Discrimination is Un-Christian, Too

Much to the chagrin of women’s rights advocates, Hobby Lobby has won its legal battle — but claims of “victory” for religious freedom must be emended. Make no mistake: This is no victory for the freedom to exercise Christian principles. Though employers like Hobby Lobby are now free to deny women access to contraceptives through their employer-subsidized health plans on the basis of religious objection, they will be violating their own purported Christian principles if they do. While Christians are not compelled by their faith to engage in religious practices that impose upon the freedoms of others, they are compelled — by their belief that all persons, men and women, are created in the image of God — to oppose discrimination.

Whoa! Those are some serious mental gyrations to come to the conclusion that not offering abortifacients is discrimination. And, like most Liberals, she has completely misinterpreted both Hobby Lobby’s stance and the Supreme Court verdict. This is not about contraception, but abortifacients. Fortunately, Kathryn goes on to tell us that, yes, this is about abortifacients

Some corporations that have objected to the contraceptive requirements of the Affordable Care Act, like Hobby Lobby, claim that they do not wish to discriminate against women by denying them access to contraceptives generally, and that their opposition is merely to abortion. However, their understanding of which medications act as abortifacients rests on an outdated understanding of medical science and is at odds with the facts of the matter. Use of these contraceptive methods is not tantamount to abortion, and moreover, providing women with access to safe, reliable contraceptives for free drastically reduces the actual abortion rate.

First, Hobby Lobby and others haven’t said one word about “discrimination”. Second, what exactly is the Plan B pill other than an abortifacient? Third, she starts mixing contraceptives and abortifacients up again at the end.

The more pressing question religious corporations should ask themselves is whether denying women comprehensive health care while providing it to men, and so failing to respect women’s inherent dignity and equality, is consistent with their religious values. Since the Supreme Court focused on the practical effects at stake (that is, whether women would be able to obtain coverage elsewhere, and thus by a less restrictive means) rather than on the expressive function of the law, Hobby Lobby is now free to discriminate in its provision of health care. But the question remains, why would it want to?

Huh? Where are corporations offering services to men that they do not offer to women? In fact, women typically have much higher use benefits than men, though men pay for the same services. Men typically have no need for gynecological or maternity care. Nor mammograms. Nor others. Yet, we pay it within our premiums. Much of the opinion piece is regarding the typical Liberal trope that Someone Else should be responsible for paying for contraception/abortifacients. This is the result of several weeks of navel gazing in order to come up with a rationale to assault the SCOTUS decision, Hobby Lobby, and other organizations with religious leanings.

Team Obama Tries To Rally Governors Support For Housing Illegals

Not Obama, of course. He had more important things to do, like rest up after playing another round of golf and watching the World Cup, just chilling on a sunny Sunday. Instead of acting as POTUS, leading, engaging, he sent the head of the HHS

(Fox News) State governors from both parties have reacted cooly to efforts by the Obama administration to gain their support for placing thousands of unaccompanied Central American children with friends or family members.

Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Matthews Burwell met privately with dozens of governors Sunday at the National Governors Association summer meeting in Nashville. According to those who attended the meeting, the governors expressed particular concerns about the costs to states, including that of providing public education for the children. Burwell left the meeting through a side door without talking to reporters.

“Our citizens already feel burdened by all kinds of challenges. They don’t want to see another burden come into their state,” said Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper, a Democrat. “However we deal with the humanitarian aspects of this, we’ve got to do it in the most cost-effective way possible.”

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad were among the most vocal Republican critics. They seized on the administration’s plans to place the children with friends or family members without checking on their immigration status.

I guess this is better than what they had been doing, namely, secretly flying these illegals across the country to the Bay State with no notification to the state. It plainly shows Obama’s disengagement on the issue that he couldn’t be bothered to appear himself. But, I supposed without a pool table and some good barbecue he felt there was no chance for a photo-op. I doubt he’s realizes that he’d be about as welcome as a turd at a pool party.

