Oops: Environmental Groups Tend To Be Pretty Darned White And Rich

The post writer at Grist tends to put this in racist terms, but, could it be that quite a few minorities just do not care about “climate change”?

And despite civil rights laws, organizations whose mission is to clean the air don’t seem to have grown much more hospitable to people of color. A new report, released today, shows that the staffs of mainstream green groups have been overrepresented with white men despite the groups’ intentions to be more colorful. One of its most damning findings is that “the dominant culture of the organizations is alienating to ethnic minorities, the poor, the LGBTQ community, and others outside the mainstream.”

The report, called “The State of Diversity in Environmental Organizations,” is billed as “the most comprehensive report on diversity in the environmental movement.” It was compiled by a working group of thought leaders on environment and race called Green 2.0, led by University of Michigan professor Dorceta Taylor. The report explores the history of tension between green activism and racial justice, and the many attempts at rapprochement.

From Earth Day 1970 until today, the report says, the majority of the people directing, staffing, and even volunteering at green groups have not only been white men, but they also hail from wealthier households with elite educational pedigrees. A 1972 study of 1,500 environmental volunteers nationwide showed that 98 percent of them were white and 59 percent held a college or graduate degree. Compare that to Taylor’s more recent demographic profiling of environmental orgs where, based on data collected on 166 mainstream organizations from 2004 to 2006, she found that minorities comprised just 14.6 percent of their staffs.

Climate change is truly a First World Problem.

Climahysterics To Take Melting Arctic Cruise On Fossil Fueled Ship

I must say that I am impressed that Warmist Kelsey D. Athernon has noted the hypocrisy

Climate Change Cruise Will Bring Tourists Across The Melted Arctic

See the effects of global warming while contributing to them!

Polar bears are the largest land predators in the world. Confined to arctic climes, they are huge, powerful swimmers, and deadly hunters. In addition to being the second-best bear, they risk going extinct from global warming’s environmental changes. Thanks to an offering by a luxury cruise line, customers can take a cruise through the newly navigable arctic, and try to see polar bears struggling to stay alive on what remains of Arctic ice.

No, most polar bear populations are doing fine, and, realistically, how did they survive during the previous warm periods, which were much warmer? They apparently did survive. Hey, how did they survive during the cold periods, when there was too little open water for them to hunt?

Call it “environmental disaster tourism.” Crystal Cruises is selling an Arctic cruise on the ship Crystal Serenity, which sounds more like a tea sold to tourists in Santa Fe than an ocean-going vessel. Crystal Serenity weighs over 68,000 tons, is 13 decks tall, and can house 1,070 customers.  Bargain-basement book-now prices run just shy of $20,000, though more discerning disaster-watchers can pay $44,000 for a penthouse suite on the inaugural northwest passage trip.

Not cheap. This allows a bunch of richy rich Warmists the opportunity to see an Arctic which is doing quite well this year while not having to mix with the riff raff.

Incidentally, the carbon footprint of a cruise ship, per passenger, is three times larger than that of a 747 flight. For a trip focused on witnessing first-hand environmental catastrophe largely caused by carbon dioxide, it’s odd that the phrase “carbon footprint” appears nowhere on the page announcing the special offer, or the cruise’s FAQ.

Good for you, Kelsey, noting the hypocrisy.

Man With Largest Carbon Footprint In World To Unveil More Executive Actions

And then he flies off to Kansas City, probably for a fundraiser

(The Hill) Keeping with his year of action, President Obama on Tuesday will announce more initiatives his administration will implement to tackle climate change.

As the Environmental Protection Agency launches the second-phase of its extensive outreach on Obama’s signature climate rule Tuesday, the White House will unveil new partnerships with companies like Microsoft and IBM, which have committed to help build tools for agricultural communities to respond to climate changes, according to White House adviser John Podesta.

The administration will also announce a series of executive actions, partnerships, and stakeholder commitments to modernize the nation’s natural gas transmissions, and distributions systems that will help reduce methane emissions.

The White House Council of Economic Advisers released a report Tuesday, which details the economic costs of inaction on climate change. The report, which estimates that if the global temperature increases to 3 degrees celsius, it would cost the U.S. $150 billion per year, is a shift in messaging by the administration on the climate change front.

If ifs and buts were candies and nuts we’d all have a wonderful Christmas. We’ve now had an almost 18 year pause in statistically significant warming. The economic messaging conforms to a recent push by Warmists to portray Hotcoldwetdry in economic terms, in another Typical Attempt To Scare People.

Hopefully this tweet works, using Droid to update have text of test afterwards, in case)

@markknoller: In late afternoon, Pres Obama heads to Kansas City, MO. He’ll have dinner with several who’ve written him letters about their problems.

Essentially, Obama’s using an official event for his meet and greet. And using lots of fossil fuels.

