Democrats May Play Hardball On Dreamers, Threatening Government Shutdown

Democrats should be careful in wanting an all or none position on some sort of legalization for the Dreamers: they might end up with the latter

(Washington Post) Some House Democrats are raising the specter of withholding support for must-pass spending legislation later this year in response to President Trump’s hard line immigration proposals — meaning the fate of roughly 690,000 younger undocumented immigrants could become a major factor in negotiations to keep the government open after December.

Will the media assign blame to Democrats if a budget bill doesn’t get done and we get a shutdown? Of course not, but, the Trump Twitter machine won’t let them get away with that.

Democrats on Monday dismissed Trump’s calls to construct a wall along the entire length of the U.S.-Mexico border, crack down on “sanctuary cities” and seek ways to curb Central American migrants from illegally crossing into the country. But conservative Republicans insisted that such issues must be addressed before Congress considers offering legal status to immigrants brought to the country illegally as children, a group known as “dreamers.”

“What the White House put forward is a complete non-starter,” House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said in an interview, blaming Trump’s senior policy aides for advancing “un-American” ideas on how to deal with immigration.

“There’s nothing in it to negotiate because it does not have shared values of who we are as Americans,” she added.

Essentially, Pelosi and others are wanting that “give us everything we want and we we won’t offer anything back” position and have no problem trotting out their silly talking points to get it. One has to wonder if Democrats are more invested in having an Issue to scaremonger and bloviate on, rather than finding an actual solution. This wouldn’t be unusual for Democrats: when it comes to identity politics and such, if the problem is solved, Democrats have nothing to bitch about.

And, apparently, in Pelosi’s World, following duly passed federal law is now un-American.

“The White House is willing to negotiate. Democrats are not,” said Mark Krikorian, executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies, which advocates for lower immigration levels. “That means the odds of no bill by March have increased — not because the White House principles are overly ambitious but because Schumer is not going to make a meaningful counter offer. They want amnesty in exchange for nothing.”

That’s it exactly. The question here, though, is will elected Republicans stay strong? Even though they control Congress, they seem rather squishy and unable to take a stand.

We thought the GOP held a sizable majority in the House, so why don’t they pass the requisite funding bill? Oh because dozens of far-right Repubs oppose any spending bill. But it’s the Dems fault, LOL.

  2. captainfish says:

fine. shut gov’t down. I’m ok with that. means the spending goes down and they have less of a chance to strip me of my rights and liberties.

    • david7134 says:

Glad to see you back fish. Long time.

    • Jeffery says:

No one ever wants to answer… What rights and liberties have you lost?

      • Rotterdam says:

I think lets put it this way.

        1. The right to have statues in our town squares.
        2. The right to have managers at christmas time.
        3. The right to speak Merry Christmas instead of happy hollidays.
        4. The right to purchase a gun without a background check. Nowhere in the constitution does it require a background check. In fact prior to the Revolution the British made every effort to round up information on all gun toting Mericans.
        5. The right to free speech on certain camupuses.
        6. The right to own and operate a vehicle which is not 15,000 dollars more expensive due to regulations only one side of the political isle wants for themselves.
        7. The right in a union state to obtain a job without joinning a union and paying dues to a company that supports a party that you do not support.

Now lets get into some serious breaches of lost freedoms.

The Patriot act then renewed under Obama.

Assertion of Executive supremacy through “signing statements.”

Doctrine of “Unitary Executive,” elevating the Executive Branch above Congress and the Judiciary.

The 2007 John Warner National Defense Act, which allows the President to deploy the National Guard of one state into another state without the permission of either governor.

Domestic deployment of the military as law enforcement in violation of the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878.

The US National Security Agency and Federal Bureau of … Secret program gives NSA, FBI backdoor access to Apple, Google, Facebook, Microsoft data … Five-year-old program provides government with direct access to email … These companies have all willingly participated in the program, says the Post.

If you haven’t heard, our children no longer have the freedom to setup a lemonade stand in front of our house. Under Obama.

Your property (and cash) can now be taken from you without evidence of a crime, without charging you with a crime, and without you ever getting your day in court.

Be careful how you deposit and withdraw cash from your bank account. If you do it wrong you are guilty of the crime of Structuring. Example would be any deposit or withdrawl of 10k or more would be open to full scale investigation.

We no longer have the freedom to travel around our country without being subject to random and arbitrary stops and searches

The IRS now claims that it has the right to read your email at any time for any reason. You don’t need to be under audit and no warrant is necessary. Their position is that you should have no expectation of privacy in your communications.

Freedom to choose my own Health Care, or to choose to have none.

In short the government is denying a fundamental premise of the constitution which says the pursuit of life liberty and happiness by denying basic freedoms which infringe upon rights guaranteed in the constitution.

One can claim the above are not rights but freedoms and that would be false. They are both. Rights lead to freedom, take away freedom and you have taken away constitutionally guaranteed rights.

The list is legion. The problem with folk like you are that your subversive plot to undermine the constitution by taking away freedoms while claiming no rights are impinged is so sinister that the very foundation of the republic form of democracy is at stake unless the opposition opens their eyes and takes a stand.

