Sorta Blogless Sunday Pinup

Patriotic Pinup Bill Randall

Happy Sunday! Another gorgeous day in the Once and Future Nation Of America. This pinup is by Bill Randall, with a wee bit of help. This one interested me, as I had a long conversation with someone over the march of technology yesterday, the changes I’ve see in just my lifetime. Though, I don’t remember 1959, having been born in 1967. I do remember square TV’s in nice wooden cabinets, though. I remember having a few black and white ones. I remember rabbit ears. I remember there being less than 10 channels, despite being in the NYC market. I remember the wonder of cable TV starting. Now look where we are. Amazing.

What’s happening in Ye Olde Blogosphere? The Fine 15

  1. American Power notes the flags on display at London terror march
  2. Raised On Hoecakes wonders if perhaps WalMart should pay people more
  3. The Lonely Conservative notes another peaceful Leftist Common Core supporter
  4. Public Secrets covers retreating glaciers, which are nothing new
  5. protein wisdom wonders what kinds of people show up at protests
  6. Proof Positive notes less bread, more circuses
  7. Political Clown Parade notes the world’s most dangerous community organizer
  8. Moonbattery covers the cost of stopping “climate change” vs adaptation
  9. Legal Insurrection wonders of McDonalds is replacing cashiers with machines
  10. Jihad Watch covers Islamists stoning a woman to death in Syria
  11. House Of Eratosthenes covers math is hard
  12. Fire Andrea Mitchell has a “you don’t say” for the media regarding terrorist vs militant
  13. Director Blue points out how much ESPN costs you on your cable bill
  14. Capitalism Is Freedom features a mom who is a tad over-protective
  15. And last, but not least, Wizbang notes a lawsuit by an atheist, upset because those who pray get discounts at a restaurant

As always, the full set of pinups can be seen in the Patriotic Pinup category, or over at my Gallery page. While we are on pinups, since it is that time of year, have you gotten your “Pinups for Vets” calendar yet? And don’t forget to check out what I declare to be our War on Women Rule 5 and linky luv posts and things that interest me

Anyone else have a link or hotty-fest going on? Let me know so I can add you to the list. (BTW, since someone asked, the reason I leave links for the previous week up (or you might see a *) is because they are place holders for later in the day or for next weeks. Easier than rewriting all the time. Also, the listing order has to do with how they are added over time, not how good a post is. I just copy and paste from the previous week, then edit. If you see one of the *’s, go ahead and check out the blog anyhow, see if there is an update. I cannot update with my Android during the day.

Pro-Terrorist Activists March On UN In Protest Of Israel

Obviously, all the news outlets (most of whom are a citing this same AP article), are calling them “pro-Palestinian”. At the end of the day, though, they are supporters of the terrorist groups in Gaza, like Hamas, and want the destruction of Israel

(AP) A sea of Palestinians and their sympathizers lined Manhattan streets Saturday, marching to the United Nations and shouting that Israel’s response to missile attacks was genocide that took children’s lives.

“What they’re doing is wrong,” said Ayia Mustafa, 12, of the New York borough of Bronx. “I’m here to protest what’s going on in Gaza. What’s going on is wrong — bad things like killing children.”

She was among about 500 demonstrators who walked to the United Nations on Manhattan’s East Side after gathering behind police barricades off Columbus Circle to protest Israeli actions in the Gaza Strip.

Hamas, which the United States and other countries consider a terrorist organization, governs much of Gaza.

It’s very easy to protest here in the United States. Heck, it is ingrained in the 1st Amendment, as long as it is peaceable. They should try going to Gaza and see what happens if they protest against Hamas launching rockets towards Israel’s civilian population, which sometimes land short and kill Gazans. Not that these anti-Semites would protest in that manner, but Hamas would put them down if they did.

Maybe they could protest Hamas using women and children as human shields. Much of the protest centered around children being killed in Gaza. Children put in harm’s way by Hamas.

Heck, the woman in the shorts, one of many dressed inappropriately according to Islamic law, should try walking around Gaza like that.

Mostafa Asadi, an engineer from Philadelphia who came to New York for the protest, said the current violence in the Middle East started more than six decades ago.

“The Zionists took Palestinian land and expelled them in 1948, and now Israel is trying to control the area,” said Asadi, 55, an Iran native who hoisted a sign that said: “Stop the U.S.-Israeli blockade of Gaza.”

“The Israelis are racist,” said Asadi.

I wasn’t aware that one could be racist against your own race. But, then, this is the level of idiocy we have to deal with. Or, is that brainwashing?

