Global Warming Hysterics Today: Al Gore’s House

Lots of people have posted about John Edwards very large house he is building in Orange County, NC, which is not environmentally friendly. Well, what about Al Gore's house? (h/t Hot Air)

Last night, Al Gore’s global-warming documentary, An Inconvenient Truth, collected an Oscar for best documentary feature, but the Tennessee Center for Policy Research has found that Gore deserves a gold statue for hypocrisy.

Gore’s mansion, located in the posh Belle Meade area of Nashville, consumes more electricity every month than the average American household uses in an entire year, according to the Nashville Electric Service (NES).

In his documentary, the former Vice President calls on Americans to conserve energy by reducing electricity consumption at home.

The average household in America consumes 10,656 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year, according to the Department of Energy. In 2006, Gore devoured nearly 221,000 kWh—more than 20 times the national average. (emphasis mine)

Last August alone, Gore burned through 22,619 kWh—guzzling more than twice the electricity in one month than an average American family uses in an entire year. As a result of his energy consumption, Gore’s average monthly electric bill topped $1,359.

Since the release of An Inconvenient Truth, Gore’s energy consumption has increased from an average of 16,200 kWh per month in 2005, to 18,400 kWh per month in 2006.

Gore’s extravagant energy use does not stop at his electric bill. Natural gas bills for Gore’s mansion and guest house averaged $1,080 per month last year.

“As the spokesman of choice for the global warming movement, Al Gore has to be willing to walk the walk, not just talk the talk, when it comes to home energy use,” said Tennessee Center for Policy Research President Drew Johnson.

In total, Gore paid nearly $30,000 in combined electricity and natural gas bills for his Nashville estate in 2006.

Goodness! Seems as if Al is burning the midnight all day oil. And lots of other things. Not very environmentally friendly, eh? Doesn't look as if he has replaced his incandescent light bulbs, which are bad for the environment, producing, yup! massive amounts of greenhouse gasses. With Compact Florescent bulbs, which are more environmentally friendly and, while cost more, save you in the long term. From 18Seconds.org

If every American swapped just ONE bulb for an ENERGY STAR labeled CFL, it would collectively save more than $8 billion in energy costs, prevent burning 30 billion pounds of coal, and remove 2 million cars worth of greenhouse gas emissions from our atmosphere. Just imagine the difference we could make if we replaced all of the lights we use most!

There is actual science behind that, too. Unfortunately, looks as if AL Gore doesn't care. "Do as I say, not as I do."

And, Al Gore responded to the article through Think Progress (snicker). You can read it (why wasn't the response in the Big Media? Perhaps Al is afraid of creating a situation outside the blogosphere, eh?) I truly enjoy the final paragraph of commentary from Think Progress

These are the lengths that climate skeptics must go to suppress action on global warming. There is no meaningful debate within the scientific community, so the right-wing busies itself with talk about how much electricity Al Gore’s house uses — and even then they distort the truth.

Gee, I wonder who is stopping meaningful debate on global warming? Hmmmmmmm.

As Ed writes

Second, as I mentioned above, purchasing offsets only means that Gore doesn't want to make the same kind of sacrifices that he's asking other families to make. He's using a modern form of indulgences in order to avoid doing the penance that global-warming activism demands of others. It means that the very rich can continue to suck up energy and raise the price and the demand for electricity and natural gas, while families struggle with their energy costs and face increasing government regulation and taxation. It's a regressive plan that Gore's supporters would decry if the same kind of scheme were applied to a national sales tax, for instance.

Give the spice weasel a BAMM!

Teh Goracle of the Global Warming Religion…

AlGore is the number one fingure in the New Church of Global Warming. He said Global Warming was not a political issue, but a moral issue. BS. It is totally political. It is all about killing the American businesses into…

I have just calculated the dollar and carbon savings for my house, given that I have replaced 24 bulbs with CFL. It worked out to saving one tonne per year. For Al Gore’s house 1kWh = 1.6 lbs of carbon (source http://www.earthfuture.com/stormyweather/numbers/) works out to 160 tonnes of carbon per year. It would take a 160 years for me to offset his carbon output for 1 year and I’m only looking at the electricity. Now I have to go find my electricity bill for a comparison.

  3. Great find!

    “An Inconsistent Truth,” anyone?

    Teach,

Here’s another nutjob pushing the “Global Warming Hysterics”:

“Beginning in June 2001, President Bush has consistently acknowledged climate change is occurring and humans are contributing to the problem.”

    http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2007/02/20070207-5.html

  5. Considering how I feel about Bush regarding his illegal immigration and border agent stances, he is a nutjob.

Look, I am not saying that global warming doesn’t exist. Climate is cyclical. Sometimes it will be mostly cooler, sometimes mostly warmer. It happens. What I do not believe, and haven’t seen the evidence for, is that Mankind is primarily responsible. Sure, we bear a small part, mostly in the micro climatic arena. But, there are so many natural forces that effect climate, to feel that man is the primary cause is the height of hubris.

  6. Silke says:

I respectfully disagree. To say climate is cyclical is to disregard the unprecedented rate of change we are seeing. It’s not just that average temperatures are rising, they are rising faster than we have ever seen and they seem to correspond with a rise in the burning of fossil fuels. This is not just about having an opinion. It’s about understanding the science behind climate change and the consensus of the scientific community – which can be found here: http://www.ipcc.ch/

Looking through your archives I found one article (not the scientific report itself) on methane and although it identified methane as one of the sources which traps heat in Earth’s atmosphere it said nothing about Global Warming. Again, where are these scientific reports you keep referring to?

  7. Come on. The report said the temps had gone up less then 1 degree celcius. We came out of the Little Ice Age around 1850. Of course it was getting warmer. We had the Global Climate Optimum before then. That happens. Things change.

Did you know that plants put out methane? Methane much worse of a greenhouse gas then CO2. Should we kill all the plants, or manage them wisely? Nature happens.

What is lost with the whole man is the only cause of global warming hysteria is measures that can help the environment. Stop worrying about CO2 output from cars, and make them cleaner burning. Funny how so many of the global warming disciples show up in limo’s and fly all around the world in private jets preaching that everyone else should be more responsible, eh?

Teach said: Come on. The report said the temps had gone up less then 1 degree celcius.

But the critical issue with what is going on today is not where the temperature is, but how fast it is moving. The rate of warming is on the order of 10 times faster today than seen before:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:2000_Year_Temperature_Comparison.png

Rapid change is the real danger. What we know about ecosystems and what geologic history demonstrates is that such dramatic changes – up or down – are a tremendous shock to the biosphere.

Teach said: Did you know that plants put out methane?

Yes, as I stated earlier I looked through your archives and I read the article on methane (I’m still looking for those other scientific reports you keep referring to by the way). But according to the IPCC’s Fourth Assessment Report the amount of methane in the atmosphere in 2005 (1774 ppb) exceeds by far the natural range of the last 650,000 years (320 to 790 ppb). The primary source of the increase in methane is very likely to be a combination of human agricultural activities and fossil fuel use.

How many green house gases is Al Gore’s face responsible for producing. Have you seen the red faced pic of his senate hearing testimony from 3/21/07. WOW, I think we may have found the problem and source of our global warming problem.
