I’ve said it before: this is entirely Jimmy Carter’s fault. If he had been firm with Iran in November of 1979, and told the Ayatollah Khoumeini that either our personnel would be safely on a plane out of Iran within 72 hours, or we would mourn their passing in the attack which turned Tehran and Qom into radioactive black holes in the ground, and meant it, none of what we are seeing today in the Middle East would have happened.
I also said, “I’ve seen speculation that Iran will launch a half-hearted retaliatory strike, something Israel can easily shoot down, so that the mad mullahs can save face, but is not something which would cause Israel to strike back.” Is this what’s happening, or will there be more?

The Iran-Contra affair was both brilliant and stupid. It was stupid to trade arms for hostages, because it set a value on hostages, and simply encouraged the seizing of more hostages for ransom. It was brilliant as a way to get aid to the Nicaraguan Contras, despite the Boland Amendment.

Now Iran is (supposedly) saying that their retaliatory attack on Israel has been concluded, something which would go along with my previous comment, but who can know if the Iranians are telling the truth? Perhaps the mad mullahs think that they have somehow saved face with what initially appears to be an almost completely intercepted attack, but that’s pretty weak sauce.
