Movement To Replace Andrew Jackson With A Woman On $20 Bill Gains Steam

Food for thought

(Yahoo News) Change starts with our bills.

A feminist group wants to remove the image of Andrew Jackson from the $20 bill and replace it with a picture of one of the many illustrious women from American history.

The nonprofit Women On 20s thinks the centennial of women’s suffrage, 2020, would be the perfect opportunity to add women, such as civil rights activist Rosa Parks or former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt, to the pantheon of American heroes on our currency.

Interesting notion. As someone on Fox and Friends noted this morning, why not create a new $25 bill instead, and put a woman on it?

Last month, Women On 20s introduced 15 female candidates to replace the 19th-century statesman: Alice Paul, Betty Friedan, Shirley Chisholm, Sojourner Truth, Rachel Carson, Rosa Parks, Barbara Jordan, Margaret Sanger, Patsy Mink, Clara Barton, Harriet Tubman, Frances Perkins, Susan B. Anthony, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Elizabeth Cady Stanton.

Voting began on March 1 to coincide with Women’s History Month.

After garnering at least 100,000 votes, the nonprofit intends to introduce its proposal to the White House in hopes that President Obama will take executive action.

Interesting selection. Some of the women are certainly deserving. Others, not so much. Rachel Carson? She wrote a fear mongering book based on feelings, not science, which has directly led to the deaths of millions, particularly Black people in Africa, through her insanity over DDT.

Margaret Sanger? An unabashed eugenicist and racist, who ushered in the big time business of abortion on demand, and very much wanted to limit the births of babies to Black people.

How about Janis Joplin? Or Pat Benatar? Grace Slick? Aretha Franklin? Patsy Cline? Some of the most important women in American music.

How about Molly Pitcher? Or Sacajawea. Dorothea Dix. Lucy Stone. Elizabeth Blackwell. Mary Bliss Parsons. Katherine Hepburn.

On the list, which you can vote on, I’d go for Clara Barton or Susan B. Anthony.

There’s probably a rule against portraying people who are still alive, as there is with stamps. If so, that would eliminate Pat, Grace & Aretha. I’d suggest Pearl Bailey, Billie Holiday or Ella Fitzgerald.

  2. Kevin says:

I nominate that girl from Rohan who stabbed the nazghul king. She was shockingly beautiful. Or a young Margaret Thatcher. That would be awesome :).

  3. Proof says:

Let’s keep it to presidents past and present:
Reagan for the $20, Obama for the $3.

  4. Well, I’d we’re going down that road, I’d go with Ripley from Alien.

Did you know that that woman from LOTR is essentially the only female truly discussed in the whole book?

  5. Kevin says:

    Hey, that IS weird.

Wait. Galadriel. She got a lot of play in The Two Towers when they entered her forest. Luthien Tinuviel was of some import in the Silmarillion. And, holy cow, I can’t think of a single woman in The Hobbit! Was there even one?

That is hilarious, Teach. I can’t believe I never noticed that on my own. Especially since when I read those books (age 13) females were of keen interest to me.

  6. Kevin says:

Obama for the 77 cent piece. Every time he pays a man a dollar, he has to pay a woman one of his coins.

  7. John says:

Teach weren’t most right wing conservatives including Winston Churchill
And Teddy Rooservelt big proponents of eugenics ?

“Teach weren’t most right wing conservatives including Winston Churchill
And Teddy Rooservelt big proponents of eugenics ?”

No John. You’re thinking of communists like Stalin, socialists like Hitler, and racist left-wingers like the mother of Planned Parenthood, Margaret Sanger. It’s tough to get the two groups confused, but you are not the first to do so.

  9. Jeffery says:

Rachel Carson? … directly led to the deaths of millions, particularly Black people in Africa, through her insanity over DDT

So much of what conservatives accept as Gospel is just untrue. This is just one more right-wing myth.

How did a DDT ban in the US kill millions in Africa? The Stockholm Convention, effective starting in 2004, banned DDT for agricultural use. It has been used in the past and is still used for vector control in Africa.

The deaths in Africa from malaria are not because of the lack of DDT, or because of author Rachel Carson.

