Sorta Blogless Sunday Pinup

Happy Sunday! Another wonderful day in the Once and Future Nation of America. The Sun is shining, the birds are singing (loudly), and the NJ Devils have made the playoffs for the first time in 6 years, and are the 3rd best team in the NHL. Wasn’t expecting that this year. This pinup is by Fiona Stephenson, with a wee bit of help.

Tens of thousands of Israeli citizens have taken to the streets in opposition to ultra-conservative Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s attempt to overhaul the nation’s judiciary.

Netanyahu’s government is pushing ahead for a parliamentary vote this week on a centerpiece of the overhaul — a law that would give the governing coalition the final say over all judicial appointments. It also seeks to pass laws that would grant parliament the authority to overturn Supreme Court decisions with and limit judicial review of laws.

…critics say the laws will remove Israel’s system of checks and balances and concentrate power in the hands of the governing coalition. They also say that Netanyahu, who is on trial for corruption charges, has a conflict of interest.

Unlike the US, Israel has no constitutional or “basic” law and the Israeli parliament (Knesset) has absolute authority to change the laws.

The left seem to have forgotten: Israeli voters put Prime Minister Netanyahu in office.

Israeli voters knew “Bibi” very well, being the longest-serving Prime Minister in Israeli history, a total of 15 years. No one had any doubt about Mr Netanyahu’s policies. They also knew who Mr Netanyahu’s coalition partners would be.

      • Elwood P. Dowd says:

Commenter: Israeli voters put Prime Minister Netanyahu in office.

Sort of. Netanyahu’s religious-nationalist party, Likud, won 32 of the 120 seats of the Knesset and formed a coalition government with other conservative parties with 64 seats against 56 opposition members.

Certainly, the commenter is not suggesting that political leaders should be able to change government on a whim!

Israelis seemed OK with Netanyahu until he decided to recreate the Israeli gov’t in his image, reducing the role of the judiciary to being subservient to him. Maybe Israelis don’t like the idea of a dictatorship.

Recall too that “the voters” elected Joe Biden. Why haven’t “the voters” disenfranchised by the cheating Dems protested like the Israelis have? It’s almost as if the 70 million or more disenfranchised Trump voters don’t believe their own BS. Imagine if 70 million armed and angry conservatives hit the streets.

    • Elwood P. Dowd says:

Nationwide protests and a nationwide strike forced the religious-nationalist party, Likud, to back off its plans to emasculate the Israeli judiciary. For now.

Israel’s political crisis escalated into uncharted territory Monday as the country’s largest trade union announced a “historic” strike shutting down transportation, universities, restaurants and retailers in protest against Prime Minister’s Benjamin Netanyahu’s planned judicial overhaul.

Seems Netanyahu’s mistake was not first abolishing the labor trade unions!! In addition, the Israeli military is NOT behind the religious-nationalist party’s plans which may deter Netanyahu’s ability to control the nationwide riots as he would prefer. Netanyahu fired the Israeli Defense Minister, Yoav Gallant, who publicly opposed the plan. The firing triggered the most recent protests.

A Netanyahu supporter said, “A situation in which everyone does as they wish is liable to bring about the instant fall of the government and collapse of Likud”.

A Knesset hard-liner said, “We must NOT stop the judiciary reform and must not surrender to anarchy!”

Dang those citizens! They’re threatening minority rule!!

  5. Professor Hale says:

The term “ultra-conservative” is oxymoronic. You cannot be ultra anything and also be conservative.

    • Elwood P. Dowd says:

ultra-conservative vs conservative is like right vs far-right or left vs far-left. All are gradations along the continuum.

Rep Jim Jordan is more conservative than Sen Romney.

Rep Adam Kinzinger is conservative and Rep Marjorie Taylor Greene is arguably ultra-conservative (or just nuts).

In Western culture, depending on the particular nation, conservatives seek to promote a range of social institutions such as the nuclear family, organized religion, the military, property rights, and monarchy. Conservatives tend to favor institutions and practices that guarantee stability and evolved gradually.

American conservatives lived in an America where ‘out groups’ – e.g., Blacks, LGBTQs, brown immigrants, women, Muslims, atheists – ‘knew their place’ and societal norms kept them there. As the out groups evolved increasingly visible positions American conservatives felt more and more threatened, feeling justified in speaking what had been largely unnecessary to speak. It’s not an accident that the nuGOP has devolved into a white, Christian, social culture party.

These are the nuCons or ultra-conservatives. They’re not your father’s Republicans.

radical leftist vs democrat is also like far left vs left. Now that there is no substantive difference between communists , nazis and democrats it’s all moot on the left.
