Nice Disguise, Nancy

You just have to love an opinion piece disguised as a "news story." Start with this headline: "Bush’s Judges Already Making Their Mark." I assumed (incorrectly, it turns out), that the article would be about, oh, I don’t know, some of the decisions that the Bush appointee’s have made. Silly me. I even thought this from the first paragraph:

No need to wait until
President Bush appoints a Supreme Court justice to see how he will make his mark on the federal judiciary. One level down, dozens of conservative appeals court judges appointed by Bush already are helping to shape the law in ways that ultimately could have as much, and in some ways even more, impact than the nine justices of the nation’s highest court.

It was at this point that I realized that this was an opinion piece, devoid of any facts to back it up. It is a subtle piece that is designed to tell the readers (of which there may be quite a few, as this was on Yahoo’s main page, in that little "News" box) that

  1. Bush’s appointee’s are raging Conservative activists who are legistating from the bench, and
  2. the SCOTUS nominations are super important for the Liberals because Bush’s lower court judges are running wild.

Of course, there is no evidence of this, just, as usual liberal media conjecture

Since Bush’s appellate judges have only gradually taken their seats on
benches around the country, and the cases that they draw run the gamut,
it’s still early to chart their impact on specific issues. But already
it is clear that these judges make up a solidly conservative crowd that
tends to lean Bush’s way on the big issues of the day.

Of course they make up a conservative crowd. Wasn’t Al Gore or John Kerry appointing them, you twit. Here is her kicker:

People for the American Way, a liberal advocacy group, titled its 2004
study of Bush’s judicial appointees "Confirmed Judges, Confirmed
Fears." It concluded that Bush appointees already have moved to limit
significantly congressional authority and protection of individual
rights.

Message: we need to stop Bush NOW, before he and his judges take all your judicially mandated rights, like gay marriage, abortion on demand, and criminals recieving therapy, away from you. Gotta make sure that those judges do not allow religion, at least the Christian kind, into, well, anything. And that they do not stick to the Constitution and the Law, otherwise, how can the Progressives (did you know that the Progressive Party was communist back in the 40’s and 50’s?) get their agenda through, other then the courts?

Ted “hiccup” Kennedy on 7/7

Ted pulled his pants up and put down the bottle long enough to release this heartwarming statement:

Our hearts and prayers go out to the families and loved ones of the
victims of this vicious and brutal attack in London. The American
people stand with the people of Great Britain in our resolve to prevent
terrorism to our nations. (slurping sounds followed)

Yup, that is it. Nothing else. I somehow feel dirty excerpting the whole thing. He couldn’t even fit a second paragraph in there, somehow? Even Kerry had a nice statement. Harry "Old Yellow Stain" Reid even had more, which I will post to use against him at a later point

"I extend my heartfelt condolences to the people of Great Britain,
and especially to those in London who endured these depraved acts of
terrorism today. These attacks were cruel and senseless acts, committed
by cowards who see nothing wrong with targeting innocent civilians.

“I am confident that all Americans are committed to ensuring that this
nation does everything it can to help bring justice to those
responsible. We also stand in complete solidarity with Prime Minister
Blair and President Bush, and all the leaders of the G-8 Summit, who
pledged their commitment and resolve to fight and defeat this kind of
extremism and hatred wherever it exists in the world.”

Arabs: a disconnect with reality

From CNN:

On the Arabic-language TV network Al Jazeera, Mohammed Amara —
identified as an Islamist thinker in Cairo — said "those who want to
perform jihad (Muslim holy war) should go and fight the occupiers in
the battlefield and not kill unexpecting innocent people.

"We
(Muslims) do not kill clerics, we do not kill women, we do not kill
children, we do not kill trees.
This is what the prophet taught us. The
U.S. and Britain are committing atrocities against our people
everywhere but we shouldn’t respond to a crime with a crime."

Really? Muslims do not kill clerics? Plenty of stories can be found to refute that claim, but, how about one from today?

The bullet-riddled body of the cleric, identified as Mufti Shamsuddin, 65, was found on Saturday on a street in the poor Orangi district, said area police officer Rasheed Khan.

Thousands of people have been killed in tit-for-tat attacks by rival Sunni and Shia Muslim fighters over the past 15 years. More than 100 people have been killed in the past year.

Two Sunni clerics were killed last month when attackers on motorcycles opened fire on their van in another part of Karachi.

How many women were killed on 9/11 and 7/7? How many women are stoned to death by Islam? How many are used as suicide bombers? If Mr. Amara would like, I can dredge up the story of how a pregnent Israeli women and her unborn child were killed by a Palestinian gunman. And how about the use of children as suicide bombers and "freedom fighters?" Plenty of those stories around. Not sure about the trees thing, but I’m sure it has to do with having them around to hang women who become impregnated while being raped.

