Heralding a new era in biology, scientists for the first time have created a synthetic cell, completely controlled by man-made genetic instructions, which can survive and reproduce itself, researchers at the private J. Craig Venter Institute announced Thursday.
“We call it the first synthetic cell,” said genomics pioneer Craig Venter, who oversaw the project. “These are very much real cells.”
Created at a cost of $30 million, this experimental one-cell organism opens the way to the manipulation of life on a previously unattainable scale, several researchers and ethics experts said. Scientists have been altering DNA piecemeal for a generation, producing a menagerie of genetically engineered plants and animals, but the ability to craft an entire organism offers a new power over life, they said.
…..then isn’t it possible that all life was created, rather than just being random chance about equal to winning Powerball 4 straight times in a row?
IMHO as both a Christian and biologist, these folks did NOT ‘create’ anything. They even admit to it in this paragraph:
“We make a genome from four bottles of chemicals; we put that synthetic genome into a cell; that synthetic genome takes over the cell,” said Dr. Gibson. “The cell is entirely controlled by that new genome.”
They used pre-existing chemicals to ‘manufacture’ a genome, which they then injected into a host cell – that genome ‘took over’ the cell. That’s assembly, not creation.
In fact, it’s much more like a virus.
When these geniuses have a repeatable experiment commencing with the periodic table and ending a reproducing life, they shall have arrived.

I see nothing new here. How is this any different than copying DNA strands and placing those new strands into another cell?
This is nothing but a clone. Oh, but they throw in the “synthetic” moniker. Any process that copies DNA that is not natural is … synthetic.
