In order to save Gaia from a few degrees of warmth, we must raise the price of living
(Chicago Tribune) Southern California’s biggest water wholesaler says it faces an extra $10 million to $50 million in annual expenses to comply with California’s global warming law.
Those costs will flow down to ratepayers already stressed by steeply rising bills, said the giant Metropolitan Water District, importer of most of the water used in Southern California.
To forestall this increase, Metropolitan is asking for an exemption from the “cap-and-trade” greenhouse emissions requirements of Assembly Bill 32, the Global Warming Solutions Act, said Jeff Kightlinger, Metropolitan’s general manager.
The solutions always seem to be worse than the cause.
“Metropolitan occasionally has to import power to move our water off the Colorado River, and the only way we can get that power is through a connection that moves in the power from Nevada and Arizona,” Kightlinger said.
Kightlinger said Metropolitan doesn’t object to AB 32; it is just objecting to being classified as an electrical utility.
Ever notice how those who Believe never want to be the ones to pay the price? If Metropolitan Believes, they should be willing to Do Their Part and take the monetary hit without passing the cost on.
Meanwhile, that international jet setter James Hansen pens a screed over at the NY Times
GLOBAL warming isn’t a prediction. It is happening. That is why I was so troubled to read a recent interview with President Obama in Rolling Stone in which he said that Canada would exploit the oil in its vast tar sands reserves “regardless of what we do.”
But, not troubled enough to stop taking so many unnecessary fossil fueled flights around the world. Anyhow, Hansen spends lots of time talking about how there should be a “carbon” tax (it’s imprecise to call it that when we are not discussing carbon, bit CO2) and stuff, but, no, it won’t cause any issues. Really. You can trust him. Seriously. Look, a shiny quarter.
Sadly, Jonathan Adler at The Volokh Conspiracy buys into this idiocy. My response in the comments
You’re really off the rails on this one, Jonathan. First, according to Warmist doctrine we aren’t supposed to listen to Hansen, since he doesn’t actually hold a degree in climate science.
2nd, for a guy who is calling for a carbon tax he sure takes quite a few unnecessary fossil fueled flights all around the world. Why isn’t he leading by example?
3rd, time and time again we see that “carbon” taxes simply drive up consumer prices while putting more money in the hands of a central government. People do not want this. Reference the recent Queensland elections.
If you want to live the carbon neutral lifestyle, be my guest. Let us know how that works out.