Of course, this was all planned by the communist/socialist group ANSWER (hat tip to American Power), which finally found a protest they like, having ignored military action by the US the moment Obama was sworn in. ANSWER also held another pro-Hamas pro-destruction of Israel march in Los Angeles last weekend.

The Times Of Israel also noted the protest, using the same AP article, and someone notes in the comments

these protesters – everywhere – Such Simpletons. Stop the Occupation. Free Palestine! SImpletons. Free Palestine …. then what?? More grievances, more grievances, endless grievances. More rockets, more unrest, more tunnels, more provocations. Grievances by Palestinians and hamas to the UN – crying about allowing cement deliveries blocking their progress for infrastructure … yet the world sees it was to construct these tunnels – moral of the story – Palestinian leaders cannot be trusted.

At the end of the day, all they want is the destruction of Israel.

Michael Mann Is So Concerned With Climate Change Induced Wildfires That He Took Long Fossil Fueled Trip

The “doom from wildfires” meme has grown stronger amongst Warmists, despite contradictory evidence, but, then, have Warmists ever relied on real world observations, facts, and science? Here’s Michael “Hockey Stick” Mann telling us what he did on his summer vacation

I did my best to get away from work last week while my family and I were on vacation visiting friends who live in Kalispell, the gateway to Montana’s Glacier National Park. But it wasn’t quite possible. You see, I’m a climate scientist. And the spectre of climate change stares you in the face as you tour the park.

He’s Very Concerned about melting glaciers and Pikas, along with wildfires. I wonder how Mike traveled all the way to Montana? I seriously doubt he walked or biked the 2,00o+ miles from Penn State to the park.

Stupid Plants Act Unexpectedly To Hotcoldwetdry

Stupid plants

(Science mag) Not all species flee rising temperatures. As the mercury has inched upward across western North America over the last 40 years, many plant species have moved downhill, toward—not away from—warmer climates, according to the results of a new study. The finding adds to growing evidence that temperature isn’t the only factor influencing how Earth’s life will respond to climate change.

“This is a very cool study and demonstrates what many of us have been saying—that we will get surprises,” writes Camille Parmesan, a climate change biologist at Plymouth University in the United Kingdom, in an e-mail to Science. She was not involved with the study.

Like animals, plants require specific environmental conditions—such as the right temperature, moisture, and light levels—in order to thrive. Even small changes in environmental parameters can affect the reproduction and survival of a species. As global temperatures rise, both animal and plant populations are projected to gradually shift toward northern latitudes and upward to higher elevations where temperatures are cooler in order to stay within their ideal range of environmental conditions.

Yes, as the mercury has inched up a massive 1.5 degrees Fahrenheit since the mid-1800’s, doom. Well, except for the stupid plants which refuse to cooperate with said doom. Who knew that plants like warmth?

The results of the analysis were unexpected. More than 60% of plants shifted their distributions downward, toward warmer, lower elevations—despite significant climate warming across the regions under study, the team reported online on 24 July in Global Change Biology. Even more striking, all plants within a region—regardless of species—moved in the same direction.

It’s almost like nature is flipping the bird at Warmists for thinking that everything must stay static. Which, of course, it never does. There have been numerous cool and warm periods throughout the Holocene, much less the history of the earth, and things change. Life adapts. Except for flat earth Warmists.

EPA Chief: Sure, We Need Climate Indoctrination In Schools

OK, she doesn’t quite say “indoctrination”, but that is what it amounts to, since the Warmists will not allow differing points of view to be taught

(The Hill) Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) chief Gina McCarthy said students should be taught the science behind climate change in schools.

“I think part of the challenge of explaining climate change is that it requires a level of science and a level of forward thinking and you’ve got to teach that to kids,” McCarthy said in an interview with the magazine Irish American published Friday.

Let’s look at the whole quote

Do you think that Climate Change should be part of the educational system?

Very much so. I think part of the challenge of explaining climate change is that it requires a level of science and a level of forward thinking and you’ve got to teach that to kids.

So, if you are not a Believer, you are not a “forward thinker”. Good thing we haven’t had an almost 18 year pause in statistically significant warming that contradicts the Warmists computer models and prognostications, eh?

People didn’t have a sense of how dramatic climate change really is, and what it means for all of us. So that’s been a challenge. But what’s great about renewables is that when you put a solar panel on the roof of a school, you change the entire dynamic of education for the students. It’s hands-on.

The problem here is that we could push for these without the climate hysteria. Of course, it is hands on, because the kiddies will be freezing when the solar panels cannot provide power on cold, cloudy days.

