WTW: UN Picks War Criminal?

Morning, y’all, Jebediah Murphy here, with the truth at ma side. Now, I know any Defeatorcrats will immediately think "George Bush!!!!!! Yaarrrrrrrrgh!" when they hear the phrase "war criminal," but, for those of us in Reality Land

The Rwandan general selected as deputy commander of the U.N. peacekeeping mission in Darfur is suspected of committing war crimes related to the 1994 Rwandan genocide, U.N. officials say.

Maj. Gen. Karenzi Karake, 46, was accused by Belgian-based United Democratic Forces-Inkingi, an umbrella group of Rwandan oppositionists, of ordering political assassinations before the 1994 genocide, and afterward, of ordering or overseeing massacres of Rwandan refugees in Congolese camps.

The U.N. peacekeeping department, which is trying to put together a $2 billion mission in Sudan’s western province of Darfur by December, has asked Rwanda to withdraw Gen. Karake’s name until the general can be properly vetted.

Rwanda has refused.

Gen. Karake, a high-ranking member of the Rwandan army’s military and intelligence units, was nominated to the post by Rwanda’s government and approved as the No. 2 official for the joint mission by the African Union (AU) and United Nations.

So, let me get this straight: he was nominated, and no one thought to investigate his background prior to approving him? Granted, he has only been accused of atrocities, but, considering what they are related too, ie, the slaughter of over 850,000 Rwandans (as Bill Clinton and the United Nations looked the other way), perhaps General Karake might not be the best person to be a top commander in an area where another genocide is occuring.

Can you imagine if Bush had nominated someone like this? The Democrats would go ballistic. Heck, they would go ballistic if he nominated a saint. But, surely they will ignore their wonderful U.N.

At least the UN had the cajones to bring this up, but Rwanda says that they better think twice regarding the General, otherwise they might pull out, and, according to the story, Rwandan troops are pretty darn good. But, even the hint of impropriety could damage the mission, which, while I really could care less for the United Nations, I do care about the slaughter going on in Darfur, and would like to see it stopped, regardless of who is involved.

    Yes
If such a thing DID happen what would be the reaction of the Republicans ? Would they go “ballistic” or just give a lock step approval ?