Jodi Earnest Talks About Nullification Or Something

The “or something” refers to the crazy headline at The Daily Beast “Exclusive: GOP Senate Candidate Caught Saying States Can Nullify Laws” which is not born out by the article

Joni Ernst, the Republican nominee for U.S. Senate in Iowa, appears to believe states can nullify federal laws. In a video obtained by The Daily Beast, Ernst said on September 13, 2013 at a forum held by the Iowa Faith & Freedom Coalition that Congress should not pass any laws “that the states would consider nullifying.”

“You know we have talked about this at the state legislature before, nullification. But, bottom line is, as U.S. Senator why should we be passing laws that the states are considering nullifying? Bottom line: our legislators at the federal level should not be passing those laws. We’re right…we’ve gone 200-plus years of federal legislators going against the Tenth Amendment’s states’ rights. We are way overstepping bounds as federal legislators. So, bottom line, no we should not be passing laws as federal legislators—as senators or congressman—that the states would even consider nullifying. Bottom line.”

Except, she did not specifically state that states can nullify laws, she said that Congress should not pass laws that states might consider nullifying. There is a difference. Many states are truly unhappy about many of the insane laws passed by Washington. This is a direct result of the passage of the 17th Amendment, which made Senators directly elected by the citizens, rather than appointed by the state legislators. No longer are Senators representatives of their state government, who put their states first, but minions of their national parties, simply looking at national solutions (or, is that “solutions”?).

Ernst, a first-term state senator, has never explicitly supported pro-nullification legislation in her time in the Iowa state senate. However, she co-sponsored a resolution that says “the State of Iowa hereby claims sovereignty under the Tenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States over all powers not otherwise enumerated and granted to the federal government by the Constitution of the United States.” It was introduced in response to “many federal mandates [that] are directly in violation of the Tenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States.”

Good grief, a legislator who apparently thinks highly of the Constitution! The nerve! But, she never said that states can nullify.

Red State: Obama Is Malicious, Not Incompetent

I’m not quite sure if I agree with Erik Erickson’s full assessment, but he makes a good case

For the longest time I have chosen to chalk our President’s stumbles, bumbles, and disasters up to incompetence. He is in over his head. He is inexperienced. He is out of his league. It is hard to accept otherwise.

But it is clearer and clearer that is not true. It is clear that President Obama’s disastrous policies are premised not in incompetence, but in maliciousness. Our President — and he is our President — is not a stumbler and a bumbler, but a Nero who when not persecuting Christians, plays golf while the world burns.

President Obama has surrounded himself with a group of people who comport to his own world view. That world view is very simple to explain: Barack Obama and his advisors belief that in order for the world to be safer, they must make the United States less safe. In order for the world to be stable, the United States must be less stable.

In short, Barack Obama blames America first.

Most of his article is premised on how Obama sees the world and America’s role, which is about tearing down the U.S. into “just another country” while fomenting issues around the world. The question is, is this maliciousness on the part of Obama, or is it on the part of the people he hired? Is he truly incompetent? With a smattering of indifference? Jeff G at protein wisdom digs deep into the archives, back to November 5, 2008

This “good man” was involved in ACORN blackmail schemes. With an attempt to fraudulently undermine the Second Amendment by gaming court rulings. He got rich off of schemes that led to the mortgage crisis — then stood by and let others fix it in order to keep his hands clean during the final stages of an election. He has thrown in with race hustlers,”reformers” who believe that domestic terrorism was a valid form of expression, odious foreign potentates –

There is nothing at all noble about praising a man and a party who reviles you simply because in doing so you appear noble. Jews have tried that. And it’s often ended with skeletons and ash, or the twisted wreckage of a bus in Tel Aviv. (snip)

Sorry. But good men don’t lie, cheat, steal, and throw longtime supporters by the wayside just so they can rise to power — even if they’ve convinced themselves they’re doing so for some Greater Good.

Which is it, maliciousness or incompetence? I don’t believe it is that simple. It’s a confluence of both, with indifference. He’s certainly over his head in many areas. You also have to consider his narcissism, his holier than thou attitude, and his king complex. His laziness. We should probably be thankful that he doesn’t work very hard. Many times he just doesn’t seem to care, whether it be about working hard, doing the job, or what happens to Other People, including Americans. He is a petty man, and more than happy to retaliate and/or let his minions, including those in the media, retaliate.

What he has done is surround himself with malicious people who share his world-view, people who are pre-disposed to hardcore Progressive politics and to tearing down America. Jeff G hits closer to the mark that Obama is not a good man. He may not be evil, but his actions go well beyond those of typical politicians.

Only In Australia: Inmates Escape, Get Drunk, Sneak Back In

No, seriously

(ABC.net) At least four prisoners in Darwin are suspected of repeatedly escaping the prison, getting drunk, then voluntarily returning to the facility in the hope no one would notice.