Its why people hate Trump. He is taking that stand and rolling back a lot of these lost freedoms to give back the rights of Americans and the left/communists absolutely hate it.

There NOW someone replied to you.

  3. Jeffery says:

    Rot,

Although you’re a foreigner trying to influence American policy (not unlike that Communist Putin), we’ll humor your ignorance concerning America.

The right to have statues in our town squares. Americans can and do have statues in our town squares, although many Americans question the propriety of honoring secessionists and others who waged war against our nation.

    2. The right to have managers (sic) at christmas (sic) time. American governments, federal and local, are not allowed to support one religion over another. American citizens can have all the mangers they want on private property.

    3. The right to speak Merry Christmas instead of happy hollidays. Americans can say whatever they want at Christmas.

    4. The right to purchase a gun without a background check. Nowhere in the constitution does it require a background check. As a foreigner, you can be excused for being ignorant of the US Constitution. Our Constitution says nothing about stop signs, air pollution, F-18s or the NFL. Are you also against traffic signals?

    5. The right to free speech on certain camupuses. This is valid. American college kids are too sensitive and need to suffer the consequences of any violent responses to even vile speech by the KKK, white supremacists and neo-Nazis.

    6. The right to own and operate a vehicle which is not 15,000 dollars more expensive due to regulations only one side of the political isle wants for themselves. Certainly conservatives can elect representatives to change the laws concerning automotive safety and air pollution. Not sure about what happens in your foreign country, but in America you can still purchase a nice Toyota Camry made in Kentucky for under $25,000. And it’s much safer than a 1965 Bel-Air, and pollutes much, much less.
    7. The right in a union state to obtain a job without joining a union and paying dues to a company that supports a party that you do not support. In America, it’s a constant battle between the rights of workers and the rights of corporations (and workers are losing). Is it fair to enjoy all the benefits and protections of the union without paying into it? Sounds like you support deadbeats.
Now lets get into some serious breaches of lost freedoms.
The Patriot act then renewed under Obama. Would you rescind the American Patriot Act?
Assertion of Executive supremacy through “signing statements.” You may have a point. We have made the American president too “imperial”. But EOs have DECREASED with time. FDR signed 3522, Wilson 1803, Coolidge 1203, Hoover 968, Truman 907. W only signed 291, President Obama only 276. tRump is on pace for 528, if he is re-elected (LOL).
Doctrine of “Unitary Executive,” elevating the Executive Branch above Congress and the Judiciary.

The 2007 John Warner National Defense Act, which allows the President to deploy the National Guard of one state into another state without the permission of either governor. Again, passed by the American Congress and signed by George W. Bush. Much of the martial law language was removed by National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2008

Domestic deployment of the military as law enforcement in violation of the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878.

My wife and three children were born in the USA. They have dual citizenship. That is one of the main reasons that I care about the USA. My oldest daughter went to Boston College. Second daughter went to University of Virginia. Youngest Son is attending Oxford in England. His affinity for the USA is not as strong for the USA as he did not live there as long as his two older siblings.

As for your comments. You attempt to refute the irrefutable. Yes cons have statues that are now being torn down. You can go on and on with your attempts at deflection. The truth is the truth.

      • Jeffery says:

        Rot,

Most of your “lost freedoms” were just untrue. A lie is still a lie. And since I refuted many of your imaginary lost freedoms, I guess they are not irrefutable.

The Patriot Act and the associated intrusions of privacy are still hotly debated in America, by Americans. Many conservative Americans were so terrified by the prospect of Muslim terrorists that they willingly sacrificed their freedoms for perceived safety.

The War on Christmas is made up by FOX “News”.

Most Americans believe that background checks are appropriate for those seeking to purchase firearms. So far, background checks have not been found unConstitutional.

Can we assume you reside in the Netherlands? Do you consider you and your countrymen to be more or less free than we Americans?

        • david7134 says:

          Jeff,
Once again you have no idea as to which you speak. Airline checks are a clear violation of the 4th amendment and serve no purpose at all. You will go on about security, but they really don’t secure a damn thing, only theater. The courts have allowed them, but then the courts did allow slavery. Now, if they profiled Muslims, that is constitutional and would serve a purpose. As to Christmas, I encourage you to go to Europe during Christmas to see what we are missing out on. It is amazing, even if you don’t believe. It is fun, coming back here is depressing. And the whole issue has nothing to do with freedom of religion. On background checks, no, that is clearly unconstitutional as well, but courts allow it. I really doubt that they do a thing to stop violence. Patriot Act seems to be used by the Democrats to get to the Republican candidates, as we saw with the surveillance on Trump and group for no reason other than political. When Nixon did that for clear reason he was called a crook, but Obama doing it is ok, yea. Hopefully Trump will find a way to put Hillary and Obama in jail. We have lost a considerable amount of freedom, mostly under Democratic leadership, but Bush did screw things up as well. So, I agree with Rotter.

          • david7134 says:

Oh, I left out something. Rotter can go buy medications in Europe and treat himself. Many of these drugs are illegal here unless you have a doctors prescription. But you don’t have to secure that in many places over there, and they have less people in jail and less issues with drug abuse. Imagine how nice it would be to just go get what you need.