Neither Burwell’s agency nor immigration officials check the immigration status of relatives who take custody of the immigrant children.

Of course, there is a pesky law which requires that the children be temporarily placed with relatives or friends with legal status.

Both Diane Feinstein and Rep. Mike Rogers are quoted in the article noting that there are measures that Obama can take without Congressional approval nor changes to the 2008 re-authorization of a human trafficking law.

At the end of the day, Obama is doing what he does best: duck the hard issues. Spread the blame. Get other people to take responsibility. And then complain, whine, and Blamestorm so he can campaign.

Warmists Want Other People To Buy Smaller Fridges And TVs

Buy a smaller fridge to save the planet

AFFLUENT families should swap their large fashionable fridges for smaller ones, while council tenants need to reduce the size of their televisions to help stop climate change, a new Government report has said.

A saving of £36 a year could be made by families switching to smaller appliances according to a study published by the Department for Energy and Climate Change.

Those who upgraded their televisions to enjoy the World Cup on a big screen will feel the force as well as the Government also urges people to downgrade their TVs to save energy.

There’s nothing wrong with saving money. £36 is $61.62 American dollars. It all adds up. But, Warmists do not really care about the money, they are using that to push their cult.

Researchers also said families should dry their clothes outside between April and October rather than using a tumble drier.

When Government starts “urging”, it soon moves to demanding, through regulation, rules, and laws. Paul Homewood notes the same story in the UK Telegraph, and writes

I’ve actually got a much better idea. Abolish the waste of taxpayers’ money used to fund this sort of worthless research, and let the researchers go out and get proper jobs. In the meantime, if I want a big telly, large fridge or fast car, I will have one, regardless of what some jumped up little researcher thinks.

One has to wonder if the researchers gave up their own fridges and TVs, and line dry their own clothes.

Known Illegal Alien Goes To The Border, Whines About Being Stuck There

This is the kind of illegal alien story that enrages me. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: illegals have created this issue themselves. Rather than being humble, attempting to become part of America, asking politely to become a citizen, learning English, appealing to the generosity of Americans, and/or not blowing up our systems, they do exactly the opposite. They demand demand demand. They insult Americans. They demand we change our laws to conform to the illegals. They whine when the existing laws catch them up. They want us to cater to them in a myriad of ways. They fly their flags above ours. They yammer on about “The Race”. Many want parts of the Southwest returned to Mexico (which is funny, because Mexico didn’t want many of these people in the first place). Anyway, here we go, as Antonio Jose Vargas brings another whinefest

Trapped on the Border

I came to Texas to document the crisis of undocumented immigrants. Now I’m stuck.

write this from the city of McAllen, which sits in the Rio Grande Valley near the border, just across from the Mexican city of Reynosa. In the last 24 hours I realize that, for an undocumented immigrant like me, getting out of a border town in Texas—by plane or by land—won’t be easy. It might, in fact, be impossible.

I flew into the valley Thursday morning to visit a shelter for unaccompanied Central American refugees and participate in a vigil in their honor. Outraged at the media coverage of this humanitarian crisis (these children are not “illegal,” as news organizations like CBS News and the New York Times call them), and frustrated by the political ping-pong centered on border security and increased enforcement, I also came here to share my own story of coming to the United States as an unaccompanied minor from the Philippines. I wanted to help change the narrative of the conversation and, with a camera crew, share stories from the shelter and its volunteers. The visit to the shelter was intense and sobering, watching small kids fight for their lives with nothing more than their spirits.

Yes, they are illegal. They have no right to be in this country. That’s another part that is enraging, illegals saying that other illegals are not “illegal”. Anyhow, what happened was that several other people wondered how he would get out of the checkpoint zone. Apparently Antonio forgot to do any research before going to agitate for America to change her laws to cater to illegals, so now he’s trapped there. Cry me a river.