The ABC understands authorities were checking whether low-security prisoners have repeatedly escaped from a work release centre at Berrimah jail for a few hours after a 7pm headcount.

“It would appear that a couple of prisoners have jumped the fence but returned,” a spokesman for NT Department of Correctional Services said.

Authorities were believed to suspect the group, and possibly other prisoners, were from time to time jumping a cyclone fence, getting picked up from a main road by partners and given alcohol and marijuana, before breaking back into prison a few hours later.

They figured something hinky was going on when the authorities took a squizz at 5 inmates were having a blue over a mobile phone and seemed to have the wobbly boot on.

Illegals Demand!!!!!! To Be Part Of White House Meetings

Sadly, this is not The Onion or any parody site

(Washington Times) Illegal immigrants plan to picket the White House Monday afternoon, calling on fellow immigrant-rights advocacy groups to refuse to meet with the Obama administration until President Obama specifically includes illegal immigrants in any future meetings.

“We are among the millions of people who will either benefit or be harmed by the decisions the President makes, and we are here to represent ourselves in any future negotiations,” said Rosi Carrasco, one of organizers, in a statement announcing the action.

Billing themselves “undocumented immigrant leaders,” the organizers said they will erect a picket line to symbolize their demand.

Sadly, these illegals will surely not be arrested during the protest.

Anyhow, again, this is exactly part of the reason illegals have created a backlash: they Demand. As I noted a few weeks ago

They demand that legal American citizens change to accommodate the illegals. The illegals want to “shift the conversation around citizenship”. They can start by stopping the entitlement mentality and being all sorts of demandy. Post 9/11, when the security of the border and concerns over those who were overstaying their visas become a serious issue, illegals could been humble and conformed to America. They could have shown that they really wanted to be Americans, not citizen of another country who was legally entitled to be in America. Stop demanding we provide them with social services, healthcare, taxpayer money, housing, all sorts of things in their language. Instead, they did the opposite. America is a generous country. Illegals took heavy advantage of that generosity, and the resulting backlash is of their own making.

Now they’re demanding representation. This is like gang members demanding that they be allowed representation on parole boards and prison administration. Along those lines:

Bummer: We’re In For A Fiery Doom Thanks To Frozen Pot Stickers

Cause “climate change”, y’all!

Frozen Pot Stickers Are Hastening The World’s Demise

Your favorite doughy midnight snack may be a contributing factor to world annihilation. A fascinating article in this week’s Times Magazine shows how China’s rapidly expanding network of freezers is having a huge impact on global warming.

The world’s number one carbon emitter (We’re Number Two!) is experiencing the boom in commercial and residential refrigeration the United States saw some decades ago, but on a much larger scale.

This [refrigeration] is not simply transforming how Chinese people grow, distribute and consume food. It also stands to become a formidable new factor in climate change; cooling is already responsible for 15 percent of all electricity consumption worldwide, and leaks of chemical refrigerants are a major source of greenhouse-gas pollution. Of all the shifts in lifestyle that threaten the planet right now, perhaps not one is as important as the changing way that Chinese people eat.

Usually, this would be a good time for a

and ending the post. However, let’s jump to the original article, which is not so much about pot stickers/Chinese dumplings, but simply using them as an excuse to whine about modernization and factories. There was actually a good point made early in that NY Times article, in terms of how these factories that spring up causing actual air pollution in China. You’ve seen the pictures of massive smog in China. However, instead of focusing on the dirty air itself, this bat guano insane Warmists have to bring “climate change” into the debate, attempting to make it the focal point, when the dirty air itself should be the primary focus.

The Times, along with Gothamist, are Very Concerned with the rise of refrigeration. The Times’ article notes how much better for human health refrigeration is, but, now that Other People are starting to use it, they are very much against it, cause “climate change”.

For all the food waste that refrigeration might forestall, the uncomfortable fact is that a fully developed cold chain (field precooling stations, slaughterhouses, distribution centers, trucks, grocery stores and domestic refrigerators) requires a lot of energy. In the city of Suzhou, I visited the research-and-development center of Emerson Climate Technologies, one of the largest manufacturers of refrigeration systems in the world. Emerson distributes the compressors, valves and flow controls that cool many of China’s new automated dumpling freezers and yogurt-display cases. (snip)

Calculating the climate-change impact of an expanded Chinese cold chain is extremely complicated. Artificial refrigeration contributes to global greenhouse-gas emissions in two main ways. First, generating the power (whether it be electricity for warehouses or diesel fuel for trucks) that fuels the heat-exchange process, which is at the heart of any cooling system, accounts for about 80 percent of refrigeration’s global-warming impact (measured in tons of CO2) and currently consumes nearly a sixth of global electricity usage.

This is all very easy for Warmists, like the writer, Nicola Twilley, to complain about, because they already have their own refrigeration, and are more than happy to shop at stores which have theirs. They want to stop Other People from getting the same.
