I am not a climate change scientist, but I have come to understand that I am a climate change victim. Our daughter took the lead investigating destructive lightning in Maine. She found that the NASA Goddard Institute estimates a 5-6% change in global lightning frequencies for every 1 degree Celsius global warming. The Earth has already warmed .8 degrees Celsius since 1802 and is expected to warm another 1.1-6.4 degrees by the end of the century. Maine’s temperatures rose 1.9 degrees Celsius in the last century and another 2.24 degree rise is projected by 2104. I learned from our insurance company that while the typical thunderstorm produces around 100 lightning strikes, there were 217 strikes around our house that night. I was shocked to discover that when it comes to increased lightning frequency and destructiveness, a NASA study concluded that eastern areas of North America like Maine are especially vulnerable. Scientists confirm a 10% increase in the incidence of extreme weather events in our region since 1949.
.8C, huh? Wow, that’s ……. well, miniscule, and still less than occurred during the multiple warm periods that occurred over the last 7,000 years. Remember when we were told that “weather is not climate”?
Was the lightning bolt in our kitchen caused by global warming? The facts are too compelling to ignore. It seems that global warming turned my family into refugees in our own lives, stripped of everything that once carried our memories and meaning. Since then I’ve learned some lessons that may help others reckon with the realities of climate change and the terrifying prospect that our future will be different from our past.
I don’t want to make light of her tragedy, yet, she herself decided to take a random act of nature and use it for political gain. And blaming CO2 for this random act of nature is about as stupid as it gets. I will give her points for installing solar panels and a windmill, but living in a big old house is bad for globull warming.

So, over the last 200 years, when we had more pollution and less pollution controls, our temp only rose 0.8C (if we assume that is correct).
But, because we are now wanting to turn our back on science, and ignore the 97% of every friggin scientist on earth, our temperature will now rise by 1.1 or 6.4C in 78 years.
Man. Wonder how that is possible as we are on a cooling trend for the last 15 years? Or, that we are still way below historical highs of the past?
So, because her wittle ickle storm only produced 200 lightning strikes above somehow created average of 100, then man must be responsible?!?!?!?!?!?!
COME TO THE PLAINS STATES DARLIN’. Let me show you a real storm!!!! You will be thanking man and our technology for only being struck by ONE lightning strike instead of having your home leveled by an angry F-5 tornado that tears down your whole town while killing hundreds of people.

And note from the graph that we are talking about a change in anomaly of 1 degree C (-0.4 to +0.6).
However, many acclaimed scientists dispute this data but even using NOAA’s data, you can see there really hasn’t been statistically significant warming since before 2000.
And, if you take a look at sea ice extent, you might find that those numbers actually fluctuate from year to year as well. Odd huh. That ice extent would fluctuate while at the same time the temperature of the world fluctuates?!?!? Odd huh.
Oh.. I know what you want. You want to go back to the good ol’ static days when our ice planet had that icky gooey center, don’t you? No? Ohhh, you want to go back to those static climate days when our planet was one giant ball of roiling magma. No? You can’t be talking about that one static time in our recent past when the planet was basically nothing but water, are you? no, can’t be that.

To add on the GB’s excellent info, John, because the planet is in interglacial period. Which happens. It gets warm, particularly with a nuclear furnace in the sky and a really hot bit below our feet.
The Northern Passage has been open in the past. Look it up.