What is our crime? To buy the oil that the Arab’s are happy to sell us, without which money they would be living in squalid conditions like their bedoin ancestors? Or is our crime strictly that we are not Muslim?

This is strange

I have rarely read anything in the Grey Lady that has baren any relation to reality, but this editorial, by Fred R. Conrad (reg req’d), actually not only makes sense, but does not scream "bleeding heart liberal!"

Yesterday’s bombings in downtown London are profoundly disturbing. In
part, that is because a bombing in our mother country and closest ally,
England, is almost like a bombing in our own country. In part, it’s
because one assault may have involved a suicide bomber, bringing this
terrible jihadist weapon into the heart of a major Western capital.
That would be deeply troubling because open societies depend on trust –
on trusting that the person sitting next to you on the bus or subway is
not wearing dynamite.

The attacks are also deeply disturbing because when jihadist bombers
take their madness into the heart of our open societies, our societies
are never again quite as open. Indeed, we all just lost a little
freedom yesterday.

But maybe the most important aspect of the
London bombings is this: When jihadist-style bombings happen in Riyadh,
that is a Muslim-Muslim problem. That is a police problem for Saudi
Arabia. But when Al-Qaeda-like bombings come to the London Underground,
that becomes a civilizational problem. Every Muslim living in a Western
society suddenly becomes a suspect, becomes a potential walking bomb.
And when that happens, it means Western countries are going to be
tempted to crack down even harder on their own Muslim populations.

-snip-

Because there is no obvious target to retaliate against, and because
there are not enough police to police every opening in an open society,
either the Muslim world begins to really restrain, inhibit and denounce
its own extremists – if it turns out that they are behind the London
bombings – or the West is going to do it for them. And the West will do
it in a rough, crude way – by simply shutting them out, denying them
visas and making every Muslim in its midst guilty until proven
innocent.

And because I think that would be a disaster, it is
essential that the Muslim world wake up to the fact that it has a
jihadist death cult in its midst. If it does not fight that death cult,
that cancer, within its own body politic, it is going to infect
Muslim-Western relations everywhere. Only the Muslim world can root out
that death cult. It takes a village.

Every time I write anything negative in a broad stroke about Muslims, I, on several levels, feel that that is wrong. While a case can certainly be made for the destructive, disgusting tenets of the religion, are they all bad people? Certainly not. But it is hard to tell when they so often are quiet, and seem to go along with what the radical elements of Islam are doing. Sort of like how the more normal Democrats and slightly left of center folks go along with the radical Left elements.

A pirate thong for Fred

Is Dennis considered torture?

GUANTANAMO BAY NAVAL STATION, Cuba – Packing devastating 150 mph winds, Hurricane Dennis tore down a guard tower at the U.S. detention camp for terror suspects as it stalked Cuba’s south coast and prepared Friday to strike into the heart of the largest Caribbean island.

The U.S. detention camp on Cuba’s extreme southeast end that holds some 520 terror suspects was spared overnight.

Heaving surf tore away a lifeguard tower at Windmill Beach and storm force winds reaching 40 mph destroyed a bus shelter. A few power lines and tree branches were knocked down and there was minor flooding.

"Actually, everybody fared real well," said Navy Cmdr. Anne Reese.

On Thursday, troops watched from a cliff as the churning Atlantic Ocean threw up massive waves of salt spray that towered over the razor wire fence surrounding the camp at Guantanamo Bay.

The troops fixed metal shutters over the steel mesh windows of some prison cells overlooking the sea at Camp Delta, which is just 150 yards from the ocean.

I’m sure some lefty will start in that subjecting the terrorists at G’itmo (what happens at G’itmo stays at G’itmo) is torture.

Meanwhile, back to reality, for those who are in the possible strike area, "RUN, YOU FOOLS!"

Could the Left have even waited a day?

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

By midmorning on July 7th, the hard left was already up to their normal moonbattery, saying that the London bombings were caused by the Iraq War (no mention of Afghanistan by the Left, of course.) They were discussing petitions and dialogue, great ideas when dealing with murderous fanatics (sic). And, of course, it was all President Bush’s fault. They say "If only he had gotten Osama," as if the capture of one man would end world wide terrorism. But, that is what the "reality based community" believes.

Their big rationale is that the Iraq war created more terrorists, what the wackos call "BCT’s", Bush Created Terrorists. No, loons, what the Iraq war has done is brought the extremist elements out into the open, and, for the most part, dragged them into Iraq, like a cartoon character follow the scent trail from a pie. You complain that most of the 9/11 hijackers were Saudis (funny how that is one of the only things you remember from that day, along with My Pet Goat. Maybe you should try remembering the people who died that day who were on our side). Yet you waffle when asked if we should invade Saudi Arabia. Well, we have done something smarter then destroying the worlds economy by invading SA. We are pulling those Saudi’s into Iraq, and killing them there.

