aspect of the pistol made it a short-barrel rifle as a result making the weapon Illegal.
After the Feds changed the RULES and no law was passed I removed the pistol brace and separated it a great distance from the weapon. I also removed the 1x laser scope which makes a pistol a rifle because a scope is meant to be used in the same manner as a rifle.
Both of these laws were struck down as unconstitutional allowing for the fact that the DEA cannot make Rules which willy nilly turn law abiding people into felons overnight. Even democratic Judges struck down both of these rules as blatant over reach.
That being said, every citizen who buys a gun must fill out a form that is sent to the FEDS for approval to buy that weapon. The FEDS have 72 hours to approve or deny that weapon. If the dealer does not hear from the FEDS they can sell the weapon legally. The feds can however determine at a greater length of time that said weapon should not have been sold and GO AND RETRIEVE SAID WEAPON.
IF there is no actionable form being sent to the FEDS how are the FEDS capable of going to your home address and retrieving the weapon??????

The homicide rate was much, much higher in the 80s. The record high was 10.4 homicides/100K population. It was 9.82 homicides/100K in 1991 but fell rapidly reaching 5.52/100K by 2020! It jumped 2001 first but came right back down the following years, reaching a nadir (4.40/100K) in 2014. The rate started to creep up in 2016 reaching 4.99 in 2019 and soaring in 2020 reaching 6.42, still well below the 80s. Yet, we’re more afraid now than we were in 1990. Why?
