New Jersey Now Trying A “Polluters Pay” Bill Against Fossil Fuels Companies

New Jersey is so worried that the state has failed to give up their own use of fossil fuels

NJ Bill Would Make Fossil Fuel ‘Polluters’ Pay $50B For Climate Change

A proposed state law that would force dozens of fossil fuel companies to shell out $50 billion to help pay for the cost of climate change has taken another step forward in New Jersey.

On Thursday, an Assembly committee voted 4-2 to advance A3735: the “Polluters Pay to Make NJ More Affordable Act.”

Formerly known as the Climate Superfund Act, the bill targets companies that have “engaged in the trade or business of extracting fossil fuel or refining crude oil” since 1995, and have been responsible for more than one billion metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions.

The legislation would generate $2.5 billion annually from an estimated 82 fossil fuel corporations, its sponsors say.

Lot’s of Democrat run states which are not giving up their own use of fossil fuels, especially the politicians, are trying these polluters pay. NJ tried to sue, but, ended up losing in court because “Under our federal constitutional system, states cannot use their laws to resolve claims seeking redress for injuries allegedly caused by out-of-state and worldwide emissions”

The money collected from companies in violation of the law would be earmarked for flood protection, stormwater and sewage system upgrades, extreme weather preparation, health care related to climate change, upgrades to the electrical grid and energy-efficiency projects, among other uses.

Supporters of the bill say the legislation would direct $50 billion over 20 years into infrastructure, flood protection, energy cost reductions and disaster response – without raising taxes or fees on Garden State residents.

Right, right, I’m sure all the money will make it to those projects and not end up in the pockets of friendly NGOs, donors, and politicians

Meanwhile, some Republican state lawmakers have blasted the proposed law, including Sen. Declan O’Scanlon.

“Make no mistake, the Democrats ‘Superfund’ policy – supposedly to punish the evil oil companies for providing a product we all demand – would result in a massive, $2.5 billion yearly increase in energy costs on New Jersey residents,” O’Scanlon argued at a recent legislative hearing.

“Democrats are essentially saying “Don’t worry! We can charge oil companies $50 billion and they’ll just take the hit to their profits! They won’t simply pass the costs on to us! Trust us!’” he added. “It’s sheer lunacy.”

Hey, maybe they’ll just leave like Exxon. Maybe they’ll simply decide not to sell their products in NJ, especially the smaller companies.

They never tire of being stupid/reckless. Liberals are the problem in America today, without them life would be much nicer.

Sleepy Don has added over $1 per gallon for gas. Not to mention that Americans buying imported items are paying his tariffs to the federal government!

Out of either ignorance, belligerence or partisanship, Mr Teach ignores that society bears the costs of global warming, much as they did from the diseases caused by tobacco. Shouldn’t the billionaires pay in too? What costs you scream?

Burning fossil fuels releases hazardous pollutants like sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, particulate matter and mercury. Poor air quality causes millions of premature deaths globally by asthma attacks, bronchitis, and increases the risk of cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases. Medical bills and lost productivity impose massive financial burdens on individuals and public healthcare systems.

Fossil fuel combustion releases vast amounts of carbon dioxide (CO?) and methane, which trap heat in the atmosphere. Warming global temperatures have increased the frequency and severity of billion-dollar disasters, including prolonged heatwaves, intense hurricanes, droughts, and wildfires. The ocean absorbs roughly 25% of all CO? emissions, altering marine chemistry, making it harder for corals and shell-building organisms to survive, thereby threatening global fisheries and tourism. Extraction and processing (such as oil spills, fracking wastewater, and coal mining). Quite a list! Shouldn’t the oil, gas and coal industry chip in?

A NEGATIVE EXTERNALITY in economics occurs when the production or consumption of a good imposes hidden, unintended costs on society not involved in the transaction. Because these hidden “external costs” (such as pollution) are not paid by the buyer or seller, the market overproduces the good, leading to a market failure.

With tobacco-related injury (cancers, emphysema, premature deaths, heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, osteoporosis etc), patients and their families, insurance companies, Medicare, Medicaid, CHIP and state and local resources paid the price. Tobacco companies made billions.

The Denial of global warming (Jl trigger!!), is promoted by fossil fuel interests to PREVENT accountability for the side-effects related to burning fossil fuels! It’s great business to shift costs to innocent third parties!!

Translation: the Garden State wants fossil fuel companies to collect an additional $50 billion for the state from taxpayers without having to raise taxes directly.

The politicians know than the less intelligent voters and Democrats — please pardon the redundancy! — will think that yeah, the state is sticking it to those evil corporations without realizing that every penny corporations pay in fees and taxes comes directly from the money theu charge consumers for their products.

Watch the brain-dead liberals enthusiastically get behind this new tax. Watch the brain-dead liberals ask why their gas and utility bills skyrocketed.
