Frederick Douglass statue vandalized in Rochester park
A statue of abolitionist Frederick Douglass was ripped from its base in Rochester on the anniversary of one of his most famous speeches, delivered in that city in 1852.
Police said the statue of Douglass was taken on Sunday from Maplewood Park, a site along the Underground Railroad where Douglass and Harriet Tubman helped shuttle slaves to freedom.
The statue was found at the brink of the Genesee River gorge about 50 feet (15 meters) from its pedestal, police said. There was damage to the base and a finger.
In Rochester on July 5, 1852, Douglass gave the speech “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July,†in which he called the celebration of liberty a sham in a nation that enslaves and oppresses its Black citizens.
So, there might be some significance to tearing it down on the 5th
Carvin Eison, a leader of the project that brought the Douglass statue to the park, told the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle another statue will take its place because the damage is too significant.
“Is this some type of retaliation because of the national fever over confederate monuments right now? Very disappointing, it’s beyond disappointing,†Eison told WROC.
All the articles go down this road. What’s more likely, though: a bunch of Confederate statue supporters in Rochester, NY (Hillary 54.9% Trump 39.7% for the entire county) or that a bunch of Modern Socialists, most like the non-black allies tore it down, either to create a situation or because they are just dumb and saw a statue?

Police clear officer who appeared to flash white power sign at Oregon protest
The Oregon State Police on Sunday cleared a trooper who appeared to make a white power symbol during a Black Lives Matter protest in Salem, Oregon, over the weekend.
In a statement, authorities said the trooper made the gesture after seeing a skirmish during the event at the Oregon Capitol on Saturday. He was checking on a man who had been knocked to the ground, police said.
The Oregon State Police said the trooper used his hands because he was wearing a face covering and working in a noisy environment.
“Best available evidence indicates the trooper was simply checking on the man’s status and used the universal signal to signify this inquiry, which the man gestured he was — then patted this trooper and a second trooper on their shoulders in an apparent signal of appreciation,†police said.
Authorities added that the man was the victim of an alleged crime. The protester who allegedly pushed him, Christopher Davis, 50, was arrested on suspicion of disorderly conduct and harassment, police said.
In other words, it was the OK sign. Everything is so stupid these days, and those folks at 4Chan who started this whole thing need to be given the Troll of Decade award.
There is a lot of speculation as to why this statue was vandalized. There is the theory of “pushback” against the destruction of other statues. There is the theory of “a black flag operation” of sorts to rile up even more people. There is the theory that some people are just into tearing stuff down these days.
I am not sure the reasoning matters on some level. Destruction of property is destruction of property. It’s a crime and should be treated as such.
