Civilization Is Doomed From “Climate Change” Or Something

But not immediately. It “could” happen sometime in the future

(Huffington Post) Civilisation is almost inevitably doomed, a Nasa-funded study has found.

Human society is founded on a level of economic and environmental stability which almost certainly cannot be sustained, it said.

The study used simplified models of civilisation designed to experiment with the balance of resources and climate that creates stability – or not – in our world.

These theoretical models – designed to extrapolate from simple principles the future of our industrialised world – ran into almost intractable problems.

Almost any model “closely reflecting the reality of the world today… we find that collapse is difficult to avoid”, the report said.

I love this quote from the report

“The fall of the Roman Empire, and the equally (if not more) advanced Han, Mauryan, and Gupta Empires, as well as so many advanced Mesopotamian Empires, are all testimony to the fact that advanced, sophisticated, complex, and creative civilizations can be both fragile and impermanent.”

The Roman Empire fell as the Earth’s climate moved into a cool period. Weird. And none of those civilizations had the benefit of modern technology as we do now. But, then, this is simply about scaring people that something might happen in the future because of tiny, barely noticeable temperature increase, despite 17+ years of a statistically insignificant temperature rise, and only a 1.4F increase since 1850.

But, hey, what else is NASA supposed to do since they aren’t bothering with the “space” part of their name?

If we are “inevitably” doomed, then why sacrifice anything now to stave off the disaster?

  2. Jeffery says:

Readers: Your Pirate is trying to mislead you. The article was not solely or even mostly about global warming.

—Using his Handy model to assess a scenario closely resembling the current state of the world, Motesharri found that civilisation “appears to be on a sustainable path for quite a long time, but even using an optimal depletion rate and starting with a very small number of Elites, the Elites eventually consume too much, resulting in a famine among the Masses that eventually causes the collapse of society”.

The report stressed, however, that the worst-case scenario of collapse is not inevitable, and called on action now from the so-called real world “Elites” to restore economic balance.

“Collapse can be avoided and population can reach equilibrium if the per capita rate of depletion of nature is reduced to a sustainable level, and if resources are distributed in a reasonably equitable fashion,” the scientists said.—

The Pirate finished his misleading post by repeating his (in this case, irrelevant) lie that the Earth is no longer warming. The Earth’s surfaces and oceans are warming from CO2 added to the atmosphere.

  3. Your Pirate is trying to mislead you..

Would you care to tell me what the headline is at the Huff Post, Jeff?

    Well, let’s evaluate this claim.

The article was not solely or even mostly about global warming.

But climate was a part of the article and the report, so there is no lie here. The only way that this is a lie is if you set up an unrealistic or faux criteria which is what Jeffery does in saying “not solely or even mostly.” This means the only way this post is a lie is if you adhere not to the article, but the false restrictions Jeffery places on the post in order to create a strawman. Since he cannot attack the post, the cited article or the report cited in the HuffPo article, he has to make up something.

Lying scoreboard: Jeffery 1, Teach )

The Pirate finished his misleading post by repeating his (in this case, irrelevant) lie that the Earth is no longer warming.

Let’s go the tape, shall we?

Jeffery claims Teach said the earth is not warming,

What Teach said was: But, then, this is simply about scaring people that something might happen in the future because of tiny, barely noticeable temperature increase, despite 17+ years of a statistically insignificant temperature rise, and only a 1.4F increase since 1850.

This means that Teach did not say what Jeffery claimed he said. There is no way around this. Jeffery’s claim is a clear contradiction to Teach’s statement.

Lying scoreboard: Jeffery 2; Teach 0

Also, Al Gore and Jeffery are still hypocrites in the AGW debate and their unwillingness of Jeffery, Gore and people of their ilk to change their lifestyle shows that their talk about AGW is bluster and they don’t actually believe what they type.

Lying Scoreboard Final: Jeffery 3 lies; Teach 0 lies.

That’s three / zero. Three / love. Three / zip. Three lies to no lies.

It is easy to see who to trust.

  5. Jeffery says:

    Pirate,

I thought that you had read the HuffPost article.

In any event the headline was “Civilisation Is Doomed Warns Safa Motesharri’s Nasa-Funded Study”.

As I stated, you misled your hapless readers by attributing the cause to global warming.

And then, for no apparent reason, you repeat your lie about the warming Earth.

  6. gitarcarver says:

You have to excuse Jeffery…… he just can’t help lying.

As I stated, you misled your hapless readers by attributing the cause to global warming.

Ummmm…. no. That is not what he said and you were beat down with that before.

However, trying to distance yourself from the climate aspect of this shows you either didn’t read the article, did not comprehend it, or just decided to lie (again.

    Here’s what the article says:

His research – funded by Nasa’s Goddard Space Flight Center and published int he Ecological Economics journal – explored the pressures that can lead to a collapse in civilisation.

These criteria include changes in population, climate change and natural disasters. Access to water, agriculture, and energy are also factors.

Climate alarmists always say that climate change results in more natural disasters, so the two are linked (at least in the mind of the alarmists.)

In the lying game, saying that climate change is not addressed in the study is a lie. New score: Jeffery 4; Teach zero.

Oh, and by the way Jeffery, Al Gore and you are still hypocrites in the AGW debate and your unwillingness of you, Gore and people of your ilk to change your lifestyle shows that your talk about AGW is bluster and that you don’t actually believe what you type.

Actions speak louder than words Jeffery.

  8. As I stated, you misled your hapless readers by attributing the cause to global warming.

Nope. I mentioned “climate change”, which is mentioned in the article. Many, many times.

Furthermore, this same study is being pimped around the ‘net, particularly amongst Warmist websites, as proof of doom from “climate change”.

And, what lie about the “warming earth”?