I do not have a single U.S. government-issued ID. Like most of our country’s 11 million undocumented immigrants, I do not have a driver’s license—not yet, at least. (Recently, California and Washington, D.C., passed laws granting licenses to their undocumented residents. Though New York City will start issuing municipal IDs to its undocumented population, the state of New York, where I currently live, does not issue driver’s licenses.) Identification aside, since outing myself in the New York Times Magazine in June 2011, and writing a cover story for TIME a year later, I’ve been the most privileged undocumented immigrant in the country. The visibility, frankly, has protected me. While hundreds of thousands of immigrants have been detained and deported in the past three years, I produced and directed a documentary film, “Documented,” which was shown in theaters and aired on CNN less than two weeks ago. I founded a media and culture campaign, Define American, to elevate how we talk about immigration and citizenship in a changing America. And I’ve been traveling non-stop for three years, visiting more than 40 states.

Of course, I can only travel within the United States and, for identification, when I fly I use a valid passport that was issued by my native country, the Philippines. But each flight is a gamble. My passport lacks a visa. If TSA agents discover this, they can contact CBP, which, in turn, can detain me. But so far, I haven’t had any problems, either because I look the way I do (“You’re not brown and you don’t look like a Jose Antonio Vargas,” an immigration advocate once told me), or talk the way I do—or because, as a security agent at John F. Kennedy International Airport who recognized me said without a hint of irony, “You seem so American.”

He can complain all day long, the fact is he’s here illegally, as is Tania Chavez, “an undocumented youth leader from the Minority Affairs Council, one of the organizers of the vigil” for the illegal children streaming across the border. She’s soaked up lots of American tax money attending school, including higher education which garnered her two Masters, all, again, on the backs of the American and Texas taxpayers. She apparently can’t travel in more than a 45 mile radius, and if she visits Mexico, she might not be able to return.

Antonio’s movie asks that “Whatever your background or beliefs, our campaign is about asking how we define what it means to be American, and elevating how we engage as citizens.” Well, he’s not a citizen. He wants the US to conform to his illegality. He wants to change our culture. To conform to illegals. He goes on to write

A broken immigration system means broken families and broken lives. I did not realize how broken I was until I saw how broken Mama was.

But, he’s more worried about being able to come back to America than visiting his mother in the Philippines, because he might not be allowed back in.

Illegals voluntarily choose to create those “broken families and broken lives”. This is a problem of their own making.We didn’t ask them to separate from their families. They did it on their own. Actions have consequences.

They demand that legal American citizens change to accommodate the illegals. The illegals want to “shift the conversation around citizenship”. They can start by stopping the entitlement mentality and being all sorts of demandy. Post 9/11, when the security of the border and concerns over those who were overstaying their visas become a serious issue, illegals could been humble and conformed to America. They could have shown that they really wanted to be Americans, not citizen of another country who was legally entitled to be in America. Stop demanding we provide them with social services, healthcare, taxpayer money, housing, all sorts of things in their language. Instead, they did the opposite. America is a generous country. Illegals took heavy advantage of that generosity, and the resulting backlash is of their own making.

If Antonio is stuck on the border, tough. He can go back to his own country and apply for a visa. His opinion is that he has a right to be an American citizen simply because he is here.

Awesome: WMO Looks To Change Weather Baseline

Probably because weather was really bad, from a human standpoint, during that time frame, particularly the 60’s and 70’s, when the concern was global cooling

(SMH) The World Meteorological Organisation says it’s time to shift climate baselines because global warming is increasingly setting a new “normal” for weather conditions.

The widely used 1961-90 baseline should be retained as a “stable reference” for climate study but a more current data set – updated every decade – should be adopted to gauge changes in heatwave and rainstorm frequency already under way, the WMO said.

“Rising atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases are changing the Earth’s climate much faster than before,” the United Nations agency said in a statement . “As a result, decision-makers in climate-sensitive industries may be basing important decisions on information that may be out of date.”

Under the recommendations, all countries would start using the most recent 30-year period, 1981-2010, as the new baseline. This would be updated to the 1991-2020 period in 2021, and revised each decade afterwards.

