There needs to be more of this, people being arrested and charged when they break federal immigration laws
Ex-New Mexico judge, wife arrested for allegedly harboring illegal Tren de Aragua member
Former Doña Ana County Magistrate Judge Joel Cano and his wife, Nancy Cano, were taken into custody Thursday after federal agents raided their Las Cruces home.
The two face charges of evidence tampering amid allegations they harbored Cristhian Ortega-Lopez, an alleged illegal alien who is also believed to be a member of Venezuela’s notorious Tren de Aragua gang.?
The arrest follows a February incident where Ortega-Lopez was apprehended at the Cano residence. Court documents reveal that he was initially hired by Nancy Cano for home repairs and later offered accommodation in the couple’s guesthouse.
The wife of a federal judge so breezily hiring an illegal alien, but, then, this is what Democrats think illegals are for: basic manual labor.
Investigators uncovered evidence linking Ortega-Lopez to the Tren de Aragua gang, including gang-related clothing, tattoos, voicemails and text messages.
According to court documents, he unlawfully entered the U.S. on Dec. 15, 2023, by crossing the border near Eagle Pass, Texas, without inspection or authorization.
And, under the Biden-Harris regime no bothered to check the gang tattoos, they just let him in
Judge Cano resigned from his judicial position in March and on Tuesday, the New Mexico Supreme Court issued a ruling permanently barring him from holding any judicial office in the state.
“The people of New Mexico are tired of a system where the powerful don’t play by their own rules,” Amy Barela, Chairwoman of the Republican Party of New Mexico, said to the Las Cruces Sun-News. “We demand real accountability for Judge Cano’s connection to a gang-affiliated criminal and full transparency on how our judiciary is being held to the same laws as the rest of us. Enough is enough.”
But, here’s a problem
(KFOX) KFOX14/CBS4 were on the scene Thursday afternoon when the home of former Dona Ana County Magistrate Judge Joel Cano and his wife, Nancy Cano, when U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement executed a search warrant and a probable cause arrest warrant, and both were taken into custody.
A spokesperson for ICE confirmed they were both taken into custody as part of an ongoing investigation led by Homeland Security Investigations.
Cano was charged with tampering with evidence, while Nancy was charged with conspiracy to tamper.
I certainly hope more charges are coming, particularly for harboring and sheltering an illegal alien. If the feds aren’t going to charge for 8 U.S.C. § 1324, which could also include conspiracy, then why have the law? Prosecuting the ex-judge and his wife for this would set a serious precedent and put others who do the same on notice.
Here’s something interesting
(Newsweek) Jason Stevens, HSI’s special agent in charge for El Paso, said in a statement: “Initially we came back here to arrest his wife and as we started obviously conducting our interviews and started looking at evidence, we subsequently arrested Mr. Cano as well.”
That’s not good for the Democratic judge. Can’t wait till another Democratic judge decides to dismiss the whole thing

Do you think the judge didn’t understand the law?
Well he is a dummycrat.
Another dem judge who makes her own laws.

Guess laws don’t apply to dems.
Our good friend Mr Dowd is old enough to remember when Democrats hiring illegal immigrants as nannies wound up
disqualifying themforcing them to withdraw from consideration to government appointments. Of course, Mr Ortega-Lopez wasn’t hired to be a nanny, so maybe that’s different! Two Attorney General nominees, Zoë Baird Gewirtz and Kimba Wood Kramer, had hired illegals as nannies, though Mrs Kramer’s actions were at least above board, hiring the nanny when it wasn’t illegal to do so, and doing something really radical like paying Social Security taxes on the employee, something Mrs Gewirtz failed to do. Neither woman faced any real consequences, but, of course, Bill Clinton was President, so nothing would be done.
From Wednesday’s Philadelphia Inquirer:
Charges against a man were dismissed. Then a Philly police officer escorted him into ICE custody.
A judge had dismissed charges against the Dominican National when, according to his lawyer, court and sheriff staff said he was wanted by ICE officers. A Philly police officer then stepped in.

A Philadelphia police officer escorted a Dominican national out of Philadelphia’s criminal courthouse and into the custody of U.S. immigration authorities last week, shortly after a judge had dismissed all criminal charges against the defendant.
The Defender Association of Philadelphia and other advocates questioned what the apparent cooperation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) meant for Philadelphia’s so-called sanctuary city policies.
Jean Carlos Brito-Munoz, 30, was arrested on April 2 for allegedly carrying a concealed firearm without a license in the city’s Juniata section, according to police and court records. But Municipal Court Judge Bradley K. Moss dismissed the felony charge on April 17 for lack of evidence.
Lack of evidence? How, exactly, is there a “lack of evidence” against someone arrested for carrying a concealed firearm without a license? Was a firearm actually recovered and confiscated?
Wait, what? Informed that Mr Brito-Munoz was wanted on another arrest warrant, his public defender instructed her client to leave? Can an attorney advise her client to elude arrest?
The good news is that a Philly cop (apparently) helped ICE apprehend an illegal immigrant, even though the City of Brotherly Love is a ‘sanctuary city.’
