In yesterdays global warming post, Rosemary brought up penguins flying. I remember seeing something about that at the beginning of April. However, it was a hoax from the BBC, and fooled quite a few people.
Personally, I found the video rather humorous, and well made. Notice who narrates it? That would be Terry Jones. You know, from Monty Python’s Flying Circus. That should have been people’s first clue. But, many, many people lost it in the comments and were blaming global warming.
Which brings me to a story I found while searching Google News for the flying penguins stories
Warming of the sea surface by as little as several tenths of a degree can pose a serious threat to King penguins. This was shown in a new report by the team of Yvon Le Maho, CNRS senior researcher at the Institut pluridisciplinaire Hubert Curien (IPHC, CNRS / University of Strasbourg 1) and a member of the French Academy of Sciences. The researchers tracked more than 450 individual King penguins over nine years in their natural environment, within the Crozet Archipelago.
Me thinks, mateys, that King penguins really need to get Darwin involved if they are that freaking sensitive to water temp changes, which occur all the time. The sea temps do not stay flat. They fluctuate, and always have.
Considering that the IPCC is predicting an average temperature increase of approximately 0,2°C per decade for the next two decades, the warming of the Southern Ocean will be a serious threat to the king penguin populations. Will the penguins survive? Will they adapt to future climate change?
They better. And they will. They must have done it in the past to have survived as a species through certainly millions of years. If they hadn’t there would be no King penguins.
