So, remember all those folks rounded up on the battlefields of Afghanistan, fighting against us, wearing no uniforms, and now at G'itmo? The Geneva Convention makes them enemy combatants. Heck, they could be considered spies and executed. Well, the Defeatocrats have made their support of them official
A group of Senate Democrats introduced legislation yesterday that would restore habeas corpus rights to all detainees in U.S. custody and would narrowly define what it means to be an "enemy combatant" against the United States, a measure designed to challenge laws ushered in by the Republican-controlled Congress last year.
The bill, titled the "Restoring the Constitution Act of 2007," strikes at the core of the Military Commissions Act of 2006 by giving detainees access to U.S. courts. It was introduced by Sen. Christopher J. Dodd (Conn.), a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination.
I have a wee bit of news for Dodd and the others: Constitutional Rights only apply to those who are US citizens or are applying for citizenship. They do not apply to non-Americans. We generally give them to folks who came here legally. Unfortunately, they are also being given to those who came here illegally, too. But, do we want to give them to those caught on the battlefields of Afghanistan? You know, the folks associated with Al Qaeda? Seriously, what if we were to catch Osama Bin Laden, and just throw him in a prison cell? Would these Defeatocrats have an issue, or would they demand a trial with US rights?
However, I have to wonder if they either do not understand what they introduced, or are just making some sort of concession to the Leftards
The bill would also prevent the executive branch from making blanket determinations about who is an enemy combatant and would restrict the president's authority to interpret when certain human rights standards apply to detainees. The legislation would limit the label "enemy combatant" to a person "who directly participates in hostilities in a zone of active combat against the United States" or who took part in the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
In otherwords, everyone at G'itmo, as well as anyone caught in Iraq, and in Afghanistan since the initial operations. However, what if we catch a major terrorist player in, say, America? That would not be an active zone, probably, so we would have to give that terrorist American Rights.
Of course, the Democrats are the same party who convict any soldier accused of a crime before a trial is even held.
And Dodd is, of course, running for President. This seems like a way to throw some red meat, or should that be fresh tofu?, to the nutroots? You can watch them lapping it up at the Hufftard Post
- Yes! Save our constitution and defend the rights of all detainees!
- It's about time.
- Good for Dodd! He just went a little further up on my 'pay attention to this guy' meter. I saw him on one of the news shows tonight talking about something else and I liked what I heard.
- It's about time we stop these thugs from making the United States a world enemy for gross human rights abuses!
Eh, you can read the rest if ya want.