When you wanted to get people active in the environmental world a while ago it was recycling, because you could do it yourself. Part of the challenge today is to make all of these things [affecting climate change] personal enough so that people can get engaged and get active, and feel like there are things we can do together. That’s the hump we need to cross in climate control and I think we’re doing that. I really do, I think people are getting active and engaged.

The thing is, they’ve been yammering about this since 1980. Yet, the majority of Warmists rarely go beyond “spreading awareness” within their own lives. People like….Gina McCarthy!

So you’ve been traveling the U.S. – what have you experienced?

We’ve begun to realize that when you get out of Washington, D.C. and you talk to real people, that they’re worried about the climate. I’ve been to numerous places that have been hit by floods, and places that have been hit by wildfires. I was in California on the drought issue. I’ve been in Utah on the basis of the work that’s going on in Salt Lake City with the mayor doing all kinds of great climate efforts. I’ve been in Iowa talking to farmers, I was in Missouri yesterday…

Hmm, was she using a bike or walking to all those places? If she believes in the “science” so much, why is she criss-crossing the nation using fossil fueled travel?

Obama Weekly Address: Targeted Strikes, Humanitarian Relief In Iraq

This week, with Iraq in full meltdown, Mr. Obama addresses the issues, to a small degree

(White House) This week, I authorized two operations in Iraq.  First, I directed our military to take action to protect our American diplomats and military advisors serving in the city of Erbil.  In recent days, terrorist forces neared the city.  Thursday night, I made it clear that if they attempted to advance further, our military would respond with targeted strikes.  That’s what we’ve done.  And, if necessary, that’s what we will continue to do.  We have Americans serving across Iraq, including our embassy in Baghdad, and we’ll do whatever is needed to protect our people.

Second, we’ve begun a humanitarian effort to help those Iraqi civilians trapped on that mountain. The terrorists that have taken over parts of Iraq have been especially brutal to religious minorities—rounding up families, executing men, enslaving women, and threatening the systematic destruction of an entire religious community, which would be genocide.

The thousands—perhaps tens of thousands—of Iraqi men, women and children who fled to that mountain were starving and dying of thirst.  The food and water we airdropped will help them survive.  I’ve also approved targeted American airstrikes to help Iraqi forces break the siege and rescue these families.  Earlier this week, one anguished Iraqi in this area cried to the world, “There is no one coming to help.”  Today, America is helping.

This is one of those rare instances where I agree with his actions, though I might have recommended less use of “I”, more use of language about “we”. But, that’s Obama. While it’s tragic that Iraq is being lost after all the blood spilled by Americans since 2003, do we really want to re-engage in a ground war? Sadly, though, Obama doesn’t mention that a good chunk of the people who fled to the mountains are Christians looking to escape the radical Islamic terrorist group ISIS. He just says “religious minorities”.

The United States cannot and should not intervene every time there’s a crisis in the world.  But when there’s a situation like the one on this mountain—when countless innocent people are facing a massacre, and when we have the ability to help prevent it—the United States can’t just look away. That’s not who we are. We’re Americans.  We act.  We lead.  And that’s what we’re going to do on that mountain.  As one American who wrote to me yesterday said, “it is the right thing to do.”

He’s right, and this is something Conservatives have been saying for 20 years. We can’t do something about everything.

As Commander-in-Chief, I will not allow the United States to be dragged into fighting another war in Iraq.  American combat troops will not be returning to fight in Iraq, because there’s no American military solution to the larger crisis there.

Again, I don’t want to slam him, as he is attempting to do something, but one has to wonder what ISIS will think we they hear that there is no way ground troops will be used. The proper solution is that the Iraqi military fight hard to defeat ISIS. That’s not happening. One thing Mr. Obama has to consider is what losing Iraq and seeing it turn into a hardcore Islamic state will do to the region.

What we will do is continue our broader strategy in Iraq.  We will protect our citizens.  We will work with the international community to address this humanitarian crisis.  We’ll help prevent these terrorists from having a permanent safe haven from which to attack America.  And we’ll continue to urge Iraqi communities to reconcile, come together and fight back against these terrorists so the people of Iraq have the opportunity for a better future—the opportunity for which so many Americans gave their lives in Iraq in a long and hard war.

Can we prevent ISIS from having a permanent safe haven with just air strikes? The way they are going, they will soon control a huge chunk of Iraq.  Will Obama sit back and watch this happen? How’s Libya doing? What’s going on with Syria? Mary Katherine Hamm asks whether Obama will finally lead on this issue. I do not think that will be necessary, because Obama is not going to fully engage on the issue, and will not use troops on the ground. There will be no plan.