This might not work out too well for them, since there has been a pause going on since 1996, roughly half of the time period. Hurricane activity, wildfires, and tornadoes, among others, have been dropping to historical lows.

Palin Doubles Down On Impeachment

Yes, she does, as she writes at Fox News

The next time you hear politicians denounce Barack Obama as a lawless, imperial president with a scandal-riddled administration, ask them what they’re going to do about it. Their gnashing of teeth over Obama’s self-granted omnipotence is repetitive.

Let’s agree with our ninth president, William Henry Harrison, who said there is nothing more corrupting, nothing more destructive than the exercise of unlimited power. We understand the problem. The only way for politicians to fix it is with a little less talk and a lot more action.

The Constitution provides the remedy for a president who commits “high crimes and misdemeanors.” It’s impeachment.

She has a point regarding nothing being done to hold Obama accountable. That said, there’s no way he would be kicked out of office, even if the GOP regains the Senate. There just aren’t enough votes, because the vast majority, if not 100%, of Democrats will not vote to get rid of him. Palin does make a much better case than last time

To be clear, “high crimes and misdemeanors” are not necessarily ordinary criminal offenses. Our Framers used the term to signify a dereliction of duty, and the first duty of the president is to enforce our laws and preserve, protect, and defend our Constitution.

Alexander Hamilton described impeachable offenses as those “which proceed from the misconduct of public men, or, in other words, from the abuse or violation of some public trust.” He explained that they are “political” offenses “as they relate chiefly to injuries done immediately to the society itself.”

Excellent points. She goes on to lay out her argument, noting specific points, something I mentioned was really missing last time. Head over to read her points. She makes a good case, and in a realistic world, Obama would already be impeached and kicked out of office. Alas, reality intrudes, as do politics.

There is a big danger, here, namely that Obama could come out of any impeachment preceding with more power and more emboldened. I’m not really worried about a President Biden. He couldn’t be worse than Obama. Also, this could damage the chances of the GOP taking the White House, much less holding the House, and the Senate if they win in 2014, come 2016. Democrats have always played the long game. Republicans need to learn to do the same, and 2016 is it.

TSA Claims Illegals Able To Fly Without Verifiable ID

You should try this, if you have some sort of court order: book a flight, and instead of showing your government issued ID (isn’t that raaaaacist?), show your court order

(Breitbart) Illegal aliens are being allowed to fly on commercial airliners without valid identification, according to the National Border Patrol Council (NBPC). “The aliens who are getting released on their own recognizance are being allowed to board and travel commercial airliners by simply showing their Notice to Appear forms,” NBPC’s Local 2455 Spokesman, Hector Garza, told Breitbart Texas.

“This is not the CBP [Customs and Border Protection] or another federal agency renting or leasing an aircraft, these are the same planes that the American public uses for domestic travel,” said Garza. “This just adds insult to injury. Not only are we releasing unknown illegal aliens onto American streets, but we are allowing them to travel commercially using paperwork that could easily be reproduced or manipulated on any home computer. The Notice to Appear form has no photo, anyone can make one and manipulate one. They do not have any security features, no watermark, nothing. They are simply printed on standard copy paper based on the information the illegal alien says is the truth.”

Spokesman Garza continued, “We do not know who these people are, we often have to solely rely on who they say they are, where they say they came from, and the history they say they have. We know nothing about most of them, ICE releases them into the American public, and now they are boarding aircraft at will with a simple paper document that anyone can easily alter or reproduce themselves.”

Both the TSA and the commercial airlines would turn you, the legal US citizen, away if you did not have a proper ID. The TSA has lots of information on identification that is acceptable for those 18 and up, which does not include a Notice To Appear. The bigger question is, what about the kids?

It gets a bit more dicey when it comes to children. There are no real TSA rules, and airlines have lots of their own rules. However, children traveling alone do require a check-in and pick-up by an adult with an acceptable form of identification. All this does beg the question, is the TSA allowing the illegal children to board and fly commercial airlines without knowing who will pick these kids up?