We have Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, Hamilton, Jackson, Grant and Franklin on the smaller bills now. Grant was one of the worst Presidents and is a constant reminder to our neo-confederate seditionists that Grant thwarted their rebellion. But replacing his image with Rosa Parks would piss off Southerners even more.

  10. The Neon Madman says:

Not for me. I like Old Hickory. He was a first-class badass and 10 times the man that any of our politicians are today

  11. Conservative Beaner says:

    Neon,

Jackson served in the War Of 1812 and the Seminole Wars. He ran for office with a bullet in his chest as a result of a duel where his opponent was allowed to shoot first. Insulting Jackson’s wife was his opponents next to last mistake, the duel was his last.

    He survived an assassination attempt.

More of man than the current crop of scum in office, both parties included.

  12. Deserttrek says:

the idiocy of the far left never ceases ….. as for the resident libs, Teddy Roosevelt was not a conservative by any means, and rachel carson is a far left loon whose lies have killed millions, that is not political it is fact … too bad facts never sink in … time to get rid of the tin foil

  13. Jeffery says:

    dessert,

Did you not read what I wrote? Rachel Carson is not responsible for killing millions of Africans. DDT was only banned in Africa for AGRICULTURAL uses, not for killing mosquitoes, and only AFTER 2004. But why let facts get in the way of a good myth, right?

I realize that conservatives view common sense as a commodity, to be cited to win arguments, but does it make sense to you that one book “full of lies” would turn around the use of a “valuable” insecticide, not only in the US but in almost all advanced nations? The Stockholm Convention did not ban DTT use until May 2004 (and then only for agricultural use). It is used to this day in Africa for protecting homes and citizens from mosquitoes carrying the Plasmodium parasite. WHO (World Health Organization) still recommends its use.

You can have someone read to you all about it.

I’m not sure where you get your information but someone is lying to you.

Here’s another article on Rachel Carson and Silent Spring.

Correcting right-wing myths one lie at a time…

  15. You have brought up a really fantastic point. Thank you for sharing your article.

  18. Hank_M says:

Right wing myths? Here, let me help you Jeffery.

Rachel Carson is indeed responsible for millions of deathsin Africa. She claimed that DDT would eventually poison the entire food chain eventually resulting in the death of mankind. Her book was a classic example of scientific dishonesty.

Nevertheless Green groups and Leftists embraced her work. This includes
Greenpeace, EDF, USAID, the Sierra Club, World Wildlife Fund, Audubon Society and others. They put tremendous pressure on
the EPA resulting in the ban of DDT. William Ruckelshau, the head of the EPA when the ban was established was later quoted as saying that “The ultimate judgment [on DDT] remains political.”

As to DDT being banned, it didn’t have to be banned. Environmentalists along with USAID, THE EU, WHO, United Nations Environment Program, UNICEF and others
warned poorer countries in Africa that grants to their govts would be withheld if they continued to use DDT. This along with other left leaning organizations such as the Rockefeller Bord Fund, The Turner Foundation and the Heinz Philanthropies threatening to withhold their grants if DDT was used resulted in DDT no longer being used to fight Malaria.

The result? I’ll let former Naval Surgeon General Harold M. Koenig explain. “Carson and those who joined her in the crusade against DDT have contributed to millions of preventable deaths. Used responsibly, DDT can be quite safe for man and the environment.”

  19. Stosh says:

Margaret Sanger would be fine with me so long as they included some of her bizarre quotes in font big enough to read.

  20. Jeffery says:

    hank

Do you have any evidence to support your claims about NGOs threatening African nations?

They still use DDT in Africa for mosquito control today. They never stopped!

Not even Rachel Carson advocated banning DDT, just that it be used responsibly.

  21. Jeffery says:

    Hank,

Thanks for the links. I’ll review. Clearly the New Scientist article is the most reliable.

Why hasn’t the continued use of DDT in sub-Saharan Africa eradicated malaria?

    and another:

DDT was banned in the US in 1972 – no malaria. DDT has been used steadily in sub-Saharan Africa – almost a million deaths a year from malaria – and DDT resistant mosquitoes, to boot.

  23. Jeffery says:

So, is Rachel Carson responsible for killing millions of African children?

Novelist Michael Crichton says yes. The scientific community says no.