That said, the Washington Post editorial board is not impressed

PRESIDENT OBAMA was right to order military action to prevent a potential genocide in northern Iraq and to stop forces of the al-Qaeda-derived Islamic State from advancing on Baghdad or the Kurdish capital of Irbil. However, the steps the president authorized on Thursday amount to more of his administration’s half-measures, narrowly tailored to this week’s emergency and unconnected to any coherent strategy to address the conflagration spreading across the Middle East.

While U.S. airstrikes and drops of supplies may prevent the terrorist forces from massacring the Yazidi sect or toppling the pro-Western regime in Kurdistan, Mr. Obama lacks a plausible plan for addressing the larger threat posed by the Islamic State. In recent weeks, senior U.S. officials have described the danger in hair-curling terms: The Islamic State forces, which have captured large numbers of U.S.-supplied heavy weapons, threaten not only the Iraqi and Kurdish governments, but also Lebanon, Turkey and Jordan. With hundreds of Western recruits, they have the ambition and capability to launch attacks against targets in Europe and the United States.

Interestingly, they are calling for broader military support. They also note, in different words, that Obama really doesn’t seem to have policies, just half-assed responses to Things That Occur.

More: Powerline’s John Hinderaker makes an interesting point

Characteristically, Obama elevates liberal dogma–”there’s no American military solution”–over reality. The fact is that American military force overthrew Saddam Hussein, put down the Sunni insurrection and turned Iraq into the stable, increasingly prosperous country that Obama once claimed as one of the great accomplishments of his administration. It may become apparent, at some future date, that only American military force can stop ISIS from terrorizing the country. Whether our military should be deployed in that scenario will of course be debatable. But if history is a guide, Obama’s judgment will be ruled by dogma, not the facts on the ground.

Let’s consider that the American military led to solutions for the Civil War, WWI, and WWII. When it was restricted, we ended up with the 50+ year stalemate in Korea and the loss in Vietnam. And, quite often, it’s the threat of an American military solution that keeps other nations and actors in check. Not now.

We’re Saved: Emma Thompson Takes Fossil Fueled Trip To Arctic To Protest “Climate Change”

At some point, you have to wonder if Warmists will ever wise up to the hypocrisy

(Guardian) British actor Emma Thompson has staged a solo protest against Tony Abbott’s stance on climate change during a trip to the icy wilderness of the Arctic.

Thompson singled out the Australian prime minister for criticism while on a visit to the remote island of Spitsbergen. She is pictured holding a sign that reads: “Tony Abbott climate change is real, I’m standing on it!” (snip)

Thompson visited the Smeerenburg glacier in the north-west of Spitsbergen, which is part of the Svalbard archipelago in the Arctic Ocean.

The double Oscar-winning actor is travelling in the region, along with her 14-year-old daughter, on the Greenpeace ship Esperanza to highlight the threat posed by climate change. (snip)

Thompson said: “We’re told that it is all our fault, global warming – we want the fuel, we want our cars, and that the oil industry is merely responding to the needs of a greedy public.

Oh, that marine diesel using ship?

Yes, three engines. Two enormous large displacement marine diesel engines and one APU engine to provide the ship with power when it’s not underway. Marine deisel engines are a lot like the land-based ones, except they burn marine diesel. Marine diesel is consumed in enormous volumes because the engines are constantly at work, unlike a land vehicle where there’s a lot of coasting, a ship needs to have constant power to the props to keep it moving against the the fluid friction it encounters. This combined with less regulation makes marine diesel a lot cheaper than the land-based kind. Cheaper, heavier and dirtier.

Greenpeace has said that it has a “special fuel system” to make it cleaner but they don’t give many details. On the other hand there are plenty of other things they could do to make it cleaner that they seem to have elected not to do. For one thing, they could run it on a cleaner fuel. A marine diesel engine will happily burn something like Jet-A fuel, which is available pretty easily. It’s much more refined and lower in sulfur, resulting in less smoggy emissions and generally cleaner burning. It’s also a lot more expensive, so they might not be able to have as many luxuries on the ship. Even better would be they could use something like LPG, which has proven to work decently as a marine fuel. They’d need new engines, it might slow the ship down and it would be more expensive. But then, aren’t these the guys who say “shame on you” to everyone who flies or drives an SUV?

Read on at the link for much more on the hypocrisy of Greenpeace, which matches up quite well with that of Emma Thompson, who would be standing on, according to her beliefs, the climate change she is causing. Well, except for the Arctic doing very well this year.