You say that the "flypaper" theory, which was about "we’d rather fight them in Iraq then over here," obviously doesn’t work, and London is the proof. Well, no one said that we or our allies would never get hit again. Most of us are waiting for the USA to be attacked again, and some, like me, are amazed we haven’t, but we understand that this is a war for the long term. We understand that terrorism may never be fully defeated, but will will give it the old college try, and show that America doesn’t back down from a fight, except for the Hard Left, who, if in charge in Colonial America, would have surrendered to the Indians.

So, go write your petitions, and offer to sing Kumbaya with the Islamic beheaders. Meanwhile, I’ll watch as the people of the UK harden their resolve and rally around the idea of destroying terrorism. The Nazi’s couldn’t defeat them, nor could the IRA, and the neither will the terrorists.

Babs Boxer doesn’t get it

I started to add this to my post about the London bombings, but I thought it deserved to face the moonlight by itself:

This horrific terrorist attack reminds us again that our focus must be to
apprehend terrorists all around the world and do much more to protect the
American people by improving security in our transit systems, at our nuclear
power plants, at our landmarks, and at our ports.

I send my deepest sympathies to our British friends, and I will do all I can
to refocus our attention on our united goal after 9/11: to capture those
responsible for these inhumane acts of terrorism
. (emphasis mine, of course)

Babs still lives in a 9/10/01 world. This is for you, Babs:

Terrorist Attacks in London

I’m sure everyone has heard about and will blog about the attacks in London. Very surreal.

Three explosions rocked the London subway and one tore open a packed double-decker bus during the morning rush hour Thursday. The blasts killed at least two people and reportedly injured more than 90 in what a shaken Prime Minister Tony Blair called a series of "barbaric" terrorist attacks.

Blair said it was clear the attacks were designed to coincide with the opening of the G-8 summit in Gleneagles, Scotland. The prime minister said the meeting of world leaders would continue but that he would return to London.

"Whatever they do, it is our determination that they will never succeed in destroying what we hold dear in this country and in other civilized nations throughout the world," said Blair.

A group calling itself "The Secret Organization of al-Qaida in Europe" posted a claim of responsibility for the blasts, saying they were in retaliation for Britain’s involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Web statement, republished on the site of the German magazine Der Spiegel, could not be immediately confirmed.

I’m sure the resident Moonbats will blame this somehow on President Bush, as well as avoiding the mention of Afghanistan, and the fact that the Muslim extremists basically want to kill non-muslims. Or will they get it? We’ll see by the end of the day.

Update: the talking heads have been discussing how important London is to England, and how, if you shut down the transit system, you basically shut down England. The tubes (subway system) will reportedly be shut down for the rest of the day.

More: President Bush made a good point in his comments. These world leaders are at the G8 to discuss ways to end hunger and aids, to look for ways to save the environment, etc. The terrorists are there to kill innocent people.

More: Jody at Steal the Bandwagon links to Fiesty Republican Whore, who proclaims we should decorate our blogs with a British Flag. Great idea. We are in this together. The British stood with us on 9/11, and we should stand firm with them.

Scarborough and Plame

Every knows, or should have, a working knowledge of the Valerie Plame situation, and how Judge Hogan is saying "release your sources name, or go to jail." Judith Miller of the NY Times was sent to the pokey yesterday, even though her source said she could reveal the name. But, apparently Joe Scarborough has gotten his knickers all bunched up on this one.

Americans lost their best check on corrupt politicians today, and they don’t even know it.

Federal Judge Thomas Hogan sent New York Times reporter Judy Miller to jail today for refusing to divulge the name of a source who "outed" an undercover CIA agent.

While the media is focusing on how Miller’s jailing will impact American journalism, I am far more concerned with how the court decision will undermine good government in Washington.

As one who has worked in the back rooms of Congress, I know government corruption and political misdeeds are most often revealed by unnamed sources anonymously passing must-know information to a reporter.

Sorry, Joe, I usually agree with you, but, this time, you are off the edge of the map. The journalists in the Plame case are protecting one or more people who "outed" a supposed CIA operative, ie, someone in the Directorite of Operations vs someone in Intelligence, Science and Technology, or Administration. The journalists aren’t protecting someone who gave up a big, juicy story about bad people. Whether or not a crime was committed by outing Plame, they are not protecting a big whistleblower. Reveal the name, let’s get this over with.

It won’t be Rove, either, as I have said. Where it Rove, these journalists would have finally "rolled over" last year, as near to the election as possible. I still have my money on Joe Wilson.

I bet the ACLU gets involved. Huh? Doesn’t count, eh? :)
